Title: What's your dream job?

dave_cool31 - March 30, 2008 11:15 AM (GMT)
My dream job at the moment is freelance photographer - I'm thinking seriously of spending a grand on a six month photography course and saving up for a DSLR camera. I don't know if there's much money in photography, but there's a lot of different potential avenues - stock photography, for example. Also, all the photos in magazines and such have to be taken by someone... Even if I wasn't able to make much money from it, I think I'd still like to do that course and save up for a DSLR just because I love photography so much.

I've been thinking about jobs lately because I'm very much over working at Coles, but I need something part time at the moment, so it kind of limits my job choices... I might be getting a part time job at a Vodafone store soon, which would be a nice change from Coles...

My other potential dream job would be something to do with Science, probably a Chemist, or a Nuclear Physicist - that would be awesome.

Anyway, what's your dream job? Do you ever think you'll be able to get that job?

Musician baby.

dave_cool31 - March 30, 2008 12:05 PM (GMT)
ooh, any specific instrument, Ink?

Inquisitor - March 30, 2008 12:06 PM (GMT)
Yeah, drums. I've been playing for eight years.

dave_cool31 - March 30, 2008 12:24 PM (GMT)
sweet - my bro plays the drums. Do you reckon you'll ever be able to make money from it?

Anyway, I gotta sleep now, so I'll read replies tomorrow!

Heh, I wouldn't mind being a musician.
I just love music :P

But then I'd actually have to get good at playing, which is currently a work in progress.

Gah, I've got so many ambitions it's not funny.

I'd like to do something in multimedia. If all goes to plan, I want to end up either in Hollywood writing movie scripts or doing game design. I wouldn't mind being a presenter as well; that's always looked really fun. Pipe-dreams for now, but who knows, they both might end up a reality.

If I was good at maths, I'd probably do something in astrophysics, cosmology or astronomy. But I'm not though, so that really is a pipe-dream. :P

Anything to do with movie/tv/game script writing and/or creation would be pretty cool. So would being a guitarist.

But yeah...we'll see. One day...:P

22 million a year to drive sigged car would be nice...

I'm on my way to becoming a director, so here's hoping.

NismoR34 - March 31, 2008 03:54 PM (GMT)
Surprising absolutely no one, my dream job would be racing cars for a living.

Will it happen? Probably not now, no.

Yeah, I do. Just a matter of time, my friend. :)

sweet! I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to do this course, because it is a lot of money for me at the moment ($999) and I still have to buy a car and then save for a DSLR... I really think that I want to do it, though, but I don't really know if/how much I could get paid in photography, so it's hard for me to evaluate how much a course like that is worth now, a bit of a catch 22, I suppose. However, I would love to do the course, anyway, even if it didn't lead to work, but it's still quite expensive, especially considering how much I'm getting paid right now...

Yeah man, you should certainly do some research before you jump right into it. $1000 is a lot to fritter on a course that might not even pay for itself in the long term. My uncle has a little photography studio in his house; I know from him that work is pretty much hit and miss. It's all about how versatile you are, how much you advertise and how your prices fare in comparison to everyone else's. And there are a lot of photographers. But either way, good luck dude! :D

and how good your photographs are ;)

So anyway, I'm going to save for a DSLR before I consider doing a course - it may just end up as a hobby, but I want to get more into it at least - As far as I can tell I'm going to have to spend quite a lot of money on accessories like lenses and flashes and things after I buy my SLR, too, but one of the benefits of living at home is that I can spend money on stuff like that without having to worry about not being able to afford to eat :D

Anyway, so after I get a DSLR I'll probably start considering courses again - I'm also considering doing a part time uni course (probably Bachelor of Science) because I had ruled out uni because of the full-time-ness, but I was thinking when I was at work the other day about how Coles is so mind-numbing and how I miss school, especially Science, and then it occured to me that I might be able to do a uni course part time and still do all my other stuff, so I might be able to do that for six years while still doing the other important stuff that I've got going on and end up in my other dream job, while still pursuing photography as an awesome hobby... Not sure, but it's something I'm considering.

I figure I probably won't want to depend on photography becoming my main source of income, so by doing something like that I could probably still pursue photography from a semi-professional standpoint as possibly a bit of side-income (selling stock photography, etc.). But anyway, that's what I'm thinking about at the moment.

Too many options for me. Game designer is my #1 job right now, but if not, I'd like to write comic books. I want to be the next Alan Moore. And if those don't work out, I'll settle for being a model or a fashion designer. Or a straight-up author.

A chef.

If only I realised this before I chose to dive headfirst into the IT industry. Might become something on the side.

Why not catch a bus or something for another year and follow your dream?

Personally i've always wanted to be involved in game design one way or another, pretty common dream job these days, it would be such a blast if you got in with the right people/development team.

dave_cool31 - April 8, 2008 08:12 AM (GMT)
that might be a good idea, I'm trying to save for two things at once at the moment... I think I'll probably just wait six months or so before I buy a DSLR - I have around $2200 in my everyday account/car fund and around $200 in my netbank saver/camera fund, which I've started putting $50/wk into a month ago - I'm thinking that after I buy a car or after I have sufficient money to buy a car I'll probably start putting $100/wk into the saver account and then in six months I'll have ~$2500 to buy a sweet camera + lens + flashes, etc.
