Title: The Official Alias Discourse Lounge
Description: Alias in here.
thebigm - April 26, 2004 02:38 AM (GMT)
Well similar rules apply here to the 24 Discourse lounge, i.e. no spoilers from future episodes.
This would have to be one of my favourite shows, being even better than 24 in my opinion, and it is good to see it on two nights a week.
~DC - April 26, 2004 03:39 AM (GMT)
Yes I must agree that it is very nice seeing the show getting a little more exposure on a weekly basis.
I have found this season to definitely be lacking in comparision to the previous two however. Maybe it has been because I have missed two episodes or the fact that it once again started off in extremely slow fashion and has yet to pick up to the exciting pace of the previous season.
I must admit that the episode from last week involving Sydney and her memory recollection process was without a doubt of the best episodes I have seen of Alias, period.
CLL - April 26, 2004 08:04 AM (GMT)
Another of my favourite shows, which is only better for the fact that we get to see it twice a week. Some of the recent episodes have been the best. Last week's recollection episode was really well done, but like 24, it would be good if Ch 7 didn't always show the good parts of next week in their preview.
bob the destroyer - April 26, 2004 11:06 AM (GMT)
excellent show all around. it did start off too slowly but now has a nice pace. going to miss the first half tommorow i think so someone had better fill me it :)
CLL - April 28, 2004 01:03 AM (GMT)
Well, last night's episode was great. It's good to finally hear how they tied in all the events that lead to her missing for two years.
And that ending - :) That was good. Although it was obvious that Lazarey was going to be killed. Open ground, transport, lots of tall buildings = important informant killed. A la, 24-style. You would think that it would be so obvious that a person would get sniped, that they would at least unload people under shelter, like in a car-park. Instead, they just give people a chance to take a shot at them.
Here's a question: How long must've it taken Rambaldi to plant pieces of his device everywhere around the world? There weren't any planes around during his time.
Anyway, looking forward to Thursday's episode. :)
thebigm - April 28, 2004 07:09 AM (GMT)
I would have to say that that was the best episode. peirod.
Just how it everything was tied up and explained, made feel better for watching this instead of doing hw.
~DC - April 28, 2004 07:45 AM (GMT)
From what I saw it was another top notch episode and it seems that over the last couple of episodes that this season is just starting to get cracking story wise.
Brilliant ending too. :)
Film Guru - May 1, 2004 03:44 AM (GMT)
For me, this is currently the best show on TV by a long shot. Every episode is compelling, and twists/events most shows would leave for a Season cliffhanger, Alias does on a regular basis. Best Season yet in my opinion, and only getting better. Now I wanna know what Sloane has to do with all this. :P
Übermensch - May 6, 2004 02:03 PM (GMT)
My all time favourite television show. This season started off a little slowly but it's been picking up tremendously as of late. Right now, I like it more than 24's season 3, but we're only halfway with both shows, so that could change...
Übermensch - May 11, 2004 12:42 PM (GMT)
Although the revelations and character development were at it's usual best, there was one flaw which bugged me about this episode and that was the exploration of two perspectives. The transition between the perspectives was kind of weak and off putting.
However, I must say, things are really shaking up. I sort of suspected that Sloane was Sydney's real father, but I never tried picking out clues that would confirm it. Only noticed a couple here and there in the first two seasons, but not much else.
What Sark did to Lauren was especially cool and Sark-like. She must be pretty pissed, but would she really rather the alternative (have Vaughn shoot her)? Silly woman.
Marshall was hilarious: "You can do it, you can do it, you can do it, Vaughn!" Too much time spent in the hospital helping his wife give birth. :D
Excellent episode continuity-wise, though the structure needed a little work.
8/10
Film Guru - May 11, 2004 12:54 PM (GMT)
Not one of the best episodes, and very un-Alias to have that mask mislead. But the revelation about Sydney's potential real father was cool. During the add break after that reveal I thought about it and it made perfect sense. Why Sloane was so nice to Sydney, why he always had such a connection with her...
Good episode, not great. Shame too, cause the episode contained quite a twist. Still the best show on TV!! :D
CLL - May 12, 2004 12:45 AM (GMT)
Didn't like the two perspectives either. Not that I don't like the idea, more that I didn't think it was done well. Lauren is like the bad version of Sydney (I reckon they must share the same outfits and wigs though).
That twist with Sloane hinting he might be Sydney's daughter was good, though not unexpected considering he didn't always seem to be too tough on her in the past seasons. And yeah, what Sark did to Lauren was cool, it really made her see what her husband was thinking. But then she can't say much, since she and Sark were getting it on earlier.
Übermensch - May 25, 2004 12:34 PM (GMT)
WHAT AN AWESOME EPISODE!!!
Everything about it was so cool! That last second was an excellent way to end it! It was tense, the twists were cool and I can't wait until next week!
10/10
CLL - May 26, 2004 12:50 AM (GMT)
I have to agree. It was a great ending. What ticks me off now is Ch 7 previews where they are still showing stuff of future episodes but which don't appear in the next week. Great way to ruin a lot of it.
Film Guru - May 26, 2004 01:41 AM (GMT)
Alias just keep powering along! :D
One of my favourite bits was simply when Sydney saw the box and it had "Irina" engraved on it. I was jumping up and down with excitement (yeah, I get involved in my TV shows :P ). The whole episode was just fantastic, I can't narrow it down at all.
10/10 :)
~DC - May 26, 2004 07:20 AM (GMT)
CLL - June 2, 2004 01:31 AM (GMT)
Well, I didn't see Lauren's mother being part of the Covenant, until just moments before she entered the room and shot her husband. Nice twist that was. The rest of the episode was pretty good and moved along at brisk pace thanks to the action.
Although I think they (especially Jack) were too easily duped by the story concocted to cover Lauren's whereabouts. You'd think that Jack, having been screwed over himself by Irena would be a bit more suspicious.
Otherwise, 8/10
Film Guru - June 15, 2004 12:37 PM (GMT)
This show seriously has the most complex plot in the history of television. Just needed to say that. :P
This whole sister deal was a fantastic twist, and totally plausable, which is what really matters. But oddly enough the whole "Sydney's Sister" thing wasn't the highlight of the episode. It was the return to temple in Nepal and the whole revelation of what Sloane saw on that scroll in Season 2. While it seems to have wound down from the catastrophic event they all said it was, I know there's more to it than the sister. There's always more to the plot than it seems. Unlike 24, it's hard to sum up thoughts on an episode of Alias, as so much happens to put it into a simple post.
Basically, seeing "Bill" again after so long was cool, and the way he casually kicked Sark around like a puppet. Heh heh. :P
I guess I'm just a huge fan of revisiting old locations. A good episode, but as usual, just one piece of a gargantuan puzzle. :)
CLL - June 15, 2004 11:49 PM (GMT)
I have to agree with everything said above. Sydney having a sister - I didn't see that one coming. But it was good that they tied in Sloane's previous visit to Nepal. And how "Bill" :P handled Sark so easily was quite funny.
This episode of Alias just goes to show how convoluted the plot is, that for a casual watcher who just happens to tune in, would never understand what the hell is going on.
Sir_Tam - June 17, 2004 11:55 AM (GMT)
Alias is soo bloody awesome. Almost every episode has been great this season and is far better than the reppitetive season 3 of 24. When Vaughn found out about Lauren it was awesome. I had been waiting for it for so long.
The fact that she has a sister is quite strange but it's not unbelievable. I can't wait to find out about her. I hope she is really evil and good friends with her Mother  But noooo! I will be out of the country for a month and will not get to see the season finale or anything untill I get back :( But on the otherhand....I'm going to France!! :D
Übermensch - June 17, 2004 01:53 PM (GMT)
I'm in the exact same situation, Sir_Tam, except I'm going to Turkey. Well, maybe... we're on a waiting list. When you take into account both 24 and Alias season finales coming up, I don't know whether to be sad or excited. :P
Film Guru - June 17, 2004 11:46 PM (GMT)
Man, three of the best shows on TV (Alias, 24 and Angel) are all ending soon. How am I gonna survive!
And unlike 24, we all know Alias Season 3 is gonna end on a huge cliffhanger. Ah crap... :P
Übermensch - June 22, 2004 01:54 AM (GMT)
Go here if you love Alias' soundtrack.I downloaded samples of this soundtrack and now I am desperate to buy it. Amazing stuff. And I didn't know that Michael Giacchino was also the composer for games like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty.
Hopefully, I'll find this at Borders when I go next week. And hopefully I'll have enough money for both season 1 & 2.
Oh, and he's also been signed on to compose the music for Pixar's new film, The Incredibles. :D
Film Guru - June 22, 2004 02:51 AM (GMT)
Woah, not bad at all! I might just buy those. :)
I love "Oh My God", as it is painfully obvious as to when they would play that music. Clearly a goodie has a revelation, followed by a chasing down of the threat.
Nice find Uber.
Übermensch - June 22, 2004 04:28 AM (GMT)
My favourite tracks:
Season 1
Bristow and Bristow
Page 47
Arvin at the Polls
Not the CIA
Home Movies
Blow'd Up
Oh My God
Test Results
Vaughn
Season 2
Mother of a Mother
Rabat
Going Down? (very Bond-like :D)
Sydney Implores Dixon
The Kiss
Sarkavator
On the Run
Something Fishy
Sloane Snoops
Balboa and Clubber
Almost Two Years
That's almost all of them! :D There's just something so surreal with this soundtrack... I mean, I'm addicted to thirty second samples here!
I'm sure this'll go down as one of my absolute favourite soundtracks, both because I'm a fan of the show (which affects my taste, naturally) and because it just sounds so bloody good. I've got almost twenty soundtracks now and those that enter my ever-so critical absolute favourites are:
X2: X-Men United
The Bourne Identity
Kill Bill Volume 1
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Halo: Combat Evolved
And now, inevitably, this. I can't wait till I get my hands on it... if I get my hands on it... *an inferno of obsessive emotions build up inside Uber and his eyes flash crazily*
Film Guru - June 22, 2004 12:35 PM (GMT)
Wow, really good episode. Alias is simply stunning in it's complexity. It was great to finally meet and understand more about Sydeny's sister...and Sloane's daughter. It was cool how suddenly you realised she was faking her illness and she kicked ass. Interesting plot developments too. Sydney and her sister will duel and neither will survive, that's a huge story point addition. So at some point one of them will become the enemy of the other, but why and how? I can't wait to find out.
Also, Sloane, finally united with his long lost daughter, still had the motivation of serving Rambaldi at heart. He betrayed the others and took her off to find out the message she contained himself. But the real question is...has Sloane really changed? I believe he is a little nicer, but his decisions are insane and make it impossible to determine who's side he's on. While I was 99% convinced he had truely changed in the last few episodes, I'm back on the border line. 10/10 episode, awesome stuff.
What do you guys think? What is Sloane's deal?
thebigm - June 23, 2004 07:37 AM (GMT)
Indeed it was an excellent episode, the battle between Sydney and her sister is going to be awesome, can't wait to see it. Although it will open up the plot a lot as FG said.
Übermensch - June 23, 2004 07:55 AM (GMT)
I don't think Sloane's changed at all. I don't trust him, him and his beady eyes! THE EYES, CHILDREN, THE EYES!
Awesome episode but I'm beginning to see the major flaw of this season which'll stop it from getting the 10/10 from me (luckily, JJ Abrams is also aware of this flaw and he's determined to fix it for season 4, according to an article at Dark Horizons). This flaw is basically that we don't see the characters do much of anything extra-curricular or any of their other interests. In season 1 and 2, we saw all the characters do something that reveals their personality which doesn't involve talking or beating the crap out of someone. For example, Sydney used to enjoy herself once upon a time with her non-CIA friends (who're now gone). For season 4, I'd like to see more of that again, because it's exactly why I love the characters. It isn't exactly a big problem for me but I can see why it would be virtually impossible to get into the show from season 3. Season 1 and 2 were masterfully done in this respect and it's exactly why I slipped into the show within 3 episodes from the 2nd episode of the 2nd season.

My thoughts are a bit late (had exams, but now finished :)), most of you have said what I wanted to say, but it was a good episode with so many twists and turns (more than a usual Alias episode I thought). The problem is that after watching Alias for so long, you suspect everyone and everything, so when Lauren "helped" Vaughn escaped, immediately I was thinking setup. Sloane's betrayal of Sydney and Jack was a nice twist though, and it'll be interesting to find out what Rambaldi's Endgame is.

The question is, are Sloane's and Rambaldi's Endgame different, or very much the same? After all, Sloane's finding out about his daughter was the equivilant of Heroshima according to good old Milo, so the fact that he wants to escape with her is a huge deal.
Übermensch - June 25, 2004 11:28 AM (GMT)
Hey, I just realised now, silly of me, but we've just seen what Irena meant earlier in the season. She said two things:
1. To Sloane: "Back off Irena." (Not to be confused with "Back off, Irena." :P)
2. To Jack: something along the lines of, "you'll come to understand why she (Irena) did what she did soon," after Jack was told to kill Sloane by Irena (through her sister).
Answers to both:
1. Obviously, Irena was very much aware of Sloane searching for her, probably thinking his search would lead to his daughter.
2. What Sloane really wanted his daughter for was not what he told Sydney and Jack, as we've seen. However, this point may not be that elusive event Irena mentioned. We've still got two episodes left for something possibly bigger.

I have some bad news. I used to be an avid Alias fan, but since the start of this season and the fact that Seven has stuffed around with the programming, I've stopped watching :(

Actually, they never changed the time slot, they just put it one two times a week for one week. But that's sad to hear, you've been missing out on one hell of a season! :(
Film Guru - June 29, 2004 12:41 PM (GMT)
Woah, whadda good episode! The best part about it was the whole confrontation with Slaone, Sark, Lauren and "The Passenger". It combined my three favourite things in TV, and that is confrontations, twists and Japanese architecture. :D
Now, I must say I am totally convinced Sloane is not the same man we knew in Season 1 and most of Season 2. I honestly believe the very second he read that scroll in Season 2 he began to change. Whilst he is still grounded in his obssession with Rambaldi, he is no longer willing to sacrifice anything to get to his goal. He actually cares for his daughter, even though he must hurt her to get the information he needs.
And I loved how they explained how the liquid made her write Rambaldi's message. It sounded very science-fiction, but at the same time totally plausable (to me, at least). And they brought the guy from the very first episode of Alias back! I literally cheered when they spotted him!
10/10 episode, and the next episode is gonna be the best episode of anything on TV this year. Alias is well known for killer twists and mind-blowing Season Finales (even though there have only been 2 so far :P), but word has it from America this Season's finale is even better than the last two. I can't wait! Whoo hoo!
Übermensch - June 29, 2004 02:39 PM (GMT)
Ep. 21: Legacy
I would normally classify this as a filler episode and as such it would not receive the highest score from me. Although it still won't, this isn't exactly filler material. It laid the groundwork for the season final, yes, but it also had its own twists, thankfully. And it was exciting.
9/10
!!!SPOILER ALERT FOR NON-NSW INHABITANTS!!!
Ep. 22: Resurrection
Now this was much better. One of the great things about this show is that the characters' actions are plausible 99% of the time within their disposition (the only time I ever thought otherwise was when Jack took Lauren's allibi regarding her father's death with near-certainty that it was the truth). The last moments of this episode continue to prove this point. I mean, Jack loves Sydney, no doubt, but I can't exactly put whatever it is he's been hiding past him. The great thing about Jack is that you usually can't read what he's thinking or feeling. He's as hard as a rock and his facial expressions are almost as flexible. So this new revelation (whatever the hell it is) is very startling, but not quite unexpected.
Oh, and the bitch died! YEAH! DIE, BITCH, DIE! THAT'S HOW I LIKE IT! *Does a power thrust for the first time in his life*
However, I must say that the show has been missing something lately (I think it's what I said it was earlier, about the characters not doing everyday things, the kind of things that help us connect with them).
9/10

Btw, thanks for ruining it.

The season finale was boring. It didn't do anything for me.
Oh and it wasn't just NSW that got the double QLD got it as well.
