Title: Are we seeing the death of 2D gaming?
cd2 - May 24, 2004 03:25 AM (GMT)
Due to the handhelds now going with 3D graphics do you think that more games now will be 3D and we will see the total death of 2D graphics?
TrinityJayOne - May 24, 2004 03:55 AM (GMT)
Hmmm...something went wrong with the poll there, not sure what. Did you change the "amount of choices" drop-down box? Apparently that can cause errors in the polls. Just use the "single option" choice and put the possible choices each on a separate line. Anyhoo, I editted it and it seems to be working now.
On topic, I voted "yes". I think they are slowly dying out, but I don't think this is a good thing. Some of my fave RPG games are completely 2D, such as Suikoden. I think it may stay for a while in games like Street Fighter, but everywhere else seems to have left 2D graphics behind. Even the system menu on the Cube is in 3D! :nooo:

Unfortunately I think it is. Like anything in this world, consumer demand dictates what is made. In this case, the gamers who adore 2D gaming make up a vast minority of video game consumers. Handheld’s really are the last place 2D worlds exist and prosper, but when these new super beasts start landing in gamers' back pockets, developers will probably spend their time working on more 3D based games and less of the 2D kind.
Maybe it is time to move on though. 2D gaming has been done to death and there is so much more to achieve in the 3D world yet.
Nice poll, cd2!

I think it is dying out. But then technology nowadays and mainstream appeal would probably force developers into creating 3D games. As Gregg said, 2D gamers are now little more than a niche market. But I think this is a good thing, as games should generally aim to look and be better and there's not too much left that could be done in 2D which would remain interesting.

I voted yes and I think it is sad but still theres Viewtiful Joe and others so hope is not all lost but will be as rare as my dates with the oppersit sex.

Yes, 2D gaming is being phased out, and this shits me immensly. The atrophy of 2D games is a direct result of the emergence of gaming as a viable business industry. Developers are cashing in on latest technology advances and striving for that 'wow' factor by trying to best imitate the world around us. Games are becoming less about the gameplay and more about the package, and it has been happening for years. Several companies still strive to provide a thoroughly enjoyable experience but find they need to compete with the technologically impressive yet gameplay deficient titles to produce an economically viable game.
Its a damn shame.

With the PSP and DS, the signs dont look to good.
But then again, Developers could create a 3D-2D side-scoller. :o
craptest - May 24, 2004 10:29 AM (GMT)
2D hardware and 2D engines are dead ....but not '2D gaming'. I think the distinction should be made.
Replace all the polygon ships in Ikaruga with sprites and you've still got the same game. 2D genre's are here to stay.
Look at the 2D fighter. Totally different feel to the real 3D fighters like SC and DOA3. I cant see this genre's disappearing anytime soon.
3D games are utilizing 'quasi-2D' gameplay more and more. Even Metroid Prime, a very 3D FP adventure, had 'retro' moments (The fixed perspective ball sections).
True 2D graphics will disappear cause theyre largely redundant. But the 2D essence lives on! :D Say good by to sprites... that's all.
OldSkOoL - May 24, 2004 11:22 AM (GMT)
Sad to say but they are on the way out. Most of my favourite games are in 2D.
Hopefully they will live on with ROMs.
StompBrother - May 24, 2004 01:18 PM (GMT)
It's pretty sad but 2D graphics is slowly gonna get phased out. 2D gameplay will remain in some form.
Also 2D fighters WILL NEVER be the same with 3D graphics at all. Sure yeah it's 2D style gameplay using 3D graphics, but it's the frames of animation on drawn sprites that is the building blocks of 2D fighting games. The timing of your command and what you see relies entirely on the knowledge of the animation routine. This is really apparent in something like Street Fighter 3 where parrying requires exact approximation of the parry to the impact of the "hit" animation.
Also, take any Street Fighter game and compare it to it's 3D graphics counterpart Street Fighter EX and you can clearly see what I mean with how animation frames works in 2D graphics fighters.
Oh well that's enough for me. If it gets phased out, then so be it. But I'm confident it won't dissapear that quickly, there's still a small minority that enjoys "hand" drawn art.

Add another vote for "yes" from me. It's sad because playing 2D games makes for a nice change after playing 3D games all the time. Although like craptest pointed out, 2D gameplay will live on in games like Ikaruga and Viewtiful Joe.
I hope developers don't abandon 2D games on the upcoming handhelds.

Cheers a big thanks for that, I'll have to remember your tip for next time. As this is the first poll I have ever made.
Anyway now that most people have replied to the poll I guess its time for my 2cents since it wont sway votes. I doubt it would of anyway but hey.
I thought of this question just the other day when I was playing super mario advanced 3 and for some reason I started to think about GT mobile for the PSP and it made me wonder if people thought the same thing, that 2D gaming is dying. At first I thought yes it is disappearing but then I thought about it some more and no it's just evolving into a different form like most people have said.

I think that as long as companies like Sammy, Capcom, Sega and SNK exist, 2D gaming will exist, although nowhere near as vapidly as 3D gaming.

Didnt SNK recently become Playmore?
1 down 3 to go :P

It won't die! :P
Come on, really; do you see the death of the greatest form of gaming coming soon?
Film Guru - May 26, 2004 08:36 AM (GMT)
I voted yes, sadly. :(
I love 2D games to death, after a recent all night gaming session playing only NES games with mates, I realised how much insane fun those games still are. While I love my 3D games and refuse to part with them, I feel the exact same way about my classic 2D games. Just gimmie more Link To The Past style games and I'll shut up.

Well, that's a grim assessment...
Though I don't see the other three going down so easily. :P

Tis a shame, but it is without a doubt. :(
NightfireDevil - June 27, 2004 09:58 AM (GMT)
Hi There,
Unfortunately like nearly everyone else on this forum i think it is...this topic saddens me as i started of on a sega master system (god rest its soul...wait it not dead yet still loved baby  ) any who gotta go cya
Big Pete - July 25, 2004 12:08 AM (GMT)
Sadly I don't think we'll se too much 2d gaming after this. They'll most likely have a few games like Viewtuful though.
Gio - July 30, 2004 10:29 AM (GMT)
2D gaming is being phased out..Though really, didn't anyone see this coming with the launch of N64/PSX?
Film Guru - August 3, 2004 09:55 AM (GMT)
I didn't see it coming to be honest. I honestly thought game makers wouldn't be dumb enough to stop making them.
With the amout of disk space we have for games now, imagine the sheer size 2D RPGs can be now!
Pauly - August 3, 2004 01:19 PM (GMT)
Let's hope developers see profit (not just money wise) in making games like VJ and Paper Mario. 2D is dying, but it doesn't necessarily have to.
Neo Sephiroth - November 19, 2004 05:55 AM (GMT)
hmmm well people will always be interested in 2D games and some 2D games are just plain more fun then some 3D games or a 3D sequel to a 2D game. Like craptest said 2D is still around but the gameplay part only as is the case with the new shooters like Ikaruga, R-Type Final and Gradius V. I think there might be a demand for 2D fighters because honestly the majority of 3D fighters can't compare to the difficulty of the obvious 2D fighters series' like Street Fighter and King of Fighters. We'll see what happens, but I don't wanna see 2D games go, there are still fresh approaches in 2D that cannot be easily replicated in 3D like Paper Mario and Viewtiful Joe.
~DC - November 19, 2004 05:58 AM (GMT)
As already mentioned numerous times Paper Mario 2 looks set to brighten 2D gaming future, despite the fact it also incorporates some 3D elements.
Personally I don't think the game could be created in 3D whilst keeping the same amazing artistic quality and charm that it has.
Gio - December 6, 2004 11:51 AM (GMT)
I wanna see a new 2D platformer for the GCN...
Maybe in the vein of Mario vs. DK? That's really fun ^_^
