Ooh, could this be the movie Independance Day was supposed to be?

At least we know Cruise won't be throwing down the wise cracks.

The teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds has landed!  You can check it out by selecting your desired format and clicking the links below.

Spielberg is currently directing the contemporary adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic 1898 novel for Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins, Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin.  While the script is being closely guarded, we know that the story tracks a family during a Martian invasion of Earth. Cruise and Otto are the parents. Fanning and Chatwin play the children. Robbins will play a concerned astronomer.

The production is rumored to be the costliest in the history of cinema. Spielberg reportedly wants to make War of the Worlds the "film of the decade."

War has filmed in New Jersey, Brooklyn, New York and will soon lens in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

War of the Worlds opens June 29, 2005.

Interesting, this could turn out pretty cool. :)

Sounds very promising, I'm especially keen considering Spielberg is at the helm.

After reading the book 3 times, I cannot wait for the two (yes, 2!) War of the Worlds movies!! I wanna see how the tripods look like. :P

Apparently. there's gonna be a Dreamworks version, and a Pendragon one. But I just don't see Tom as the lead. :| But Dakota is starring, she's great.
The Speilberg movie is set in America by the looks, and that completly sucks ass. The Pendragon version is set in the 1900 England country side/London, and from this report it seems to be the faithful one. ;)

Check it @ IMDB

Check it @ CD

Check THIS too! :woot:

GET EXCITED!! :dance3:

Well the Speilberg version is out, and I'm going to see it tonight.(with high expectations I might add! :P )

I'll give you my impressions whenI get back. :)

~DC - July 5, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm seeing it tomorrow morning too. I haven't been hearing overwhelmingly positive reviews so I'm keen to see how Spielberg has translated the material to the big screen.

BrotherEstapol - July 5, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
Well I've come off not knowing if I like it or not. :/

Although I knew what the ending was(same as the book), it was a bit of an anti-climax. :(

*SPOILER*
I thought that the son should have died...twas a bit sappy having him there at the end as was having the wife's side of the family all there.(unscaved in a untouched house I might add)
Would have been more realistic and harsh if the son had actually died. (on screen!! :evilwink: )

That said, it was a pretty freaky movie(the blood sucking!!! :argh: )

*SPOILER*

I mostly agree with the spoiler their Estapol..except for the "on screen" part. It was good how it was. Other than that I felt it was a pretty good movie. I feel the second half could have been a bit better but that said it was still good. The action near the start of the movie was awesome.

~DC - July 6, 2005 10:13 AM (GMT)
Saw it today and throughly enjoyed it. I loved the way it essentially turned from a sci-fi disaster flick in the first half to an intense drama for the remainder. I felt Spielberg used the material really well and it showed in the way he translated it to screen. The special effects never felt excessive and definitely favoured the "quality over quantity" philosophy.

Crusie was good because he basically played his real-life persona for the majority, i.e. an arrogrant twit, but showed some genuine empathy and care for his children as the film progressed. Dakota Fanning was simply incredible in playing his daughter, adding fantastic depth into her character, instead of portraying the normally tedious young child who's primary function is to scream at approriate moments in such cases.

The major faults I had with it was SPOILERSthe rather abrupt and anti-climatic ending, although it seems to have remained faithful to the original. While some have complained of the way the aliens suddenly went from complete dominance to being destroyed, I actually liked the way the story was told from an normal person's perspective for a change.END It could have done with an extra ten or so minutes but other than that I loved it.

I just felt a few things in the second half of the movie made no sense. Things like (spoilers) why the character Tim Robbins played signaled the two main characters to come over yet no once else came, the way the cage fell and landed on a bunch of branches yet no one sustained any injuries and Robbies lame arse excuse for going and seemingly killing himself. In paticular I think the ending would have had more impact if Robbie had just stayed dead. It felt a little sappy.

I still thought it was a good movie despite these things.

I agree in that it felt like Spielberg rushed the last quarter of the film to tie it up within two hours too, however felt this was a minor gripe on an otherwise fanatastic movie. Robbie going to face the aliens with the army was symbolic of his general perception of justice. He wanted to get back at the aliens for the death and destruction they caused before his very eyes and he was young and brash, hence thinks he could also be benefical to the army facing them rather than a general annoyance. Robbie attempting to help the people clinging to the ferry also demonstrated his passion to help others, no matter what the situation, evident given the way he was punched and kicked by strangers who wanted their car mere hours beforehand.

I think it was pretty predictable that Robbie would somehow survive in the long run, but it still wasn't implausible, given the ordeal that father/daughter experienced. We didn't see all the people from the cages after they fell with the alien either, so you can't rule out possible deaths, although I'd admit it was kinda rushed and cheap that they immediately got back on their feet unharmed.

I saw the movie a couple of days ago, and enjoyed it. Tom Cruise was a bit of a dick, and the Tim Robbins character was a little annoying, but altogether an extremly enjoyable movie.

I thought she was bloody annoying :D Damn kid actors.

I saw this yesterday arvo, and it was ok. It felt completely epic, and the effects were awesome. However, there really wasn't much to it. The world gets attacked by aliens. YAWN. Still, it was cool that the lead wasn't a hero, or nothing, and it did feel far more realistic than most disaster flicks. Tom Cruise made the film, and he really made me wish that he wasn't such a fucktard in real life.

SPOILERS

If this attack was 100 million years in the making, then the aliens are fucking dumb. Why wouldn't they just build a massive gun, that'd take 'em 100 million years to build, and then just blow up earth? Stupid aliens.

SPOILERS END

It said at the start that they were envious of our planet, not that they wanted to completley destroy it.

~DC - July 17, 2005 12:47 PM (GMT)
I saw it again on Saturday, thanks to a whinging little brother, and understandably the whole suspense factor had been completely been taken out. I still enjoyed it, but perhaps overrated it on my inital viewing.

Nevertheless Spielberg still knows how to direct a good flick, I thought he may have lost the nack after the horrible Terminal, and it was definitely the best alien invasion flick I've ever seen.

I meant a big gun that vaporises all humans, or some shit. Anyways, my point is that if they had millions of years to plan, I'm sure that they could've come up with a better plan. Better yet, why wait until the population is at its most significant to attack? Why not just kill Adam and Eve on day one and be done with it?

Oh, how true. He is such a complete wang in real life that it beggers belief how he landed that angel in the form of Katie Holmes and continues to make entertaining movies and provide likeable performances. Scientology? This man is mental, but he's certainly an excellent actor.

Managed to catch this yesterday, and while it was good, it was hardly great. Great suspense, acting and special effects, but it was very unbelivable in parts (tom cruise being the luckiest MF alive surviving 4 seperate encounters), and the ending was such a copout.

Best thing about it was the King Kong trailer, which ROCKED!

ElPresidente - August 1, 2005 01:52 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't even call it good. When you find yourself checking your watch 1/4 of the way into the film it is generally a bad sign. :P

Hello - August 1, 2005 04:34 AM (GMT)
I was mostly checking on Tom Cruise's fine arse, rather than my watch.
