Description: Colonize???

What do you think about mars do you think they will be colonies there within the next 50 years?

Slim to none. I wouldn't expect anything like this until the end of the century; if that.

Neither would I. We haven't even touched down on the planet yet, so colonising within 50 years seems a little too hopeful. Not impossible though, but highly improbable. I can't see a manned mission to Mars happening until the 2030s...sucks...I'll be 40-something. :P

One has to remember that man has not set foot on the Moon since 1972. That's 32 years! Until recently, with the prospect of mining and the notion of an established base (NASA claim that they will have established a permanent facility on the Moon by 2020, and they'll get there...if they have the right amount of funding), no one's taken the idea of extraterrestrial colonisation seriously. However, lunar colonisation could be the answer to many of our problems, albeit a costly answer.

Extraction of resources on Earth would be lessened significantly through exploitation of mineral deposits on the Moon; equally, a settled colony could take massive pressure over an already bulging mother planet. We're talking an increase of several billion people in the next 20-30 years, and that could be far too much strain than we can handle. Plus, in my opinion, it just makes sense. We belong to such an immense galaxy, it should be part of our inherent sense of adventure to explore it all, like Columbus and Cook. Ahh, trust me, if I was good with figures, I'd train to be an astronaut like a shot.

So, back to the original thread idea; a colony on Mars within 50 years is a little to fanciful to be reality. A plausible one in the 2100s, but not something I can really see happening this century. Shame. :(

I'd say that ecological catastrophe will overtake the Earth within a century, thereby forcing us to look elsewhere for something to pollute.

We should colonize Antarctica first; that will give us good practice with inhospitable environments and closed systems.

I don't think it will happen any time soon.

I'd like it to though. Based on the progress made on space travel in the 60's, people (ie TV shows) were expecting us to be living on moon bases by 2000 (along with flying cars etc) but we just had to slow right down on that... :(

I'll probably see us touch down on Mars during my lifetime but sadly I think I'll miss out on regular trips to other planets. Stupid being born in the 20th century...

Wow maybe we should have a univierse section ehh i can see many are intreted int his topic i cant blame you i think about this stuff all the time....

the moon base i have yet to hear about that that makes me exited i wish i wasnt born until like 2500 cause then thered probably be dang cars that you could fly out of the soalr system in about a few months maybe but i dout that it'd be cool though =D
