Title: Battlefield 2
Description: 1.4 Released! 2142 Testing Continues...

f15active - December 25, 2004 09:24 AM (GMT)
I thought it was about time to make a Battlefield 2 thread.

Battlefield 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Battlefield:1942. Battlefield:Vietnam was kind of a Battlefield 1.5 as many fans describe it.

Battlefield 2 is set in modern times. It features three sides. The United States, China, and the fictional Middle East Coalition (MEC) which is a group of allied Arab States.

Battlefield 2’s levels are set in both Middle Eastern Locales, and Manchuria in Northern China. They will be scaleable to 3 different sizes depending on the number of players in the server. Gone are the days of unbalanced player to vehicle ratios.

The battlefield 2 engine will feature impressive graphics and physics comparable to other new games on the PC.

Battlefield 2 will also include an impressive squad based system. A group of seven players can form into a squad which encourages team work. The game will support voice over IP so the squad can talk to each other. Each squad will have a squad leader who reports directly to the commander. This is where things get interesting. The commander is chosen at the start of the battle from the highest ranked players on the team. He can give orders to the squad leaders on the team. The commander has view of the battlefield similar to that of rts games.

The commander has a few abilites.
The satellite scan reveals enemy forces over an area for a few seconds. Only the commander can see them, so it’s his job to relay this information to his squad leaders on the ground. He also has a similar ability called the spy drone. This will display enemy positions both on the commanders, but all his teammates minimaps.
The commander can also drop supplies at a location to aid his troops. This is important because in bf2, there will be no more static ammo boxes.
The commanders final ability is the artillery strike. It is highly effective against large numbers of troops and is potentially dangerous to friendly units.

Battlefield 2 is scheduled to come out March 2005.

I loved Battlefield 1942, but was quite dissapointed with BF: Vietnam.

I'll keep an eye on it, but am rather skeptical about this one.

BrotherEstapol - December 25, 2004 02:06 PM (GMT)
Vietnam wasn't made by the same studio though, while this is being made by European DICE studio(who made 1942), and the Desert Combat mod people. :)

f15active - December 26, 2004 02:47 AM (GMT)
Yes DICE bought out Trauma Studios who are the people who made Desert Combat. I can't remember what they are developing for this game though.

f15active - February 4, 2005 05:01 AM (GMT)
Finally a decent video of action.

Battlefield 2 has gone gold.

A new video has recently appeared, personally its my favourite one so far.

Chinese troops attack an US outpost, its a great ingame movie trust me, 95mb.

BrotherEstapol - June 2, 2005 08:20 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm really hyped for this game, and I should have a new video card to play it on by the time it comes out. :D

f15active - June 2, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
I got the video card covered, but will I have the rest of the computer?!?!

Demo should be out in a week or 2.

Texta - June 2, 2005 10:20 AM (GMT)
Good thing I got that extra stick of ram. I'm excited! Can't wait for it to come out. Thorpie says it's going to be fully sick.

DJ-Civic - June 2, 2005 01:50 PM (GMT)
Estapol pointed me towars this and I'm glad he did. I'm liking all these squad based FPS games on PC, and this looks so damn cool! So can someone explain how it's played? Like what type of soldier you can be in the game? Can you pilot the choppers? F18s?

Oh and what specs are we looking at to run this? I hope my rig is good enough for a smooth experience like HL2/CS:S.

BrotherEstapol - June 2, 2005 02:47 PM (GMT)
I'd say your rig would run it fine. ;)

I suggest you read up some reviews of 1942, that mya give you the jist of the basic Battlefield gameplay:

Then of course there's some Battlefield 2 Previews, which should give you an idea of some of the improvments they're putting into the game:

f15active - June 2, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
That trailer you saw would have been all humans playing, and all vehciles are pilotable, - the aircraft carrier.

f15active - June 8, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
The demo for Battlefield 2 should be coming out on Saturday or thereabouts.
-------------------------
Although final dates for the Battlefield 2 demo have not been locked down we understand we will be allowed to make it available in little over a week. Once again these features are NOT 100% final but the demo will contain:

One map
16-player single player
16 and 32-player multiplayer
Time limit per round

EA Play Australia

thebigm - June 8, 2005 10:50 AM (GMT)
Definately will be getting the demo and most likely will be getting the game later this year, after my HSC though :(

DJ-Civic - June 8, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
So will it be better to get the demo from the EA site or through Xfire, which seems will download automatically.

BrotherEstapol - June 8, 2005 02:03 PM (GMT)
Xfire I'd say.

BTW, I've been hearing that the date is more closer to Thursday or Friday night. ;) (apparently EA release their Demos on Fridays)

f15active - June 8, 2005 10:15 PM (GMT)
But this would be in America, and because I've been hearing alot of Americans say its out Friday the 10th, and Ea Play Australia say 11th on the Saturday, I think its probably true and we will see a release on Saturday.

evO - June 8, 2005 11:18 PM (GMT)
Doesn't bother me either way, i'm still getting it ^_^.

Manny M - June 8, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
I haven't really had the time to really keep an eye on this, so I don't know what they've done to go back to the awesome gameplay that was the original, and alleviate the problems they introduced with vietnam. I'm still a little unsure about it all, but in saying that, i'll be buying it, and it'll be a blast playing with you guys.

***EDIT***

I watched that 80 meg vid, and now i'm excited.

f15active - June 9, 2005 06:17 AM (GMT)
Can't wait either, it was that video in particular that got me excited. We should just join a game together, form a squad, and go on a rampage :D

Manny M - June 9, 2005 06:50 AM (GMT)
Let's do it!

I'm always a little headstrong when it comes to these games, so don't be suprised to see me perform the role of cannon fodder.

f15active - June 9, 2005 07:41 AM (GMT)
No worries mate, in fact, its perfect! You'll feel right at home with Bf2, as you can see...

Yeah, I'm REALLY hyped for this, and I'm kinda hopeing that the demo doesn't actually come out within the next few days, as I'm buying GTA:SA on the PC tommorow, and I know I just won't play it if the BF2 demo is there. :(

Though on the plus side, my 6800 GT should be here tommorow as well. :D

Manny M - June 9, 2005 10:49 AM (GMT)
Welcome to great looking gaming.

For like 6 months!

Sometimes I just wish technology would put on the brakes for a while.. :(

evO - June 9, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
What are you guys complaining about? I'm sitting here with a GF FX5200, and a computer that should be almost decent but runs like shit anyway.

I know how you feel, but when your spending $550 on a video card, you want it to last for more than a year...

DJ-Civic - June 9, 2005 01:16 PM (GMT)
I think updating video cards should be done when you really can't play anything above 20fps on low res. That's me of course. ;)

Looks like I'm in line with your statement Civ. ;)

DJ-Civic - June 9, 2005 01:23 PM (GMT)
You can't play FC on low? Shite, you do need to update then. :P

It will, don't worry too much.

And *ahem*, I spent twice as much on mine, how do you think I feel :P

BrotherEstapol - June 9, 2005 02:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah I know, but I don't have disposable income! :P

BTW, news on the Demo:

QUOTE
Q: What about the demo? When is the demo coming out? I want to play!

A: We understand that it will be released this Friday, June 10th. The precise time is unknown, but it will probably be around 12 noon Pacific Time. As with previous Battlefield demos, it will contain one map. No, we don't know which map it will be.

f15active - June 9, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
Most people are saying Gulf Of Oman.

BrotherEstapol - June 10, 2005 12:04 AM (GMT)
...is the map that will be on the Demo?

f15active - June 10, 2005 05:31 AM (GMT)
Yep I was right, its offical now.

Heres the different versions of this particular map.

32 Player

Here are all the other maps, the site is german but just click on the images and you will see each map in the game.
http://www.battlefield2.net/content/bf2/maps/

64 player does not feature in the demo. However, if you want to play those maps, I'd recommend at least a gig of ram. Those 32 player maps are simply massive, the 64 player versions will easily be the biggest gaming environments ive ever seen.

ElPresidente - June 10, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
Can't wait!!!

f15active - June 10, 2005 10:58 AM (GMT)
Well for those of you who are ready and waiting, keep your eyes on this space.

http://www.gamespot.com/promos/bf2demo.html

You probably wont be able to get it from anywhere else. I think you'll find that it will be out when you wake up tommorow morning. I'm going to Melbourne for the weekend tommorow, so have fun. See you on the battlefield.

evO - June 10, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
It's been released! Download.com Also have it.

Has anyone already got it? Mine is downloading at 7kbs and i'd really like to be able to play it sometime this century.

_MetalliX_ - June 11, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)
Wow!

This game is so great, and I get next to no lag! If its this great with only 16 players, I can't wait for the full version! Even better is everyone is so polite at the moment, it really does feel like a cooperative battalion!

At least thats what I would be saying if I could get a spot in the download queue... :(
