Title: Halo on GBA?
Description: Rumour

It may sound weird, but check this letter that was on IGN's

I hear things... Specifically, a Halo game for GBA.
No, I'm not a crackpot, or even a 10 year old kid. I'm not joking. I hear from a trusted source that this may happen. Not sure what KIND of game it may be.
What are you waiting for? Go ask someone.
Zoniax
Well, this was something that I've known for months about, but was literally sworn to secrecy by the people involved (just like many OTHER things I know but can't say). But since it's been mentioned in another publication, I can confirm that, yes, Halo is in the works for the GBA. That's all I can say, on risk of having my fingernails ripped off with a bottle opener.
Note added 6/11/04: This e-mail has triggered a response on Bungie's website:
There is no Game Boy version of Halo planned, and none in production. It's very unlikely that such a version would ever happen for all the obvious reasons, and the less obvious reasons, that the ColecoVision talks fell apart and The Bandai Pippin version is taking up all our development bandwidth…
We, of course, all can go back and forth...but I'm sticking to my guns on this. I've been told by multiple development sources that a Halo GBA project has at least been in the "looking into" stages since before Christmas. Anything can happen between now and then, of course, but don't expect it until 2005 if production moves forward. I'm normally against publishing "rumors" as news stories, which is why this is the first I've ever reported it...this is something I've known about for MONTHS. And since I've seen this same rumor posted in two separate publications in the past few weeks, I thought I'd stick my neck out and confirm that, at least from what I know, that the at least rumors had a lot of strength to them.

So what do you guys think? Could it be happening, despite Bungie's response? And if it is to happen, what type of game could it turn into? FPS? Side-scroller?
Toby - June 12, 2004 03:34 PM (GMT)
I dont think/hope it would be a side-scroller that would seem to boring HALO.
Suity - June 12, 2004 04:40 PM (GMT)
I seriously doubt it will happen. Bungie is owned by MS right? Also there is no way the GBA could handle Halo, so why waste money on a watered down piece of shit?

| Maybe for DS? |
Give this man a prize.
If Metroid Prime can work on the DS, Halo probably can too. Not that the graphics will be equal.
I still doubt it though.
I also like the part where he says "just like many OTHER things I know but can't say" Real smooth.

Microsoft own Rare and they have already released Sabre Wulf and Banjo Kazooie for the GBA. There is definitely a strong possibility that it could happen as Microsoft have already stated they will not be competing in the handheld market currently, hence may as well may profits off developing GBA games. However I would definitely prefer a portable Halo game to be release on either the DS or PSP.

Yeah good point I forgot about that, well my second point still stands though so if it does happen it will be on the DS.
borgster101 - June 13, 2004 11:34 AM (GMT)
Hmm, the GBA seems limited in technology to handle Halo, the DS or the PSP on the other hand............
BrotherEstapol - June 13, 2004 12:12 PM (GMT)
M$ Games Studio have said that they will not be developing any DS games, so the GBA seems like a more likley option.
And the chances of it being a FPS would be very slim, I'm thinking it'll be a combonation of 2d Side Scroller indoors(ala Metroid) and an Isometric View(like Tony Hawk) for outdoors.
That's assuming they release it. :)

Even more rumour control, it has been confirmed by Bungie that there is NOT a GB version in development nor will there ever be...

Either this Craig fellow is full of shit, or Bungie are trying keep this under wraps.
DJ-Civic - June 13, 2004 02:25 PM (GMT)
Well Craig is a trustworthy guy. If he can talk about something, he will. And like he said, he won't post rumours as news or fact.
So yes, it's either happening and Bungie don't want it revealed yet or it isn't happening at all. IF it is going to happen, I'd imagine it would be an isometric shooter like Max Payne.
NismoR34 - June 13, 2004 03:50 PM (GMT)
Hm, this thread was a little bit of a suprise.
While everyone brings up good points, I don't think it will happen. Purely for the fact that Halo is going to be outdated by it's sequel and all focus will be on said sequel. If it happens then great but if it doesn't then I don't care.
CLL - June 14, 2004 01:33 AM (GMT)
I don't think it will happen either. But it would be interesting to see what kind of game they would have in mind if it was true.

You can't spell ignorant without ign...
Honestly, I think this is just a lame attempt by ign to draw in the crowds, it is not the first time Bungie have had to be on rumour control. Reporters that go on stupid rumours are seriously annoying.
Besides it wouldn't make sense, and I'm sure this has been pointed out already, but to Bungie, Nintendo is the competition... why on earth would they take the best Xbox game released to date, and put in on a competitors console? It makes absolutely no sense, no matter which way you look at it.

Actually it does make some sense, since Microsoft ain't putting a hand held out, heck I read article somewhere, posssibly Computer and Videogames, where they interviewed someone from Microsoft and their response were that they were happy for Nintendo have the portable market and it was something they weren't looking into.
This could be good news, although we all would rather a DS / PSP version, to think 32player wireless multiplayer...

If it's gonna happen, the chances of it being based one the 1st game would be low methinks.
It could easily be about the lead up to the events of Halo.(based on one of those Halo novels maybe?)
[DZ] - June 15, 2004 05:12 AM (GMT)
I doubt it will be on the GBA, maybe on the DS like mentioned above. But Halo is all about good graphics and huge environments, I doubt it will be any good. :|
~DC - June 15, 2004 07:03 AM (GMT)
Well we know that the PSP is capable of producing PS2-like graphics and environments so if the game was released for the next generation portable systems I reckon it could have a chance of turning out very good.
Spag - June 16, 2004 03:40 AM (GMT)
Maybe a Halo game is being made, just no by Budgie? ;)
CLL - June 16, 2004 06:26 AM (GMT)
No one would be allowed to, unless Bungie gave them permission to.

because nintendo would properbly want it for GCN then and Bungie would be pissed off.

Trust me when I say it makes no sense, despite the fact that Microsoft do not wish to enter the hand held market, they would still not support the competition. Considering that Nintendo make the GCN which is in direct competition, why spend so much time and money developing a game which will only see the competition at an advantage finance wise?

Pre-emptive promotion, maybe? Microsoft could be treading the waters of the handheld market, only to release some handheld doohickie two or three years from now, building that market off of the success of some of their titles from the Gameboy market.
borgster101 - June 19, 2004 02:26 AM (GMT)
Microsoft has already allowed Rare to release numerous GBA games, in fact Rare have released more GBA games than Xbox games :P .
DJ-Civic - June 19, 2004 06:15 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Rare is developing for the competition, so why not Bungie? ;)
Well
Gamespot have reported on the rumour and posted the following images:
