Title: Platinum Game Covers
Description: Platinum covers vs normal covers

DJ-Civic - April 26, 2004 12:58 PM (GMT)
Ok, I've heard that some people hate the PS2 platinum covers for games, mainly due to the fact that the original artwork gets shrinked, the disc's art is replaced with nothing and any sort of extra disc, like MGS2, gets removed too.
So what do you guys think of these covers?

Personally I don't really care. Although like I mentioned above, game like MGS2 that came with an extras DVD should be purchased in their original incarnations.
And while the platinum disc "art" is shoking, you never see the disc when playing the game anyway. ;)

Ghost Boy - April 26, 2004 01:39 PM (GMT)
I don't particularly like the Platinum ones.

I can understand wanting to make them different from the original release, but that doesn't mean making them lesser. The silver case is cool but, like Civ said, the cover has been shrunk way too much.

Up the original! B)

Kid Wakelin - April 26, 2004 01:43 PM (GMT)
I just don't like the fact that it is worse and they cheapen them. They also cheapen the actual disc and on ebay I will not buy a platinum game.

I am also prepared to pay a premium to have a non platinum game :)

NismoR34 - April 26, 2004 01:49 PM (GMT)
They suck.
I can't stand them at all, platinum is a nice colour, but not the way it's implemented into the Platinum games.
What sucks even more, is most of my Ps2 games are platinum. :|

~DC - April 26, 2004 02:11 PM (GMT)
Personally I can't see the overall big deal with them. It's exactly the same game at a far cheaper price as far as I'm concerned. :D

OldSkOoL - April 26, 2004 02:17 PM (GMT)
I'll side with DC on this one, I don't really give all that much care into the covers. As far as it goes for me I know I'm getting a quality game at a far cheaper price. Boxart is really just a bonus.

CLL - April 27, 2004 12:19 AM (GMT)
I don't mind them if the games are cheaper. But otherwise I would prefer it if they kept the original packaging.

Tr1gger Vandal - April 27, 2004 04:03 AM (GMT)
Eh, I'm not overly fussed, but I admit the non-platinum covers do look nice.

For example, I picked up a second hand copy of Tekken Tag Tournament the other day, and had the option of Platinum version or original. I picked the original only because it looked prettier, and it was the same price. But I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, or pay any extra moneys :P

And I mean, you get the game almost half price when it hits platinum, so I'm not complaining :P

Machiavelli - April 27, 2004 04:28 AM (GMT)
I can't stand platinum covers. I try to avoid them at all costs, consequently the wallet takes a beating on many occasions.

tinklez - April 27, 2004 06:03 AM (GMT)
I loathe them as well, and I'll always try to hunt down the original copies even if it'll set me back a few extra dollars (has to be reasonably priced compared to it's Platinum counterpart of course). I just can't stand the sight of Platinum covers next to games with original covers in my collection.

TrinityJayOne - April 27, 2004 06:24 AM (GMT)
Aye, I feel the same. The PSX platinum covers weren't too bad (a platinum stripe with "platinum" written on it), but they PS2 ones are very annoying. The disc art doesn't bother me, except for 2 games- the first 2 Gran Turismo titles. If you rub the disc enough to heat it with friction, it smells like burning rubber. Cool!! :D Of course the platinum versions don't have this. :(

Lordage - April 27, 2004 06:28 AM (GMT)
Yeah I really don't like them. I mean, sure, they're cheap and all but they look.. Well, crap.
I don't see why they have to ruin the whole case and the disk with all the sickening silver and Platinum logos... I feel a small "Platinum" logo on the cover would have been sufficient.

I rarely buy Platinum games as it is anyway.

Well you should have bought the original versions anyway considering you sound like such a motorhead and all. :P

Kid Wakelin - April 27, 2004 08:14 AM (GMT)
I remember getting home and rubbing the cd...it was _meant_ to smell like rubber. No idea what it actually smelt of.

This goes down alongside the Virtual Boy as the worst gimmick ever :P

Dunno what you're talking bout mate, it smelt EXACTLY like burnt rubber when I did it.

I just borrowed my mate's copy of the game, and when he wanted it back (took him a long time :P) I bought my own.

Gilder - April 27, 2004 11:42 AM (GMT)
I usually try to buy a platinum game just after the price drop. That way I can get the old original copies that the store is trying to clear (although this doesnt always work).

I hate the look of the covers, plus they remove the memory card holder, which bugs me as well. But Sony has to advertise the price drop somehow ...

Fyuusii - April 27, 2004 12:28 PM (GMT)
Not overly fussed with them. Given the opportunity, I will pick up the original but it doesn't phase me too much. One of my greatest shames though is living with my platinum copy of Final Fantasy VII when I had the original in great, great shape many a year ago. Sold my first PSX and it's games for a bunch of rare (at the time) and crappy South Park plushies. God, I'm an idiot...

Doesn't really bother me in the long run, though. The game itself is what counts, not the packaging. My current copy is in mint condition and I like to laugh at poor sods who can't even find a second-hand one. :P

Buffoon - April 27, 2004 02:07 PM (GMT)
Hmm, the platinum covers are definitely not as good as the originals. But there is something a little bit tawdry about the platinum covers... it's as if they're sitting in my collection, mocking me, whispering incessantly in my ear, 'What's the matter? You're not good enough to be able to buy full price games? You have to make do with us CHEAP and NASTY LOSERS? You fail at everything you do! Of course you don't deserve new release games! YOU LOSER! Now go and drink a bottle of drain cleaner!' Um, anyone else have that problem?

Well, at least the PS2 Platinums are better than the Xbox ones... any colour scheme that adds more green to an Xbox game box is a bad thing.

That's an idea I've had before, but most of the platinum games I wanted had been on platinum for a good while, so it's hard to find new and original copies on the shelf. :(

Ghazrat - April 28, 2004 02:43 AM (GMT)
I don't mind the covers that much (I don't love them either mind you), it's the platinum discs I despise more. They were so pretty, then they had to uglify them. But then again, none of my PS2 games are platinum.......yet. I'm gonna try to do the "Buy a game just as it's gone platinum so I get the normal case" with Jak II, but it's taking it's sweet time to go platinum.

BLASPHEMY!!!

:P

I can't stand the Playstation 2 Platinum covers, they're ugly, but at least they're not as bad as the Xbox's equivelent.

*Shudders at his copy of 'Xbox Classics' Splinter Cell*

MrRae - April 28, 2004 05:16 AM (GMT)
I don't mind the silver on the cases, I just hate it when they go and shrink the cover art, there's no need frankly. Thumbs down on platinum cases for me :P

finalazy - May 3, 2004 08:14 AM (GMT)
I cant stand it! It really annoys me how it differs from the other games in my collection. If a game has gone platinum, I'll usually look for it on ebay.

JJJames7 - May 17, 2004 10:37 AM (GMT)
Ditto Finalazy. Although I don't have any PS2 platnium games anymore (sold them), I do have Metroid Prime Platnium which annoys me alot. I have to put it on the end of the sheld because it looks weird! Yes I'm a freak. :P But I wouldn't pay $50 extra for the normal case, that's just retarded.

Übermensch - May 17, 2004 12:44 PM (GMT)
I don't know if this has been brought up already but isn't "I'm cool with them," the same as "I don't mind them"?

DJ-Civic - May 17, 2004 02:06 PM (GMT)
Sush you. :P
Fixed it now.

[DZ] - May 31, 2004 11:55 PM (GMT)
They're OK. Sony should try to spice them up.

Ghost Boy - June 1, 2004 12:00 AM (GMT)
All they need to do is have less silver and more cover in my opinion. There is nothing overly wrong with the silver, it's just too dominating. Of course, having no real design on the CD itself doesn't sell the quality. What would be wrong with keeping the original CD design and writing 'Platinum' across the top?

tinklez - June 4, 2004 03:33 PM (GMT)
The US "Greatest Hits" boxarts ain't too bad -- simple and not so dominating. These kind of covers for our "Platinum" range I wouldn't mind so much.

Yeah they're not too bad as the original artwork is still there, just with the "greatest hits" bit hanging over it. I don't like the red, so a silver strip would probably look better.

[DZ] - June 5, 2004 11:44 PM (GMT)
They should throw in special "making of" DVD'd with doco's etc in Platinum.

...Oh wait, that would affect the price tag! Original Game: $95. Platinum: $35... +Special DVD = $100... :|

Pauly - June 6, 2004 10:54 AM (GMT)
I hate platinum covers. They should just sell the game for less like on the cube.

Not too shabby in comparison. Pity the same can't be said for PSOne games... :(

Iroquois - June 15, 2004 12:27 AM (GMT)
The platamanum covers are ugly - they shrink down what is in most cases good boxart and - well, no. I hate them.

Toby - June 15, 2004 10:44 AM (GMT)
I dident think so many people hated the platinum covers :o
I actually dont care about the cover as I buy the game to play the game and not look at the cover. I am actually waiting for Jak 2 to go platinum as I would rather buy Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Jak 2 Renegade rather then only buying Jak 2.

Nitrous - July 7, 2004 05:23 AM (GMT)
Platinium covers...hummm....i dont mind them at all. they might not be as good as normal covers but its not the case, its the game that it holds <_<
