Title: Stuff I'd like to buy, but can't justify it thread
Description: 'cause it's too expensive for what it is

dave_cool31 - January 23, 2008 10:24 AM (GMT)
So I was just thinking about how I need to clean up my room and how I'm probably going to re-arrange it and wondering where I'm going to put my floor lamp, and was then thinking that I could get a desk lamp instead. Then I remembered seeing this lamp a while ago:

The Mathmos Airswitch TC. You turn it on by waving your hand over it and you dim and brighten it by moving your hand up and down above it. I'm totally in love with the concept, but not so much in love with the price - $180AUD. If I was in the UK I could buy it for 50GBP, or about $110AUD, which seems reasonable, but their UK shop doesn't ship to Australia and the only Australian distributors decide to charge $70 more than it should be. Even though postage would be probably at least $30 from UK, $180 still seems like too much to pay... I have enough money to buy it, but it seems too expensive to be justifiable.

Another thing that I'm considering buying is this Stainless Steel wallet:

My current wallet's cheap and nasty and is starting to fall apart, and this one's made of stainless steel, but it costs $80US from thinkgeek and then about $20US for postage, which is adds up to quite a bit to spend on a wallet. If my current wallet breaks, I'd also consider buying a JFold wallet, but they're also about $90AUD. Why are things so expensive?

The final thing that I've been considering buying, but can't really justify it right now is this:

Even though my dad said he'd go halves with me, I just don't feel like I can justify it right now since I should be saving for a car and also will probably need to buy a wallet soon :P

So is there anything that you're considering/would like to buy, but can't justify it? Post it here!

Ninja Catfish - January 23, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
I'd recommend those speakers, but yeah, wouldn't put them above a car or anything.

I'm currently wanting to get a bigger TV, but I only recently bought one, and yeah, don't think I exactly have the spare cash lying around <_<

Wouldn't mind a PS3, but can't justify it when I have mounds of GCN/PC/Wii/DS/PSP/PSX etc games waiting to be played/finished.

dave_cool31 - January 23, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
I just found a site that has the Airswitch for $157.96 including postage, but it still seems like a lot to pay for a light... I will consider, because it is an awesome light.

Very tempted to trade in my current computer for it so I can save on space and get rid of my computer desk + pedestal. I'm trying to keep everything minimal atm

NismoR34 - January 23, 2008 07:04 PM (GMT)
I'd have to say a PS3 for me at the moment. I want one, will be getting one eventually but at the moment there is just nothing that really justifies the purchase for me.

Stevorooni - January 24, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
Screw justification, just buy all that stuff! :P

Actually I have a rule where all incoming money is cut in two.
Half goes into a savings and the other half is mine to do as I please!... and pay bills, living expenses etc.

But the point is if you don't waste money on small shit, whatever is left of the 'spendings' builds up so I can buy expensive shit with it and not feel guilty because I've been saving half my pay all this time.

That's how I bought my new TV (plus by selling some stuff) without dipping into my house savings. GUILT FREE
Actually I feel a little guilty over it, but I do with any expensive purchase.

More on topic:

I'd really like a brand new hardcore laptop but I don't really need one because I don't use my current one all that often. Even though it doesn't have a lot of grunt it's still good enough for what I need it for.

FreakTrigger - January 24, 2008 05:21 AM (GMT)
I don't... really want or need much of anything - Nothing gamewise is eating me up, I don't want or need a TV, my stereo is fine, my car is powerfully non-descript, but reliable and comfortable.

I generally find books, movies and nights out eat into my disposable cash pretty heavily, but nothing to lament.

It's a source of frustration that any good tattoo artist's time is frighteningly expensive (and rightfully so), but I don't really feel the urge for any consumer items that I can't fulfill :)

Actually... yeah, I would like this: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/17/lumenla...0000-price-tag/

I am aching to return to japan, but the money I have is being put aside for other small things like food, water and renovations to property.

Damn desire to improve my abode.

LOOK AT THAT BAD BOY. No bids on it yet, bidding is done in 19 hours. God I want it D:

A bullet belt. With real (not live, obviously) bullets. The problem is they're really expensive if you want a good, non-poser kind of belt.

I'm a drummer for those who didn't know, and drumming is the most expensive instrument unfortunately. :( There's SO MUCH stuff you can buy, but it's all so damn pricey. Example: a good, high-end cymbal will cost about $400 - $500AU. That's ONE cymbal.

Anywho, here's what I want to get at the moment, but can't find the money for:

That's about $400.

Same here. This time last year 40" lcd's where $1000 more expensive, at the rate they're dropping it just isn't worth upgrading right now imo.

FreakTrigger - January 25, 2008 02:06 AM (GMT)
It's true, a decent drumkit costs one of each of the arms and legs you need to play it.

While I was in high school one of my friends had a win of almost $6,000 on a poker machine; following weekend, cheque cleared, went down to Billy Hyde's in sydney and blew $5,500 on a drumkit.

We then had to get that back from central on the train. Not fun.

another thing that I'd like to buy is a Moleskine Pocket ruled notebook to get myself organised, but it seems a little bit silly to spend $22 on a notebook when I could buy one for like $5. I'll probably end up getting a Moleskine one, anyway, because it's still only $22...

You caught me while listening through Iron Maiden Live at Donington.

Holy crap that's crazy... except I'm not a girl or anything <_<

But if I was I'd totally buy it.

dave_cool31 - January 25, 2008 09:39 AM (GMT)
I think I might actually buy this wallet. It's $67.50 on special. Although I could get 15% off the non-special stuff anyway with a discount coupon code, so I'd only really be saving $9, but I still might buy it... user posted image

OMG! This laptop is now only $1599 from an online website special. I had to send them an email because its a non-stocked item. Think I'm going to go for it...

You really need to steal money or something and buy that Angra, like seriously.

Hell, I'd buy it for you if I could...

A new laptop... or new laptop charger... I found a charger on eBay, but it's $20 +$20 postage... Oh and I have no money and no job atm... just left school :P

Turns out my laptop order for $1599 (RRP $1899) was actually a typo - its actually a ASUS F8SV not a ASUS F8SA yet I think I'm still getting the F8SA. What's the difference? Well the V series has 2gb of ram but only a 160gb HDD and a Geforce 8600M whereas the A series has 1 gb but a 250gb HDD and a HD2600 videocard. Either way it still works out good

Yeah that's why I want to sell my current PC because if I keep both I doubt I'd be using the laptop more than the desktop. But at least if I had a laptop I could easily connect it up to my 32" LCD TV for whenever I feel like watching movies/anime fansubs & take it to LANs with ease with a weight of 2.5kg compared to my current 12kg case without anything in it!

Ninja Catfish - January 26, 2008 02:56 PM (GMT)
Problem is, though they might not say it directly, when you bring a laptop to a LAN, all the other attendees are silently shunning you.

SHUUUUUUN!

so I think I'm going to order this wallet, now
user posted image

Everything on rushfaster.com is 20% off until midnight on Monday - what a convenient excuse to buy something!

Also, I think I might just buy a cheap notebook, because if I bought an expensive moleskine one, I probably wouldn't want to scribble in it and would try to be neat all the time, which isn't me :P

I was looking for somewhere where I could buy a Miquelrius 200page notebook, but it seems that nowhere in Australia sells them, and it costs too much to get one posted from America... I might just go to the newsagent and try to find a nice A5 notebook with as many pages as possible...

Zebu - January 27, 2008 09:27 AM (GMT)
What's so special about that wallet?

And there's too many damn shows I want to buy but my income is too limited, I will be getting the Angel box-set soon though as I need that >_>

A Clubsport body kit for my VT Commodore, finished off with an Atomic (the new Holden Green) Metallic paint job.

A GPU for my pc, seeing as it's a Dell and has whatever the hell it came with. It plays AoE3, but damn is it ugly.

Not really anything in particular, but my current wallet is cheap and nasty and is also falling apart, so I figure I may as well buy that one now while it's on special. So I ordered it yesterday, hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week. Also, it's brightly coloured :woot:

A hamock.

I saw some while down in Melbourne. The only thing that stopped me from buying one was I couldn't think of anywhere to put it.

Plus I'm not sure just how viable my hamock based, dog drawn chariot would be.
