Title: Dreamcast 2 in the works?

December 6, 2007 - SEGA Corporation has filed a new application to protect the trademark Dreamcast - sparking rumours that the Japanese publisher is planning on making a shock return to the console manufacturing market with the Dreamcast 2.

The application, sent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval (TARR) dated August 13 2007, relates to:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Web chatter suggests the proof is in the detail of the application - the original Dreamcast didn't have a floor mat accessory and the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is far from the flash memory cards we know and use today - although we'd say that the VMU is pretty similar to the modern day memory cards.

The filing could, of course, simply be a further effort from SEGA to protect the Dreamcast name. According to the USPTO the original Dreamcast trademark is still active. However, the two descriptions are very different. You can see the original trademark description here.

Although I'm taking this news with a grain of salt, I'm at a loss as to what Sega could bring to the market. Would they just be catering to the leftover Sega hardcore crowd? Perhaps we'll see Shenmue III after all?

Most likely protecting the Dreamcast name, there's no way the industry could support 4 consoles / SEGA would be able to support a console now themselves.

Sega, however, putting a console out with Nintendo backing them; it would more likely help Nintendo having a non-restricted control system like a gamepad, so it really couldn't hurt them too badly.

I'd buy a Dreamcast 2.

Whiskerz - December 7, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
I don't think i would buy one, mainly i has no moneys,
but also cause i don't really like consoles.

and id prefer an Xbox any day.

Stevorooni - December 7, 2007 11:53 PM (GMT)
I don't want another console to buy.

Although I'd love it if they teamed up with Nintendo to release a combined console next gen. Hell I'd love it if all the console manufacturers teamed up to make just one console that was backwards compatible with all previous consoles so that I'd only have to have 1 thing sitting under my TV

I still maintain that the Dreamcast is one of the best consoles I've ever owned - while I'm somewhat cautious about what another consoles introduction could do to the industry (and another failure could well bury SEGA), I'm all for another that increases the likelihoods of another (good) Sonic Adventure game.

I can't see this happening, I'm not sure if Sega would be able to compete at the level of the big 3, they're having enough trouble being a 3rd party software publisher.

Though Sega are moving up in the ranks of 3rd party market share, a company like EA probably has a better chance at going for their own console than Sega does.

If Sega did that, I would probably explode. The problem is that, aside from Condemned and VF5, Sega hasn't really made any good games lately. :(

except it'd cost $2000 because there'd be no competition :P

Anyway, I would be very surprised if Sega jumped back into making consoles, especially since some of their characters like Sonic are appearing in Nintendo games now. It's possible, I can't see the future, but I think it's a big stretch... And as Robert said, most of their games just haven't been that good lately, so they'd really have to rely on a lot of third party support if they wanted any console that they might consider making to survive...

D43M0N - December 8, 2007 04:34 AM (GMT)
To be fair, however, some of the ideas that were implemented in the Dreamcast are only jsut starting to be 'realised' by the current market, most notably Microsoft and cross-platform (Xbox and PC) play, internet connections, high definition content (Half Life for Dreamcast was the first game that was to have updated higher resolution content released in packs, but since Blue Shift was cancelled and went to PC the HD pack was released for free and no one really noticed) and keyboard and mouse support.

Sega are innovative in many ways (except for Virtua Fighter 5) so a Dreamcast 2 would be a godsend. It'd probably fail exactly the same though, people hate innovation AND I HATE YOU >: (

Gamespot declares "Dreamcast 2" rumor to be bogus

If Gamespot believes it is bogus than I am more likely to believe that Dreamcast 2 is coming out in 2008. Sony probably paid them off. <_<

Decman - December 8, 2007 09:05 PM (GMT)
Ha! I have unveiled the veil of secrecy! :P I know who the rumour-starters are...beneath our very eyes...it was...IT WAS EVO! *crowd gasps* :P Heheh, remember that little joke in the portal on April 1st? :D

Seriously though, this could all be very true. It'd be great to see Sega come back and break the stalemate between the Big 3. The games industry needs something like that. Sega could be the long-lost brother who disappeared after a heroin overdose, and now's back from the dead for ONE LAST SHOT...GEDDIT?!!? :P Well, y'know what I mean; I'm all for a bit of sprucing up. :) Still, with Microsoft and Nintendo so strong, Sega'd have to pull off something extremely spectacular.

Robert - December 9, 2007 03:38 AM (GMT)
It would take good third party support and for Sega to somehow pull a 180 out of their freefall deep into mediocrity for me to buy it.

Andy - December 15, 2007 12:54 PM (GMT)
With the successive failures (commercially) of their previous consoles (ie Saturn and Dreamcast), I'd say that 3rd party developers would be quite hesitant to get back into bed with Sega's new console - if this proves true.

Especially with the big money being thrown around, I'd have to say that Sega would need to pull off a miracle to get any kind of market penetration.

However, the Dreamcast was one of the most fun consoles I've owned. Such a shame I sold her.I would welcome a Dreamcast 2 to the market, although I'd be hesitant to buy one... if that makes sense.

DJ-Civic - December 16, 2007 02:37 PM (GMT)
Wishful thinking imo...

segax - December 19, 2007 01:38 PM (GMT)
I'd buy one for sure .. it would be great to see Sega again at their full capacity bringing out some original titles once more. Like nintendo. Sega knows how to innovate in their games.

Texta - January 23, 2008 07:32 AM (GMT)
Obviously Sega going it alone with a dreamcast 2 isn't going to happen, but I think it's certainly conceivable that they might join forces with another company such as Nintendo to bring a new console out. That said, if that was the case, I'd be suprised if they went with the Dreamcast name instead of coming up with something new. I'm not convinced that "Dreamcast" brand recognition would have a major influence on sales.

OldSkOoL - January 23, 2008 11:10 PM (GMT)
A combined Sega/Nintendo console would make me wet my pants.
