Title: Initial-D
Description: For all your drifting needs.
Shadow Link - April 27, 2004 01:04 PM (GMT)
My latest addiction has been an expensive one: The Initial-D units at Galactic Circus not only stole $20 of my hard earned dollars in a single session, but it captured my soul in the process. All I can talk and think about now is Initial-D. It's (in my opinion) the best racing title at the arcades today.
This thread is home to Initial-D discussion, if you haven't realised. So post your card(s)' specs and join in on the Sega induced fun fun!~
Name: Slink
Car: RX-7 Spirit R
Parts Course: A
Areas cleared: Myogi
Feel free to spark up the conversation, arrange Initial-D meets, etc.
To kickstart the conversation, how bullshit are the Integra Type-R and the MR2-S?! I mean, ffs, you hit walls with the Integra and you don't slow down, it doesn't slide and it grips the road like a flattened possum. The MR2-S starts off pretty much unstoppable!! Argh!
NismoR34 - April 27, 2004 02:28 PM (GMT)
Ah Initial D.
It seriously rocks hard, and is easily the best racing game I've played in the arcades.
Due to my stupidity, I didn't know how to get a card, so I just kept racing without a card. I do know, but haven't had the chance to play the game for a while.
I don't know what car I'll choose, but it'll probably be either an Rx7, or a Skyline. (No suprises there..)
The game rocks hard though, and when I first played it, I was amazed at how good I actually was at it. [/cocky]
What annoys me about the game though, is it's always hogged by people. They know you're waiting for a turn, yet they continually play it. So everytime that happens, I ask them if I can verse them, and I beat them everytime. (so far) Damn that feels good. ;)
Comrade Natrak - April 28, 2004 03:32 AM (GMT)
I haven't played Initial-D before but with Damo and Neo Seph's constant ranting on how good the game is I plan on giving it a go soon. I'll probably go the next 'Initial-D' meet.
Shadow Link - April 28, 2004 10:39 AM (GMT)
Damn right you're coming, Natrak. I'm gonna buy a Version 3.0 card soon, too. Probably the Skyline 25GT. It's a Skyline, but it ain't 4WD. Drift-o-rama! ;)
Nismo, where are you located, man? If you're in Melb, you should consider coming, too.

I am a huge fan of the Anime, but have never played the game... I want to play this soooo bad! :(

I too am gonna get a Version 3 card, but I won't be "upgrading" my version 2 one because I don't wanna lose it. I'll probably get an RX-8 or the same Skyline as Slink. I need a car that drifts!

Oh no you won't! If such an occasion arises (which I'm sure it won't  ) I'll probably buy the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO III. The misfiring system is sexy.

Damn. That would've been interesting. What version(s) have you got up there, Nis? Got your grubby mitts on 3 yet?

Do you call the car the "AE86" or the
"hachi-roku". ;)
Man, I love this game. Unfortunately there aren't that many units of the game around me. Only on the Gold Coast. :( And that's the main reason I don't have a card for it yet.
TrinityJayOne - April 28, 2004 02:55 PM (GMT)
It's funny that you mention it actually, as it varies. To most people I say Sprinter or AE86, but in Box Hill (Asian community where I first played the game) I always refer to it as hachi-roku, mainly because it's the only place where people know what that means. :P

The GTR's are the only AWD Skylines... they are also the only acceptionally quick ones.
As far as drifting an AWD goes, it is entirely possible, if not a tad harder, but atthe end of the day it is just as good, if not better than FR Drift (once you master it of course). You also get the best of both worlds, Drift and Grip racing.
Although I am speaking in terms of reality, I haven't actually played the game (although if it's anything like the anime I am correct... Well I should be :P ).

Lordage man, you're right, once you get the "feel" of the GTR in the game, you can take corners by drifting quite easily, it's actually awesome fun in an GTR on Initial D. I'm so glad I can waste people to pieces here in Canberra, it makes me feel special. ;) If only I could verse Slink and co. :( |
I know for sure that we have 2 here in Canberra, it's located in Belconnen. (my side of this city)
I believe 3 is in the middle of the city (Civic) and also in Woden. (more other side of Canberra.) I'm not sure about over in Tuggernerong or however you spell it, ask Estapol about that. ;)
heatz0r - April 30, 2004 06:49 AM (GMT)
This has to be one of my most favourite arcade racers. I recently got a card for it but stupid me picked manual which I suck at and don't wanna spend $$ on practicing, so next time I'll go with an Auto RX-7 :D
On a side note, don't you just hate it when you're versing a friend and then when your friend gets up and you start your free game some dude decides to race you without letting you finish your race, and you end up loosing cause his card has like 100$ on it............

You in Brisbane if yes there's one in the city and one in Chremside both at replay.
Shadow Link - April 30, 2004 01:34 PM (GMT)
I just finished watching Initial-D: Second stage, and inspired by the kick arse LanEvo III's misfiring system, I've decided my v.3 car has been determined. The only thing is I don't know much about driving 4WD's in iD: Any tips, guys?
heatz0r - April 30, 2004 03:01 PM (GMT)
All I know is that 4wd cars have a major advantage on snow tracks or wet tracks they will easily outclass any other car in those conditions.
TrinityJayOne - May 1, 2004 08:02 AM (GMT)
He's right- expect superior starts off the line and improved acceleration out of turns.

So basically their inability to drift like crazy is made up for with their kick-arse acceleration getting out of turns?
heatz0r - May 2, 2004 11:10 AM (GMT)
I haven't played it yet but I'm pretty sure you would be able to drift using the brake technique, it might not be as good as the other cars since the 4wd are meant to have increased traction.
You could have a read of the FAQ at gamefaqs and read up on the in's and out's of the game.
Lordage - May 2, 2004 12:11 PM (GMT)
Hmm, if you all like the game so much you should look into getting the Anime, it will give you a far better idea what's happening in the game.
I got the box set off EB for $90 around 6months ago. It comes with 1st, 2nd abd 3rd stages, as well as Battle and Extra Stages. :)

DJ-Civic - May 2, 2004 12:55 PM (GMT)
I played the game today after months in between goes, so i decided to grab me a card, which is pretty nifty. :D
I'm still pretty shitty on the game as I keep loosing and taking turns badly. :( Can you ID experts give me any pointers? I've seen guys do awesome starts and take corners perfectly. Is there some sort of trick? HELP! ;)

Why do you always seem to have problems with taking corners, it's the same for Gt3...
It depends on so many different aspects, on how to take corners in this game. (Ok, so maybe not heaps of aspects, but enough...)
I'm not going to write a guide for you or whatever, because I can't exactly see how you take the corners, and therefore, can't write accordingly, so I'll just list a few things.
It's depends on:
Approach to the corner/s,
Acceleration control throughout corner,
Car positioning before, throughout, and after the corner.
I could list some more, but I think they'll do for now. Because I haven't played it for a while, I think maybe Trin or someone else should answer the question...
Speaking of Initial D, because of this thread, and because of the small discussion with Slink, I've been wanting to go and play it again, so hopefully sometime this week, I'll get the oppurtunity. :)
Shadow Link - May 3, 2004 12:56 AM (GMT)
Good car of choice, Civ. I've got an RX-7, too. Different model, though. I opted for the Spirit R (and an Integra Type R I got for free, but let's not get into discussion about that cheap-arse car). Personally I find the RX-7's handling beautiful, it's responsive yet heavy feel really makes for some awesome drifts. As for the techniques I use? They're fairly basic: Wide hairpins usually result in the dropping of a gear and a sharp-yet-controlled steering movement. For sharp hairpins I'll drop a gear, let go of the accelerator, take the turn then accelerate towards the middle of it. For Über-Sharp turns I'll do the same method as previously written, but I'll add a bit of a brake-tap or two.
TrinityJayOne - May 3, 2004 01:45 AM (GMT)
That's my boy! :D Exactly what I woulda said. A will add a few things about driving position though.
-Try to have only ONE hand on the wheel. If you have two you can't turn as quick because one arm gets in the way of the other. Plus it frees up the other hand for gear changes.
-NEVER let go of the wheel mid race, as you shouldn't need to change your grip on the wheel. Makes it easier to take the same corner the same way over and over again if you know the exact point to turn to.
-Ignore your driving lessons: one foot for accelerator, the other for braking! :P It's a race after all, not dropping the kids off to school, and moving one foot from pedal to pedal takes time.
-If you find that the force feedback from the wheel is too hard (or too soft), you can change it in the options. When you insert your card and see the screen with your car stats, press the view change button a few times until you see some options. Note this won't affect the cars in-game handling, only the force feedback.
As for drifting, you shouldn't need to "try" to drift in Initial D. If your car can drift, it'll drift, whether you want it to or not. :P All you really hafta do is turn a corner at speed and you should get sideways.
heatz0r - May 3, 2004 02:48 AM (GMT)
The idea of keeping 1 hand on the wheel is a good one because it also allows you to figure out where the wheels of the car will be centred. After making a turn you probably have turned the stearing wheel around a fair bit and coming out of the turn will be a mess unless you know where to turn the wheel back to the center point. Keeping the same grip will help you out with this. I usually have my right hand at the top of the stearing wheel at the 1 o'clock postion and turn it half way round on the turns.
Shadow Link - May 3, 2004 07:40 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Trin told me to use one hand right from the start. It quickly became a habit. He also said to tell my driving instructor to get fucked if I was instructed to keep my foot off the brake.

First of all I'm a huge fan of id, loved the anime. And Stage 4 is getting released now. :D
For starting, you need to know when to gear up, each car is different. For turning/corners, some people like to use brake but I dont. Just letting go of the accelerator when neccessary.

I'd refuse to race an Integra Type R. Friggin' cheaters! Get a real car! You take the fun out of the game!
Oh, and the reason you don't need to brake is because the Integra is teh cheat car and grips like crazy. Not to mention it doesn't slow down when you hit walls.
finalazy - May 3, 2004 08:26 AM (GMT)
Well just about everyone here in Syd uses them.
It's not just because I have an integra I don't brake, thats how I play.
It's your choice what car you use.

Just about everyone in melb uses 'em, too. Top 4 for just about every track is a DC2. I find 'em lame, personally. I was going to use the one my mate gave me for free, but saw one in action and realised it really isn't the most fun of cars to use. It leaves too much room for screw-ups, and not nearly enough for improvement.
Each to his own, though.
hij4ck3r - May 3, 2004 09:21 AM (GMT)
I use the RX-7 infinity personally.
A little tip for taking those harder corners, i tend to down shift right before 'cause this results in a loss of traction and gets your around quicker. You can downshift if playing in auto as well for those of you that do.

And the first time I played the game I must've looked so unco! I used both hands when turning so my car kept slamming into walls as I couldn't turn the wheel all the way. Now I use one hand to "whip" the thing around.

I want a LanEvo III, dammit!

Mate, you could probably not slow down at all and still take the corner. Just because everyone uses the car doesn't make it good. They use it because they know it can beat every other car, thus they get lots of free games. Personally I'd rather drive with skill and be beaten by someone with even more skill than win in a car that requires no skill. >:|

The Integra Type R is cheap. End of discussion. If it didn't a turbo upgrade, then It would been semi-fair.
Say, did they "fix" The Integra in V.3?
