If you read the initial post it requested individual games only. So maybe try and pick the best of the Street Fighter series.
If your top 5 games are all Street fighter then that's okay. But you need to name individual games ....otherwise its more like a top 20 games list (how many SF games have been made anyway? )

BrotherEstapol - July 16, 2004 10:22 AM (GMT)
Streetfighter 2 and Soul Calibur 2 get my vote.
I would have also voted for SSB:M but it doesn't count. <_<
Slink; what console was the original SF on? Or was it only in the arcades?
craptest - July 16, 2004 11:14 AM (GMT)
BrotherEstapol - you can't find '5' fighting games to make a full list? Geewiz <_<
Well. Here's mine.....
1. Soul Calibur (NAMCO: DC) - The greatest 3D fighter ever made and reason alone to own a dreamcast. Better than SC2? U betcha. And that's not DC love making me blind.
2. Garou: Mark of The Wolves (SNK: Neo-Geo/ DC) - the final SNK (now
Playmore) developed fighter to reach the Neo-Geo (as far as I know). Awesome. Most would have a SF game as the highest 2D fighter. Not me. GMotW just feel better to me. And if we're playing 2D I'd rather be playing this.
3. Dead or Alive 2 (TECMO: ARC/DC/PS2) - Bouncy boobs do not a good game make ...but it doesn't hurt either. Fun to kick a friend thru a window. DOA3 looks better (way better) but seems clunkier than DOA2 due to a slight button lag time (well that's what I felt the other day when I played DOA3 again). A simple mans VF. Call me simple.
4. Moero! Justice Gakuen (Project Justice) (Capcom: ARC/DC) - Only just bought this the other day. Lets get one thing straight. I hate highschool kids anime crap. But dammit. Capcom have made one of teh most enjoyable 3D (2.5 D) fighters eva!! Technically flawed and iffy controls. But loveable. If you own a DC you MUST own thsi game. Teh special attacks and team up attacks are awesome. Love it!!!!!!! In 6 months this could move up the list.
5. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike (Capcom: ARC/DC?PS2 soon) - thought I'd better have at least one Street Fighter game or else I'd be attacked. Now I'm no SF expert, but what time Ive spent with 3rd Strike has made me believe its probably 'as good as SF gets'. Beautiful animation, back to basics SF fighting. Technically excellent.
Honourable mentions: VF4 Evo (really haven't played enough), Tekken 3, Last Blade 2, VF3tb

SoulCalibur=Still beautiful
There's no justice!!
TrinityJayOne - July 16, 2004 12:09 PM (GMT)
1 Soul Calibur II
I really haven't played enough other fighters to judge them. I din't see fighters as something you can just pick up & play. You need to learn the game to be able to make a sound judgement.
Just curious Crappy, what does the original Soul Calibur have over it's sequel?
StompBrother - July 16, 2004 01:48 PM (GMT)
5. Samurai Shodown II
Old, yes. But still one of the most atmospheric and thoroughly enjoyable fighting games ever. Overtly cool and the game engine really did feel like you are at a sparring match between two powerful warriors. The charcaters may not be balanced, but who cares. The gameplay is so fun. Charlotte my beautiful lady. Marry me and forget about that loser Haohmaru.
4. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Just starting out with this title really, but I like the potential of it already that it got the 4th spot. It's not overflowing with moves, but the options open to you at anytime is simply breathtaking. It's one for the more "mature" fighting game fans I suppose. Lot's of mind games in this. Will probably climb to 3rd or even 2nd spot with further play.
3. The King Of Fighters '98
Well now. Still the best KoF to date, with '03 maybe able to clinch it but I don't know. It's just too damn good to play. Well balanced, fantastic selection of characters, responsive and the best King Of Fighters experience out of the lot.
2. Soul Calibur 2
One reason alone.... IVY!
OK, I guess I better state other reasons too then. One of the most balanced fighters and it's fast and furious gameplay really gets the blood pumping. SC2 really shows why fighting games are a league of their own in videogameing. Button mashers can have some fun, fighting game nuts will get the rewards as mastering the game is oh so thoroughly rewarding. Counters, parries, power moves, throws, etc etc. Not only that, you also have a visual audio feast that is simply breathtaking. Not as daunting as VF4evo which makes it more accesible. Plus it's got Ivy!!!! EVERYONE MUST BOW DOWN TO THE QUEEN!!!!! NOW!!!!!
1. Capcom Vs SNK 2
Best 2D Fighter EVER! If this isn't on your list, then you seriously do not know what makes a 2D fighting game good. You can't go wrong with this. 48 characters from the best of Capcom and SNK's fighters. All the different "grooves" mimicing play styles of the best Capcom or SNK games and even an option to create your own. GAH! I don't care if you don't get this. I have it and extremely happy! VICE OWNS YOU ALL!!!!!
Notable Mentions:
- Marvel Vs Capcom 2
- Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
- Garou: Mark Of The Wolves
- Last Blade 2
- KoF'99
- KoF2003
- Rival Schools
- Hybrid Heaven
- Smash Bros Melee
- Gotcha Force
- Power Stone

Wow. You sound like StorminNormin when he declared GGX2 the greatest 2D fighter EVA!. Apart from the fact these lists are people's 'favourite fighters' (and therefore wont necessarily contain 'the best fighter') you'd be shocked to learn not everyone likes the CvsSNK games. And some of these people are heavily into 2D brawlers, so its not just weekend players like me.
I played CvsSNK2 on XBOX last week and my friend and I were pretty underwhelmed. Sure it has a bunch of characters, but Im not a fan of the SNK/ Capcom mixing. I also wasnt very keen on the polygon backrounds.
Now you can tell me all the deep gameplay and stuff involved and I'll roll my eyes ... cause i probably wont get half of what you say. But I do know what I like. And I'd rather play SF33rd, Garou or LB2 ...rather than some abomination (yes Im exagerrating) that throws them all together and does nothing particularly well (oh no... now Im in trouble ;) ). CvsSNK2 is a fan's wet dream, but I dont think its the best game in its genre. And I dont like being told I'm missing some vital brain parts cause I dont rate it highly.

I could have listed 5 games, but the only good fighters I've sat down played properly have been SF2 and SC2.
Lets not speak of Bloody Roar.

1. KOF 2001
2. KOF 2000
3. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
4. Street Fighter Alpha
Can't get anymore, I am not that heavily into fighters and even 4 was hard to get, I didn't think alpha was that great.

Manny M - July 17, 2004 04:13 PM (GMT)
Probably got something to do with it being the first, and a new and more exciting experience the first time it was played.

Now I know that this thread hasn't been posted in for many many ages, but I hope that resurrecting in actually raises some good discussion about fighting games, I love these things to death.
1. Guilty Gear XX #Reload
I don't really think I need to rave much about this... oh what the hell, here it is:
| QUOTE |
1) Considered a revolution of the 2D fighting genre, it's system is quite different to anything else out there, and sets itself apart from the SF clones. 2) Kind of obscure. Since the novels and other things never got released outside of Japan it's an absolute pleasure to seek out different pieces of information and source the mythology out on the net that is Guilty Gear. 3) Soundtrack. My favourite of any game that is released, they consist of good old fashioned heavy rock (not metal), with some masterful guitar work in all of the tracks. 4) Insanely obscure game, it was never released here, despite versions of it that continually get released in Japan that sometimes leak to the US. I mean really... there is now a PS2, Xbox and PC version of it... there is no reason to not own it unless you have a phobia that doesn't let you buy anything PAL. 5) The character designs. OMG the character designs. The anime like designs are all very unique. How many games feature a dude that fights with a pool cue, or a crazy guy with a giant scalpel, a tiny midget with a giant sword, a possessed guy with a broken back, a small chick with a yoyo who is actually a guy, a small chick with a giant anchor that IS actually a chick, and most recently, a pale chick wrapped in bloodied bandages who fights with a giant axe like key with a freaky eye in it. GAH! I could go on forever. |
2. Super Smash Bros Melee: I'm not going to go into a debate on whether this qualifies or not, but the game has just as much depth as conventional fighters (as well as a healthy tournament scene in the US and Japan), it just takes quite a bit of searching to find it.
http://www.smashboards.com/ to find it. :P
3. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike: Anyone that has heard of this game, and has heard anything of Evolution 2004 has seen the Daigo vid. The game just takes SF to a whole new level with the parry system. Hell, I suck at this game, but I enjoy downloading and watching vids from the net of tournies in HK and even Aus. Thats just how cool it is, so long as you can appreciate whats going on.
4. King of Fighters 2003: I had to put a KOF right? Heh, I enjoy it purely because it's easy to pick up and play, and still quite cool. I chose 2003 simply because it's the newest and I don't really have a preference. It is much cool than SvC: Chaos though.
5. Soul Calibur 2: Hah, an actual 3D fighter. I'm not really big on them, but SC2 is an enjoyable social game, so that is good enough for me.
Neo Sephiroth - November 19, 2004 05:02 AM (GMT)
ooohh I love these things
1. Street Fighter II - Absolute classic and still holds up today
2. Soul Calibur - A milestone in gaming, a terrific fighter with great style
3. King of Fighters 98 - The pinnicle of the serier IMO
4. Guilty Gear X2 - Absolutly crazy fighters with a very solid fight engine
5. Tekken 3 - Yet to surpassed by its sequels
eggman - December 23, 2004 08:55 AM (GMT)
Here's mine
5. Capcom vs SNK 2 : One of the finest examples of a 2D fighter done right.
4. Powerstone 1 or 2 : One of the BEST party games ever made still play it today, which is a testament to the games quality. Why Capcom haven't made Powerstone 3 yet is beyond me.
3. Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike : Awesome game and my favorite 2D fighter on any system.
2. Soul Calibur: The reason to buy a DC even today. Was years ahead of it's time both in the visual and the gameplay department. Only reason this isn't my favorite game on the DC is because of Yu Suzuki and Shenmue. Still, SC is leaps and bounds more fun than it's sequel and would still play the original over the sequel anyday of the week.
1. Virtua Fighter 4 : Evolution: The best fighting game available on any of the current generation of consoles. No fighting game has had this effect on me before, ever since I first played Street Fighter II at the arcades 13 years ago. This game is the main reason why I still have faith in Sega and their devs. A timeless classic, best game on the PS2 and up in the top 2 games released for the current generation of consoles.
Gio - December 24, 2004 10:53 AM (GMT)
I really have only played 3 fighters enough to make judgement on them..
1. Super Smash Bros. Melee - GCN
I don't care if it's not technically a fighter, it get's my no.1 spot. Me and my mate played this abouta year and a half straight, nearly everytime he was over, it was in with the SSBM disc. We still get a round in every now and then. ^_^
Probably my fave game on the GCN.
2. Sould Calibur II - GCN
:woot: Sword fighting heaven! This is giving my cube a good workout every time a friend comes around. :D
3. Super Smash Bros. - N64
Basically re-ignited my gaming addiction, years after finishing Mario 64, and when nobody wanted to play Mario Kart...
So... I need to play more fighters..
:dance3: SSBM RULES!
[DZ] - December 24, 2004 09:35 PM (GMT)
King of Fighters "96"-? (Arcade)
Tekken 3 (PSone)
Street Fighter 2 (Arcade)
Soul Calibur 2 (PS2)

Hum. I don't know if I've even played 5 fighting games...
1) Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (PS2)
2) Killer Instinct (SNES)
3) Soul Calibur 2 (GCN)
...
yeah, I didn't think so. They are the only ones WORTH MENTIONING that I've played. I just bought Capcom Vs. SNK for PS1 for $10 (yay!), but I haven't played it enough to add to the list.
Cubeoid - May 14, 2005 02:06 PM (GMT)
This section is seriously lacking some positng action. Anyway seeing as this as about as recent as topics go here I'll list mine.
1. Soul Calibur 2 - Pure fighting and graphical bliss. Plus it has Ivy.
2. Street Fighter 2: Turbo - The first SF game I really got into and it's still a lot of fun today.
3. Killer Instinct - I absolutley love this game. It was a just another Rare gem for the SNES.
4. Dead or Alive 3 - Yeah I know...I haven't played a wholelot of fighting games but i enjoyed this one for a while.
5. Super Smash Bros - I'd rate this higher but it doesn't really count under the threadrules so here it is just filling in the fifth spot. Yay.
/backslash - May 14, 2005 02:24 PM (GMT)
Why hasn't someone mentioned Rival Schools?! Shame on you!
Anyway...
1. Rival Schools - Psone & Arcade (the ultimate experience and made by Capcom to boot)
2. Super Street Fighter II - Snes & Arcade (ahh, memories)
3. Dead or Alive 2 - PS2, Dreamcast (fan service ahoy! *drools*)
4. Final Fight - Arcade, Snes (Guy was possibly my fav character)
5. Mortal Kombat II (introduction to more blood filled fatalities)
ultracrazy1 - May 14, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
1. Soul Calibur 2
Just the best weapons fighter out there. So many options at every situation.
2. SF3: Third Strike
Best 2D animation in a fighting game, and the things that people have discovered are insane.
3. Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate
Great graphics, unlockables, and the only 3D fighter on xbox live. More capable than many give it credit for, though I'd like to see a lot of gameplay changes...
4. Capcom v Snk 2 Mark of the Millenium
One of the best lineups, 6 grooves, and excellent potential (everybody must see the sairec video).
5. Marvel vs Capcom 2
Completely insane, borderline broken game. Just fun, not about serious competition, just all about bizarre moves, cameos, and high combo scores.
Xonic64 - April 21, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
I'm not usually a fighter fan but if I had to put up a list...
1. TMNT Tournament Fighters
2. Tekken 3
3. Soul Calibur 2
4. Final Fight
5. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Drake - April 21, 2008 09:38 AM (GMT)
I'm not really a fan of fighting games myself, but I seem to tend to lean on the OLD SCHOOL fighting games than the current generation fighting games. This is my list of top 5 fighting games.
5. Mortal Kombat - This game was great! I love unlocking IDOL. I still remember the code for it too.
4. Tekken 3 - Another Favorite of mines. A really fun game, but can be unbalanced due to some fighters (EDDIE).
3. Dead or Alive 3 - One word: UNBELIEVABLE. The graphics in this game is so nice that it seems like I'm really in the game.
2. Marvel VS Capcom - The name of the game pretty much says it all. A very fun game, but I prefer picking the characters from Capcom.
1. Street Fighters! - LOL, yeah this game was the best. It was so addicting also. I remember playing for hours non stop with my brother, friends, or cousins.
Decman - June 10, 2008 07:23 PM (GMT)
5. Toshinden 4
4. Mortal Kombat
3. Soul Calibur II
2. Soul Blade
1. Tekken 4
Yes. I am retro. :P
Man, I haven't played an up-to-date fighting game in absolutely ages...
dave_cool31 - June 11, 2008 08:58 AM (GMT)
1) Super Smash Bros. Melee (probably Brawl soon)
2) that is all.
