Title: Mario Kart- back to it's roots?

JJJames7 - June 8, 2004 03:26 AM (GMT)
After playing Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, I realised that I did not like the two people in a kart at all.

I would like to see another Mario Kart, but back to it's roots, where the fun really is. Failing that, theres always NFSU2 and Burnout 3...

Are there any decent Kart racers coming out?

A Mario Kart with one person per kart is coming out on the Nintendo DS, it is a launch title actually.

I thought Mario Kart was great fun...while it lasted, that is. I had no probs with 2 karters, it was a cool idea, and Ninty pulled it off reasonably well. The track design also gets the big thumbs up, and were much better than those on the 64.
My only main prob with Double Dash!! was the shortness of the single-player. Once again, just as in Mario Golf, sold the gamer short on the course/tracks provided.

The whole two characters on one kart thing was a welcomed edition in my book, essentially though it wasn't that different to previous MK games once you got used to it.

It wasn't the two characters per cart that annoyed me but rather the control change. Once you get used to Double Dash you should pull out the old 64 and see how better the controls were. Anyway Mario Kart DS looks like 64 so that can only be a good thing.

I actually liked the two characters and felt that DD!! was the best in the series.

i liked Double Dash alot. The two racers/one kart was a feature to keep things fresh, you can't make the same game with just updated graphics. ;) The only other gripe i had with Double Dash is that the battle stages weren't as fun.

yeah shadow, same school of thought here, playing the donut battle stage in mk:64 at a friend's house, was what got me hooked on video games and made me purchase a n64, funilly enough though, i never ended up buying mk:64...

I don't think it's just the poor level design but also the fact that controlling the cart is a lot harder in DD. For instance it is extremely hard to manouver and turn around especially after playing 64.

I hope that they keep the 2 players in one kart thing in the next game, but also allow you to select a single player in a kart option. So if you felt like a change you could just play with a single person in the kart rather then have two persons.

borgster101 - June 10, 2004 12:44 AM (GMT)
The option would be good, since we could have the best of both worlds in one! :D

I'd rather it was back to the single-person days of the last game - I actually found that more fun myself. The two persons was new, but I didn't find it that fun however.

I would've liked to see the actual switching of drivers playing a greater role, giving a greater customisation emphasis that's more relevant to the Kart's performance.

For example; if you have Yoshi and DK, you can switch to DK as driver and gain a minor speed boost but lose acceleration and cornering - making DK good for stretches, but when you approach a corner, you switch to Yoshi to gain his cornering benifits. As it is, switching is only good for storing items that you're saving (e.g. save a boost for a shortcut), or for increasing your chances to get an item you like (e.g. I played the Koopa brothers, and usually kept Red Koopa at the front).

DD was okay, but it was strictly one of Nintendo's "evolutionary" titles, probably too much so for me to enjoy it. I felt the tracks were generally worse than MK64 (compare the two DK tracks, eck); and those that weren't were just rehashes. The new control system didn't really do it for me; I much preferred the handling on MK64. I'm also one of those people who can't stand Nintendo's recently popularised spin-off characters like Waluigi and Toadette. I think the problem with these characters is that they have only ever filled space in Nintendo's party style-games. The great-8 from MK64 have always had significant roles in Nintendo games (except maybe Koopa Troopa?). Perhaps Nintendo should give them roles in Mario platforming games; sort of catapault them into being 'real' characters.

That's a great idea and definitely how DD should have ended up.

Agree completely.

Don't you think it may have made the game a tad too hectic though? It's an excellent idea which would have definitely added a much greater layer of depth and strategy however I reckon swapping characters whilst powersliding and using weapons would have been too much.

Saying that, I don't know why the hell Nintendo bothered with the multiple characters idea. It was merely a rubbish gimmick with no influential means.

Pauly - June 10, 2004 05:49 AM (GMT)
You would switch before you turn the corner not while you're powersliding.

Waluigi is a cool character, but I would like to see him in a Mario adventure so he could have some "place" in the series.

Wario is the evil dude you have to beat in some of the GB MArio games so he has been in a Mario adventure

He referred to Walugi.

cd2 - June 11, 2004 01:13 AM (GMT)
hmm so he did!

borgster101 - June 11, 2004 02:57 AM (GMT)
 I was thinking Waluigi would have been in Luigi's Mansion, since he is supposed to be Luigi's rival, but there was no luck with that :(
