Title: Driving
Robert - February 7, 2008 11:41 AM (GMT)
I just got my license a few days ago, and I went out driving today. It was a rush. It's a bit scary, but it's something that you have to adapt to. I may be going out again tomorrow, it's rather exciting.
So, when did you get your license, what car do you drive, have you ever been in an accident?
Ninja Catfish - February 7, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
Got my license a little over a year ago. First car was a 1996 Ford Falcon.
It was also lowered and had Ford mag wheels.
It was a bit of a 'hoon' car apparently. I never drove stupidly though.
Only stupid thing I did with it was discovering how fucking much it slides, unintentionally, on a gravel road.
I thought, 'lol, i'll kick up some dust for phun' completely lost control, and came *this* close to hitting one of the barriers on the side of the river.
Got rid of it because clutch died on me in the middle of mandurah, and after that got fixed, had a problem with the gearbox where it refused to goo into gear... right in the middle of an intersection <_<
It worked straight after, but I did'nt wanna risk it.
Traded it in for a 2000 model Mitsubishi Lancer VR-X,w hcih is doing me well.
Better fuel economy, and I didn't need 6 cylinder power really.
It gets me where I need to go, and yeah, is sporty enough looking.
Inquisitor - February 7, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
Got my license back in August.
It was during school, so after I passed the test (100%. No errors), I got my driving instructor to drop me off at my home, where 5 minutes later I drove myself to school.
Never been scared of driving - I love it.
I drive a '91 Camry. Automatic (although I do have my manual license). Got it for free from my sister when she bought a new car. Has a few problems. Low brake fluid, one brake light not working, car will stall if the aircon is on and car is standing still (no revs), the different wind passages in the car are leaky - so even when I've got it on 'face' mode, it still blows air through the windscreen one, so at night I often get fog patches popping up...
NEVER had an accident. Never run into someone or something. Never had anyone run into me. Closest I've come to an accident is running over a curb.
Resident-Seven - February 7, 2008 08:59 PM (GMT)
I got mine in October, and I drive my '98 VT Commodore, which I love. Never had an accident either, and I refuse to drive in Sydney because I don't want to change that.
Decman - February 7, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
*sigh* I'm quite jealous. I haven't got mine yet; hell, I haven't even sat my theory test, but even when I get that out the way, I'll still have to have someone with me when I drive.
Zebu - February 7, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
I got my licence in 2003 and I've had a pretty flawless record driving in that time, although since I've moved to Sydney I haven't driven because I don't have a car (not that I'd really want one with the traffic in this city).
The first time I had the licence renewed the DPI (government branch that handles licences in WA) dicked around and I never got the new one sent out, so for the second year of my licence I drove around with an expired one >_>
Admittedly pretty risky considering I was working as a pizza driver at the time but I never got pulled over.
Stevorooni - February 7, 2008 10:55 PM (GMT)
Got my license back in 1998. First car was a 1976 Toyota Corolla, followed by a 1984 Toyota Corona, followed by a 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Coupe which I still have and is currently being serviced.
Driving by yourself for the first time is a little bit scary but it soon becomes second nature. I also had the problem of learning to drive in the country where there's not that much traffic, then I moved into the city and was surrounded by cars which freaked me out for a little while.
I don't drive very often now though, I catch public transport to work and most things I need are around the corner from my house so I really only drive on weekends when I have to go places.

Translation: I've only had one infraction. Which was driving a school bus. That I stole. Off a bridge. On fire.

I got my licence at the end of August last year, so I've been driving for nearly 6 months. I drive a 2007 VW Golf, which is pretty damn awesome. Sadly I won't able to drive for about 11 months because I'm going to Germany and I'm not allowed to drive then. And in that time my sister will be learning to drive in the Golf! :(
EDIT: Ooh, 1000th post!

If you stole it off a bridge that was on fire, then surely the owners should just be happy that you saved their bus... :P
I got my license a couple of years ago, I drive an 02 Magna exec and I've never been in an accident as a driver. Haven't been in trouble. I was breath tested once, but luckily I'd just had a joint instead of a beer... :ph43r:

I got my licence years ago!
I drive a 96 BMW 323, manual of course!
I've never been in an accident, nor have I ever gotten any sort of fine or lost any points etc.
However I have slide my mum's Pajero, it was wet and the tyres were due for a change. Was actually quite a scary experience as 4WDs are just not meant to go sideways, even only slightly sideways like it did.
I've also given the Beamer a bit of slide action, though only in a controlled cul-de-sac near work.
In front of the neighbours place.

At work.

One thing I found remarkable since I was driving a manual 80% of the time, was how quickly the clutch felt like it was just an extension of your left foot.
Considering how awkward it is to use when you start learning.

I know. I find it weird driving an auto now, it feels like I don't have full control.

I actually only cut my leg once, the other time was my arm!
Also how did you hear about it? Didn't you quit Hyper?

I learned to drive on a manual, but ever since my second car I've used an automatic :P
I haven't driven a manual car for 9 years, I've probably forgotten how!
borgster101 - February 9, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
I got my licence in 2004, I'm on my full licence now, I didnt buy a car until just recently as I started full time work, I got a 2005 Toyota Corolla, there's a pic somewhere in the latest purchase thread :P
Yeah, first time driving by myself felt weird, like I was doing something wrong  But you get used to it, and for me driving has been merely a means to get around.
samiboi - February 9, 2008 01:47 PM (GMT)
I got my L's on the 7th of January! :D But I haven't driven much... at all :( going to tomorrow though :D
Resident-Seven - February 10, 2008 02:12 AM (GMT)
I did pretty much no driving in the first 2 months of having my Ls, but still managed to get my Ps first go after 7 months.
Random Hero - February 12, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
Started on my P's early last month, got a really old falcon sports model, gotta be from the 80's. Never crashed and to be honest I hate driving, it's such a chore and I have to spend sooo much money on damn petrol and car maintenance. Sometimes I think a bus might be a better option.
OldSkOoL - February 12, 2008 03:30 AM (GMT)
I got my L's late, when I was 18 or 19. I'm still only on my Green Ps but never put them on and I think I can go for my full license in June.
I have never been in an accident but have had a few wet weather swerves which was heart in mouth stuff!
I drive either My Nimbus or my dads Mazda van (V6*).
* I know nothing about cars but this is good, yes?

Dude, you have a gigantic Falcon!
If you had a Corolla it would not only be more fuel efficient, but it would not be such a chore to drive either.
dave_cool31 - February 12, 2008 11:47 AM (GMT)
I got my P's in May 07, but I don't have a car yet (am saving). I drive my dad's car sometimes, though...
Resident-Seven - February 12, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
It's a chore because it's a ford, get a Holden.
Oldskool, that ain't late, I didn't get my L's till I was 21, and P's about a week after my 22 bday.
NismoR34 - February 12, 2008 05:57 PM (GMT)
I'm still on my Ps but this is the last year, before it becomes a full license. I could have gotten off it ages ago if I wanted to, because there is a course here in Canberra that you can do to get off them quicker, but as I wasn't really driving much I didn't see the point. It's not like I show the plates anyway.
Don't have a car as of yet as I don't really need one, so that means I usually drive mum's Lantra around. Or Rachael's VT Commodore.
Or mum's friend's Monaro. Or Rose's Civic.
Choices, they're nice to have. ;)
Oh and no accidents yet either. Some close calls though, Canberra drivers are absolute dickheads. When I was learning to drive (officially I mean - I've know how to since I was about 12), I had to deal with 3 different occasions of people coming down the road the wrong way.

I don't regret getting them late. I'm a safer more mature driver, then again it might be the shit I'm actually driving.

Speaking of bad Canberra drivers, my cousin lives down there. He has a S13 Onevia, white and it looks terrible! Also he's a bad driver so he's not hard to miss.
NismoR34 - February 13, 2008 05:17 PM (GMT)
He probably lives on the south side with the other 4 residents of this shitty city.
I'm all alone out here in the North side. :(
Andy - February 13, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
Living out in the country meant that obtaining your license was a sign of your awesome. Living out in a forest, my old man taught me in a manual from the age of 13. It helped that my older brother had his L's and sucked at driving, which meant that Dad said, "I want you to know fundamentals before you even get near a main road!"
First car was a 1991 Laser S. 1.8L. FWD. Was in one accident when an inattentive woman ploughed into the back of me when I was at the lights.
Had a Laser TX3 for a bit before selling it prior to my trip to Japan a couple years ago. Had a Mazda Astina before that (bought with then partner).
Now driving girlfriend's Festiva. I maintain that driving a slow car quick and immensely more enjoyable than driving a fast car slow (and arguably almost as enjoyable as driving a fast car fast).
Tony Takitani - February 28, 2008 05:58 AM (GMT)
I got my Learners when I was 21 (!) and I can go for my green Ps in another three months.
I don't like paying for petrol all the time so I try to keep driving to a minimum. To and from work, maybe to pick up some food...that's about it.
µacron - March 1, 2008 04:30 PM (GMT)

 That would've been funny to witness (as long as I wasn't in the vicinity). My friend drove another friend's car into a ditch full of water whilst doing a similar thing on a gravel of road. 3 guys were in the car and they all got soaked (and bruised)
I still don't drive, will attempt to this year (maybe)
Lordage - March 28, 2008 01:16 AM (GMT)
I got my license in late 2002 or early 2003 (I cant remember which).
Yeah I've not had an accident per-se... Although I did run into a letterbox once... Never bothered fixing the ding. :P
Oh I drive a 97 TE Magna... *cue manic laughter*
