Title: Infinium Labs' Phantom...it's still around?!
Description: It actually has a release date now...o_O
TrinityJayOne - May 24, 2004 05:00 AM (GMT)
I was just browsing
How Stuff Works.com when I came upon
this. It seems that they're still around! What's more, the Phantom has been given a release date of November this year. Their
site has been vastly updated since I saw it, it even looks professional now! *gasp* Funnily enough, their news section makes note of their upcoming appearance at E3 (it was dated May 10th), but there's no news articles after that on the site and I haven't heard anything of a Phantom presence at E3 elsewhere...
Just what the hell are Infinium Labs up to?
fishonthecarpet - May 24, 2004 05:01 AM (GMT)
Maybe they were at E3, but they were phantom-like, and noone could see them!
EDIT: You know what? That was a really, stupid post.
I'm sorry
TrinityJayOne - May 24, 2004 05:02 AM (GMT)
I think it's more likely noone wanted to see them. :P

I've been following them ever since they first mentioned The Phantom...which is a long time. These guys are either the dumbest people that ever lived, or this is the most elaborate joke in video game history. All they do is say "it's coming", make a bunch of "yeah right" style comments about what The Phantom will do. They have never shown us a prototype, a screenshot, or even the name of a game. What the hell are these guys trying to pull?! Seriously, it's highly annoying.
They're the laughing stock of the gaming world, I have no idea if they even take themselves seriously...

I know, hence my bewilderment when I saw they were still around. How and why they think people will want to pay US$29.95/month (their tentative subscription price) just to play games (which have another price tag to download) is truly beyond me. There's also the matter of games development. I don't see any current developers pouring their resources into this "console".

It's "supposed" to be close to a PC, so it would play a lot of the games that the PC gets. But the price that is suggested is ridiculous, and the whole thing (hardware, price, etc..) is really just a big joke. No-one takes it seriously, and personally I don't see the Phantom going very far if it's released.

I don't think PA were to far off on this one. :P

Yup, the Phantom did have a presence at E3, and apparantly they're obsessed with Penny Arcade.

| When we arrived for our meeting, the doors actually had signs on them that said Flim-Flam, Chicanery, and so forth - just like the strip. We found this odd. |

| We did go see the Phantom guys though, talked to them for an unflinching hour about the Phantom and their plans for it just to whet your appetite. The CEO of the company did stop in very quickly to mention that he had just killed a dog, which seemed like an odd non-sequitur until I remembered the strip. At first, I was like man, look - daddy is working. I don't come truckin' into your office every time I make an animal die. |

Yeah, that's a classic PA moment.
To be honest, I find the whole thing rather amusing. Someone (or a group of folks) obviously invest a lot of time into perpetuating this hoax and for what? No one takes is seriously anymore. There was a brief moment when it caught the eye of a few folks, but that has long since passed.
You know something's slightly afoot when they're releasing later this year and no game developers have development kits. :)

Penny Arcade are fucking legends. They bring a reality to everything, and the whole Phantom fiasco is just another debacle that is going to rival the N-Gage for the 'Biggest Piece Of Shit Encased In Plastic' award.
BrotherEstapol - May 24, 2004 08:19 AM (GMT)
I found some pictures of the revamped Phantom during E3.
I was quite surprised, they seem to be going through with this thing.
Hell, they even have that ex-Xbox guy(Kevin Bachus) working for them now.

woah Infinium Labs went to the trouble of 3dmaxing a controller, that must be a big step for them..
TrinityJayOne - May 24, 2004 09:58 AM (GMT)
ROFL!!!!

Good call, Heat! I really don't see the point to what they're doing, it's simply insane. Either way, it'll never take off here (if it is infact real  ). With the state of Australia's broadband nobody will ever buy it!

What a load of sh*t! I thought it was meant to be a console.
I hope they realise this thing is going to fail miserably and pull out at the last minute.
CLL - May 25, 2004 02:36 AM (GMT)
Nah, who cares... let 'em fail miserably :P
OldSkOoL - May 25, 2004 03:21 AM (GMT)
Don't these people realise every night before they goto sleep that they are working on a lost cause?
