Title: XP SP2
Description: Service Pack 2
Texta - September 29, 2004 12:21 PM (GMT)
Hey team, I just intalled the XP SP2 today (I got a mag with it because there was no way I was downloading it!). Anyway all seems to be working fine. In fact better than fine because now I can use the bluetooth mouse that's been kicking around for months (tried to download drivers but it said I needed SP2 like months before it was released  ).
Anyway, installation was a breeze and I haven't had any problems... yet.
Has anyone else stepped up? and had any problems?
(note: as this is not pc game related but much more general, I've stuck it in off topic. If anyone feels that it's horribly inappropriate for this thread to be here I will move it)

Yes, SP2 is a very good update, especially if you use Internet Explorer. ;)
Though yes, it's a hefty 200mb file sadly, but if you have broadband, and use Windows XP it is an essentail download.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspxBTW, I really think this should be put in the PC forum, but we'll see what the others say. ;)

Only problem I'm having is every few times I boot up it promps me to use windows firewall. I keep clicking "use my own firewall" or something to that measure, but it will warn me every few days that I don't have a firewall enabled

I can't stand Windows service packs.
After getting used to and modifying their current OS to your liking, they completely bring in unnecessary crap just to make your life hell. I DON'T WANT TO USE YOUR SHITTY FIREWALL, SO STOP ASKING ME ABOUT IT!
I've had no real problems other than utter annoyance, but it completely screwed up the laptops at work. Made them run like they were 486's.
BTW, I also think this should be moved to the PC forum, after all, it is PC related.
All in agreement, say "I".
I
Righty-o.

Ive been running SP2 for about a month and a bit now. had no problems other then a few setting changes that I didn't like but thats easily fixed.
For your firewall problem make go to your security center and go to change the way security center alerts me and make sure that the alermt me about my firewall settings is turned off and that your LAN and internet connections do not have windows firewall enabled.
Manny M - September 29, 2004 11:54 PM (GMT)
I was looking for options, but couldn't manage to find any to tell it to shut the hell up.
Cheers, i'll try that tonight.
BrotherEstapol - September 30, 2004 01:03 AM (GMT)
Manny, just go into to control panel, then "Windows Firewall" then just turn it off. :P
thebigm - September 30, 2004 01:18 AM (GMT)
I have been running the SP2 ever since it officially came out, and I hate it, as I have to disable my antivirus for program installations, games aren't working, programs aren't working, and I had Visual Basic constantly crash on me when I had an assignment for SDD due the next day, so in short I hate it!
But I won't be unistalling, since it is a shared computer, and my brother wants it on.

You twit, the firewall is off, but it constantly pops up to remind me that it's off and i'm leaving my computer to be vulnerable to attacks.

In this case what you need to do is open your Security Center and check the "piss off I have my own firewall and I don't need some stupid systray pop-up telling me if it's working or not" option (that may not be the exact wording :whistling:). It should leave you alone regarding firewalls now. Alternatively, get a 3rd party firewall that is compatible with SP2 so that it actually detects it. I use Kerio Personal Firewall 4, which does this.

What exactly is this service pack good for? What does it do that's good for your computer? Besides security.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/features.mspxMost of the features are security, so yeah, not much....unless of course you haven't installed SP1(which had a heap of general XP fixes) cause that comes with it.
Pauly - October 2, 2004 07:50 AM (GMT)
Okay it's still asking me to enable windows firewall.
sp2 sucks.
BrotherEstapol - October 2, 2004 10:25 AM (GMT)
Ok, so you've gone to Control Panel/Security Center and under "Firewall" you've clicked "Recommendations" and then ticked "I have a Firewall solution that I'll monitor myself."?
If you have, then I don't know what's going on. :P
Pauly - October 2, 2004 11:18 AM (GMT)
Yes I have done that, aswell as clicking on "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and deselecting "Firewall" as recommended above.
BrotherEstapol - October 2, 2004 12:17 PM (GMT)
Well that's very strange.
I disabled it as soon as I installed it (3 months ago) and it hasn't asked be about firewalls since.

This is going to be vague, as i'm going off the top of my head here, but when it pops up in your taskbar stating that everything is off, and that you are vulnerable etc, click on the message, which will open up the screen showing what is enabled.
From there, look at the lower left hand side of the opened window, and it should have something like "settings" or "alert frequency". Click that and you should be able to select the option to stop alerting you when the security crap is disabled.
I'll try to give a real rundown when I get home :P

Like I said above, I've already done that, but it only last for a few days, then it alerts me again
BrotherEstapol - October 6, 2004 04:11 AM (GMT)
So is it actually resetting your settings so that it still alerts you? Or is it still set to disabled?(or whatever it's called)
Pauly - October 6, 2004 04:17 AM (GMT)
It's resetting so that it still alerts and the Firewall setting goes back to disabled/off (instead of "not monitored"/I have my own solution).
BrotherEstapol - October 6, 2004 04:50 AM (GMT)
Ok, that's really strange. :S
Does that Security Center thingo open when you launch Windows?
If so, see if there's a setting to make it so that it doesn't launch when Windows does.
DJ-Civic - October 6, 2004 02:53 PM (GMT)
Windows downloaded SP2 for me last night, and while I think my PC is running smoother, the installation took about 1GB out of my HDD! I thought it was meant to be 200MB. Now I have 500mb left on my hdd.
TrinityJayOne - October 7, 2004 02:04 AM (GMT)
Try cleaning out your temp directory?

The window doesn't open I just get a stupid little icon and warning in my taskbar that I can't get rid of until I open Security Center and tell it to fuck off.

If its really bothering you that much here is a drastic measure. You will need admin access and admin tools installed...
Go to your admin tool then select services.
Find the security center service and right click on it and select properties.
Then select your start up type as manual or disabled.
