Title: Evolution's banner
Description: It's too wide...
josh - May 20, 2004 09:55 AM (GMT)
Hey,
The banner at the top is too wide on my PC. It stretches the browser window out mucho. So I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else, or if my computer is just funny in the head...
I'm using Safari under MacOSX at 1280 x 1024 screen res.
Oh, and the tables end just at the right hand of the Halo guy, so I guess that should be the normal cutoff or some such?
So yeah, anyone else having this problem?
TrinityJayOne - May 20, 2004 10:00 AM (GMT)
For me the forums go to just under a centimetre away from the screen edges, no matter what resolution I use. The image stretches the page out at anything under 1024x768 (what I use). Can you give us a screenshot? I can't understand how the banner would stretch your resolution when it's not big enough to stretch mine (a smaller one).
_MetalliX_ - May 20, 2004 10:27 AM (GMT)
Well the forums stretch out for me, but if I was to complain, it would be that it isnt wide enough, there is a good 7cm gap between the banner and the edge of the screen. (18" Monitor, 1280x1024)
BrotherEstapol - May 20, 2004 10:57 AM (GMT)
If my calulations are correct, the banner should not strech for anything less that 1024x768.
Maybe it's cause your using a Mac. ;)
Gilder - May 20, 2004 11:16 AM (GMT)
I always thought the banner ended with the Master Chief.
Thanks for ruining my day. :P
Ghost Boy - May 20, 2004 11:23 AM (GMT)
It's absolutely perfect for me guys, we had no idea it was never right for anyone else.
My setup is 1024x768 with your standard WindowsXP theme. Maybe it is a Mac thing. Guru, can you let us know how you see it?
Here's mine:

Aye Mine is like Greggs.
:D
SMIThouse - May 20, 2004 11:40 AM (GMT)
I have, like 800x600 n' stuff. I don't know why I haven't changed it.
*changes screen resolution
FUCK, that is so much better
TrinityJayOne - May 20, 2004 11:50 AM (GMT)
Mine!I just changed my resolution after feeling insecure with my previous 1024x768 setting. :P This is at 1152x864.
Comrade Natrak - May 20, 2004 12:05 PM (GMT)
For me the banner isn't wide enough! I don't mind though, it doesn't effect my forum experience, I look at it once in a blue moon anyway.
I'm on 1280 x 1024
DJ-Civic - May 20, 2004 12:19 PM (GMT)
Dammit! It never crossed my mind that people that are on something other than 1024x768 could have problems with it.
Is there a way to fix it? I can easily adjust the banner's size.

*leaps in the room with Ninja-like swiftness to defend his beloved Mac* :ph43r:
I can confidently say is has nothing to do with your computer being a Mac josh. I also use MAC OS X with Safari, on a lower resolution than you and everything looks fine to me. No stretching, no nothing. It's all perfect. B)
Dunno what's going on mate, try screwing with your browser options. Personally, I have no idea what would cause that.
Hello - May 20, 2004 09:50 PM (GMT)
My computer does the same thing - but mine's a piece of shit from the mid-90s, so that's my excuse...
MrRae - May 21, 2004 02:16 AM (GMT)
No strechiness in my hood :P
Moggo - May 21, 2004 04:20 AM (GMT)
While we're on the topic, great job on the banner.
In the infamous words of Jim Carrey: 'I like it... alot.'

Ok I've got a screeny, but nowhere to host it. Can I call in a favour, someone?

You can attatch it to your post. Just look under the Post Icons for the attachment box.

Mine seems to fit perfectly. ;)
jawbreaker982 - May 22, 2004 12:04 PM (GMT)
It's stretched for me, but that is with 800x600. I absolutely hate anything else, so I guess I shall have to live with it... :(
SMIThouse - May 22, 2004 12:16 PM (GMT)
I couldn't live with anything but 800x600, but I made the switch and it suits me much better ;)

After looking at the screen cap you sent me, I'm convinced it has something to do with your settings or with the way your browser is reacting to the forum. Why? Well, the ad across the top is wider than the two boxes surrounding it (search, members, calendar & my controls, view new posts boxes).
For some reason your browser doesn't seem to be filling the forums out to the width it could. I'm not overly familiar with Macs (apart from Film Editing) so it might be a good idea to PM Guru and check what settings he's running at.
As far as having a banner that adjusts to screen size, I'm not sure the current Invision setup allows for a fully liquid display in the way we would need it. The reason the Evo banner is so wide is to cover a blue heading box that defaults to the width of the forum. It's not like Hyper where we can have a small logo that sits in the middle, as we would end up with some blue box hanging out each side.
I'll suggest this to the Invision crew for their next version though.
If you want it to fit perfectly in the meanwhile, you'll probably have to go 1024x768. :(
josh - May 23, 2004 12:40 AM (GMT)
That's alright mate, It's not like it destroys my forum experience, I was really only curious if my computer was broken or something. Thanks for all the help guys.
So it's case closed, I guess...
Sytadel - May 23, 2004 04:53 AM (GMT)
Guys, there's a simple fix to this problem. Rather than having the banner replace the front-image, have it replace the background image - and make it wider (so it's a perfect fit on 1280*1024, but the important details all fit in 800*600). I can explain why this would work, or you can just trust me.
Ghost Boy - May 23, 2004 06:57 AM (GMT)
As it is, it's set to perfectly suit a 1024x768 page, which is the most used size at the moment. If we made it wider to cover the background box (which is a code, making it liquid and hence very tough to cover), it wouldn't fit right on a 1024x768 page. It would also screw up 800x600 resolutions even further and look out of place for a majority of visitors. What we have now is the best middle ground for everyone. With that said, I have a hunch I can make it better so give me a little time to tinker.
