PALGN says: Yesterday we reported that there was a rumour making its way around the internet that Chrono Trigger was going to be revived, based on some Famitsu scans and a rather vague countdown clock on the Square Enix site. It's a rumour no longer - Square Enix has today confirmed that the SNES classic will be making its way onto the Nintendo DS.

It won't just be a straight port, either. The game will attempt to take advantage of the handheld's dual displays and touchscreen, along with an extra dungeon to explore.

However, the US release date is currently pencilled in for the holidays later this year, with no mention of a PAL release as of yet.

Expect the mysterious timer site to become a whole lot more informative during E3, when the countdown expires and Chrono Trigger DS is presumably officially revealed.

This will be one hot import! A couple of months ago I was considering selling my DS but with FFIV remake & now this around the corner shows that the DS still has enough solid titles to keep it afloat

I played this on Snes a few years back and was thoroughly entertained throughout, its on par with - dare I say it - Final Fantasy VII

I do not doubt the DS's power or quality, but remaking this game for the DS is like remaking The Godfather but using B-list actors, second-rate musical composers, and (for the sake of argument) the weakest special effects team around.

There is absolutely NO justice you can do to the game with such a half-arsed attempt. :(

You mean because they won't be remaking it ala FF3/4 DS? I suppose going by the screenshots from the scanned image its a bit of a letdown since it looks exactly like the Snes version with subtle tweaks but for anyone that missed out on its original release (which didn't last long at all) its a great way to start. Alas I suppose its not the game we were hoping for in a sense

Secret of Mana would look awesome utilising the 3D capabilities

I enjoyed Secret of Mana more for some reason, i'll probably cop some flak over that but the story was just more compelling.

I started playing Chrono Trigger on a SNES emulator 2 or 3 times but always got distracted by something. It should be good to have a chance to play through the original properly. I can see why one might be disappointed if they'd played through it before, though...

I can relate to that, Secret of Mana was a brilliant game (plus I actually got to play it on Snes). Secret of Mana 2 was disappointing, didn't have the same charm as the first and I ended up getting bored after a while

Anyway the Chrono Trigger DS trailer is out now - doesn't look like the graphics have even been touched which is pretty cheap. A rom with touchscreen capabilities? Hopefully it'll play out better

Hmm, having watched the trailer, I'm a little bit disappointed that this does appear to be a straight port, even after having said that I'll probably play it anyway since I haven't played it before.

I really would have liked to see Square Enix go to town with this, considering how epic Chrono Trigger once was. That midi score sounds horribly dated and I would have loved to see a similar graphical update as FFIII with the 3D and whatnot.

Looks like this one's mostly going to appeal to people who didn't get to play it on the SNES...
