Title: Games that have aged terribly

What games did you love when they came out, but now find it hard to go back to?

Most early 3D games haven't aged very well, both in terms of crude graphics and slightly awkward gameplay. I went back to Fade to Black not so long ago and was quite disappointed at how appalling it looked after I had been incredibly impressed with it when it was first released.

The bulk of them are just plain horrid to look at and control just as bad. It's no surprise that many early playstation games aren't discussed anymore.

Games of the PS/N64 generation are certainly the ones that have aged the worst.

I think it's the primitive or lack of textures which result in them graphically aging badly more than anything.

The gameplay can be fantastic still, but it's hard not to look at solid coloured, garaud shaded polygons these days without feeling a shudder of disgust and mumbling "That's meant to be a person?"

Any retro games played on an LCD/Plasma age terribly unless its been remixed for HD like Stardust on the Amiga transferred to the PS3 store or Super Puzzle Fighter Remix for the X360

Mario Kart 64 is by far the worst culprit. I downloaded it onto the Wii, played 5 minutes then never touched it again.

I really wanted to play perfect dark .. missed out when it first came out.. so i bought a second hand copy and played it only once. Frame rate was the culprit.. to slow for my liking. I think resident evil games are still a joy to play thru as they don't depend on fast frame rates ..

Goldeneye on the N64... Seriously that looks really bad, I didn't notice until the other day me and my friend decided to play it.The framerate drops majorly when there's an explosion, the character models look stupid...

I agree that many 64 games have aged badly but I can't agree that Perfect Dark or Goldeneye have. I think they still play pretty well given their age though that may be my nostalgia talking. :P

I bought a secondhand copy of Body Harvest a few weeks ago having never played it before and found it to be terrible.

Link to the Past.

Great game when it was released but I remember coming back to it with the GBA release of the game and I really struggled to enjoy a couple of hours with it.

N64 games. As much as I liked playing them, the graphics were a bit too blurry for my liking and would sometimes give me headaches. I especially remember feeling nauseous during the underwater areas of Mario 64.

Harvest Moon 64.

I loved that game so much...I picked it up and played it again recently and...oh man. That was disappointing...

^ Luckily other versions of Harvest Moon still look and play awesomely. :D

And thet's why 16bit sprites never age!
They still look good today whereas primitve 3D games look terrible!

the framerate in Rare shooters like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark is just brutal. I think I got an aneurysm just trying to play splitscreen on that again. :argh:

FeralOni - February 26, 2008 01:33 AM (GMT)
while i agree that both goldeneye and perfect dark haven't aged to well, i think the worst culprit is the character models in final fantasy seven, they just look SOOOOO painfully bad

Xonic64 - April 21, 2008 12:29 AM (GMT)
I think GoldenEye and Perfect Dark are still highly playable games, they're not that bad.
