Title: The Official 'Lost' Discourse Lounge
Description: Let's here it for withdrawl symptoms!

Well, for those in the dark, this is the new series fromthe brilliant Alias creator J.J. Abrams. It's currently a phenomenon in America and is being praised everywhere as the most compelling show currently on TV. And with Domenic from Lord Of The Rings in the cast, it's looking really awesome.
Frankly, I can't wait! It looks to be easily as good as Alias if not better. Thank you J.J.! I know this will leap up to one of my favourite shows on TV almost instantly. Penny Arcade, PvP and various other online comic strips have already commented on it extensively and included it in their strips. It seems like one of those "water cooler" shows where you try to work things out and come up with theories with your mates. I LOVE THOSE KIND OF SHOWS!!!
What does everything think of all this and the show's unusually high level of advertising?
~DC - January 14, 2005 06:40 AM (GMT)
I'm really looking forward to this, especially considering the uncertainity of 24 being screened over here plus the fact it may well have run out of steam this season. As you mentioned Guru, the show has been a runaway success thus far and Channel 7 seem to be placing a heavy emphasis on the show to restore its ratings and success as far as drama shows is concerned.
Any idea when it premieres over here?
Film Guru - January 14, 2005 07:27 AM (GMT)
All I got is Febuary. So hopefully that means sometime between the 1st and the 10th. That's usually when new shows start, right?

Details are sketchy at the moment, but a bunch of people leave on a plane from Australia (WHOO!!) to another country, but their plane crashes along the way. The survivers come to only to discover they're on an island in the middle of nowhere. Initially, it's figured they just gotta call for help or send out some kind of signal, but situations arise and suddenly wierd things start happening, the rest is supposed to be a surprise.

Neat. I guess this'll be the ifrst time I've watched channel 7 in half a year. :woot:

I think Channel 7 desperately need this to be a ratings winner, as they haven't had one of those in about 6 years.

Except 24 Season 1. And yeah, I know that has to be the reason. Problem is, they actually have had the best shows on TV. Angel, 24 and Alias, but they've got no bloody idea how awesome they are, so they treat them like crap. IDIOTS!!

To be fair they did treat 24 and Alias in there first two seasons very good and advertised them lots aswell as providing encore screenings and each primetime slots. Quite simply both failed to draw huge ratings, pretty understanable considering practically every episode is required to be watched in order to keep up with each's fast-paced storyline.
It was only when they signed both on for their third seasons that they didn't seem to bother with advertising and decided it was best to keep switching their weekly timeslots.
Hopefully Lost won't suffer a similar fate.
Spag - January 18, 2005 05:32 AM (GMT)
I'm really looking foward to it and I think it will be a massive hit.
It has a Lord of the Flies feel to it, and to me, it seems some sort of creature(s) lurk on the island making it even more exciting.
fishonthecarpet - January 18, 2005 09:27 AM (GMT)
They're using the "big secret" advertising method, much akin to the most recent series of Big Brother, just letting you know it's there, but not telling you anything more... keeping people slightly interested to know what it is they do not. Clever, but annoys the shit out of me as it's so blatantly obvious.
[DZ] - January 19, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I can't wait either. :D

How is it clever? It's not clever, it's a mild form of torture.
I hate the effect it has on the average person who are almost exclusively underwhelmed by the ultimate 'surprise'. When have you ever been genuinely enthused by one of those special suprises they pull at the end of the show? Never.
It creates false hope that only leads to dissapointment, essentially tarnishing one's enjoyment of the said show.
Saying that though, Lost is really exciting me. :D
fishonthecarpet - January 20, 2005 05:29 AM (GMT)
It doesn't take a genius to come up with the idea, but I think it's clever because it gets people interested in this "secret", gaining interest in the show from many who wouldn't watch it otherwise. Kinda like Gabbo! :P

I still can't hunt down anything on Alias and 24. C'mon Channel 7, don't be a jerk to the fans.
~DC - January 25, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
I actually thought of a good reason why the may not have been advertised yet. It could be because both shows began late over in the US that Channel 7 have decided to begin each season around April to compliment the three months later the US recieved both.
Film Guru - January 25, 2005 06:54 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, sounds logical. As long as we get it in the first half of this year, Lost should keep most fans happy until Alias and 24 return. :)
Moggo - January 25, 2005 08:08 AM (GMT)
I don't hold high hopes for the re-appearance 24 if the treatment of the last series is any indication of the treatment it'll recieve this season.
:(
Still, if Lost turns out to be good, my pain may be quashed, at least momentarily. :(
Film Guru - February 3, 2005 10:46 AM (GMT)
Finally! The Pilot has aired! What are people's thoughts?
Mine? TOTALLY FLOPPIN' AWESOME!!! :woot:
That was a simply fantastic Pilot to what promises to be a very special series. It was beautifully shot, acted and written. Not to mention, no doubt what the show will thrive on, it's compelling and tension filled. What the hell were those things?! Well, it'll be awesome to find out.
It seriously made me feel like I was watching Jurassic Park the series. I am totally watching the "encore" airings, as that was just too awesome. And great to see a couple of faces from Alias in there.
10/10 for me. I'm very excited. This just might become my favourite new show. :cheese:
_MetalliX_ - February 3, 2005 10:52 AM (GMT)
When is the encore airing? I missed the premiere...
Film Guru - February 3, 2005 10:55 AM (GMT)
There's a repeat on late tomorrow night and Saturday.
Comrade Natrak - February 3, 2005 10:55 AM (GMT)
I agree with everything Film Guru said, especially the whole Jurassic Park thing, but I guess that's bound to happen when you're given a tropical environment and what could be a dinosaur. :P
It's definitely the best thing I've seen on TV for a long time, I can't wait to see the next ep! ^_^
~DC - February 3, 2005 11:08 AM (GMT)
I throughly enjoyed it although felt it still didn't live up to my lofty expectations. It was only the pilot episode though and the preview for the next looks like the story picks up a lot more, I'm particularly interested in some of the hidden motives behind a few characters.
The only problem with the show could possible be from the massive character base and how each of the 48 or so will get enough air-time to continually be involved in the storyline. Hopefully a majority will be wiped out and eventually the show settles on around five-ten to carry the show, which will allow stronger relationships to develop and allow viewers to develop stronger ties with each.
Stevorooni - February 3, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
Pretty good considering I didn't really know what to expect.
I wonder what the mysterious unseen monster is?
I'm thinking a dinosaur, but that's pretty obvious.
That dog was looking mighty suspicious...

Cubeoid - February 3, 2005 11:55 AM (GMT)
I really enjoyed the episode tonight. The first scenes around the plane were great and while it may seem like the hidden monster/monsters are dinosaurs the preview for the next show gave me the feeling of something deeper. Something a bit more unnatural. Great entertainment.

Well if you must know the first season of 24 below anything else I'd seen on television before it out of the way.

Oh yeah, it's definately not dinosaurs. Dispite some probably thinking they know what's coming, reports from America indicate we have no idea. It's not gonna be something we expect. Think massively outside the box. For all we know, they're not even in the same dimension anymore!
And yeah, the whole sequence with the plane engines still spinning was awesome, especially when the guy got sucked into one. BOOM!! :dance3:

Moggo - February 3, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
I thought it went off. Great start, and very intriguing. The only word me and my brother could use to describe the show halfway through was 'Jurassic Park'. I cant wait to see how this things evolve, and I'm really interested in getting to know some of the characters better, like the fat bloke, the pregnant lady, the dude with the orange in his mouth, and Merry.
On the other hand, some of the dialogue was cheesy and formulaic, especially the conversations between Jack and the main girl with the nice breasts. Still, I can't say I've ever really witnessed how people meet in those situations, but finding a hot babe in khaki pants wandering around alone and instantly co-ercing her to attend to a gash on my back with a piece of cotton and a knitting needle isn't something I can see taking place.
Cynicism aside, the show was great and turned out to be incredibly enthralling. I'll be back next week. :D
Woohoo for Channel 7 finally recieving some luck in the TV wars. :P
Oh, and out of interest, is Lost an ongoing series? Has it finished in the States? Will it just keep going on until they run out of ideas or feel the show has achieved everything it can, or does it have a pre-determined number of episodes?
ultracrazy1 - February 3, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
Wow that penny arcade comic was a spin out. I thought it was gonna be a dinosaur, but was hoping it'd be a robot.
Hello - February 3, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
I watched it last night, but I was watching it with a mate, and he would not shut up the entire time - Blah, blah, as if he'd get sucked in like that, blah - so, it was a bit hard to get into. Still, the entire show seemed to have class written all over it. It really did have a movie-feel about it.
The cliche characters, however, might make the series dull (wise black guy, check, fat guy who's nice and gets the hot girl, check, the hero, check, the pregnant lady, check, the old guy who goes a bit nutty, check, etc). And, although it's a great start, hopefully it doesn' become a modern day Gilligan's Island - where stupid people do dumb stuff, and screw everything up.
Also, I know the secret, as one of the channel 7 promos showed a scene from one of the later episodes, which revealed a key piece of info if you listened hard enough. But, don't worry, unlike channel 7, I won't ruin it for anybody :P
Stevorooni - February 3, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
The show is like a realistic version of Gilligans Island.
I just hope it doesn't get all stupid and they meet the Harlem Globetrotters on the island.
kami - February 4, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
I was watching it last night and it was pretty cool. The part I possibly found to be the funniest was when the lifeguard went off to look for pens.
As for that monster, is it me or did it sound more like a machine rather than a monster of some sort?
And another thought that just popped into my mind was the possiblity that it wasn't an island, but actually a peninsula ala the simpsons :)
Stevorooni - February 4, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
Are there actually any uncharted islands anymore? You'd figure we would have found them all by now.

Seeing as though they recently found a "lost city" in Malaysia, dating back thousands of years, I'd think there's a possibility that there's some island, somewhere, which nobody knows about. Still, it's a bit easier to find an island, than some city covered by thick jungle in the middle of nowhere, I suppose...
...BUT, WHO KNOWS WHAT CRAZY STUFF IS GOING ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE? Giraffes with ape heads and pigs with human bodies, and shit like that.

There probably wouldn't be any more uncharted islands, unless there really is a dinotopia.
Though, not every island is inhabited; and as the pilot said, any search party looking for them is likely to be looking in the wrong area since nobody knows that the plane went off course due to the turbulence.
