Title: Poll of the Week 26
Machiavelli - March 7, 2008 02:49 AM (GMT)
I stumbled across
this today which inspired this weeks poll.

'Definitely movies, there hasn't been a good one yet' receives my vote this week. It’s pretty much impossible to think of a single good film, the majority of them are average at best. Producers, give it up already! I mean I've always adored movies and video games, but combined It's a bit like "Nuts & Gum", interesting but not enjoyable.
And although many games based on movies just plain suck. There were a few that got through development pretty decently. Sometimes these franchises were handled by good programmers. My pick for best movie based video game would have to be Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Xbox, PC)
As far as I'm concerned, the definitive game that breaks the stigma of horrible movie licensed videogames. Even with the minor issues it is still better than almost all of the other lackluster movie licensed games on the market. In fact, it is better than a lot of the other unpolished games on the market period. Riddick is a great even if you don't like the character or movie altogether. Buy this game if you can still find it..
Other honorable mentions:
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (GCN)
GoldenEye (N64)
Aladdin (MD)
Jurassic Park (SNES)
Lion King (SNES)
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (PC)
Also, feel free to name other movie games you'd like to see and/or ones you'd like to see stricken from the records of video game history! :P

I think movies based on games are much worse than games based on movies.
As you said, there are quite a few well adapted movie themed gaes, but there are but a handful of good films based on films.
There is the Resident Evil series, while completely sacrificing the story of the games (fail) is still a good mindless zombie flick.

Movies based on games are much worse. I have to say wing Commander was the Biggest let down for me by far. Mario was entertaining.... though not great... Street fighter was very humorous and somewhat entertaining. I have watched Wing Commander twice now .... some how ... trying to find some redeeming quality in it what so ever and well there isn't. I was so overwhelmingly disappointed in it cause the games were f'ing amazing and fun to play and the movie destroyed it.

Video games, although the occasional movie game is good.
Simply because of all the crap animated movie games.

I might have to run against the flow here, but I think the resident evil series is pretty good. I haven't seen extinction yet, but I would happily watch them all again.
If you think that all these movies are crap, then don't go and see them. Save your $14 and your bucket of popcorn for another day.
Having said that I have seen some stinkers, but even on some level I enjoyed them a little. Some notable suggestions for worst movie/game would be.
Super Mario Brothers Movie
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2
Street Fighter
DOA: (sexy yet humorous)

I think that most games based on movies suck...

Movies based on games for sure, the only ones that are somewhat decent are the Resident Evil movies, but they have nothing to do with the games anyway, and so still fail.
Games based on movies on the other hand, while many are shit, there are some gems, like Goldeneye.

As a side note, Chronicles of Riddick is getting a next generation (that is to say, this generation) reworking under some name with Athena or something. Definatly worth a buy.

I voted for 'Video games, although the occasional movie game is good'
Although thinking about it now, they're both as equally bad really but there are piles upon piles of absolute garbage videogame translations. Aside from Goldeneye I haven't touched any aside from a couple that Mach has listed but even those aren't exactly "must-haves" imo. DOA movie was surprisingly good fun, like Mortal Kombat but with added hot babes in bikinis playing volleyball :P
Resident Evil Degeneration CG movie trailer is looking good :)

Generally i think when they try to turn games into films it doesn't work! most of them are a flop! theres only a small percentage of these films that have been half decent and where ive had slight enjoyment from watching! but the majority of the films are never accurate enough to the story lines in games.......so i think they should leave them well alone

I enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay a lot. It's cool to shank someone in First Person. One of the few times that the video game is actually better than the movie. I would go as far as to say that Escape from Butcher bay is one of my favourite shooters.
