Title: The Sims 2
JJJames7 - May 17, 2004 10:18 AM (GMT)
As you can tell by my signature, the wait for this game is unbareably painful. For once in a video game, it looks like a game can't go wrong. It will be as good as The Sims, but with a free camera, awesome graphics and the new family system.
InformationI was gonna post some screenshots, but there are so many of them and so many aweosme ones that I couldn't decide! Also, download a video- I'm about to.
This is scheduled for a July release; I think?
Chat away.
EDIT: Here are the FAQs...
| QUOTE |
What is The Sims 2? The Sims 2 is the first entirely-new generation of The Sims, the ground-breaking game that allowed players to create and control people. The Sims 2 challenges you to direct the journey of your Sims' lives as they grow from infancy through childhood, teenage life and adulthood. Read more in the About Section.
Is The Sims 2 a stand-alone or an add on pack? It's first entirely new stand-alone version in four years, since the original launched in 2000.
When is The Sims 2 coming out? The game is slated to release in 2004.
What are the PC system requirements? Check out the System Requirements to learn more.
How will aging of the Sims go? Players will guide their Sims' lives as they grow up. You will be able to guide them thru key life phases including baby, toddler, child, teen, adult and seniors. In The Sims 2, actions will have repercussions, and decisions made when your Sim is a toddler, child or teen will affect their life choices and ultimate happiness as an adult. As your Sims age, they will collect a variety of memories over the course of their lives that shape who they are.
How long will each lifespan be? Each Sim lifespan will progress thorough six different stages: infant, toddler, child, teen, adult and elder. As Sims age into elders, they will live long enough to experience their grandkids growing up. The exact time table, in game time, has not been finalized.
I own The Sims and expansion packs for The Sims. Will any of the expansion packs for The Sims work with The Sims 2? No, The Sims 2 is an entirely new version, based on the original game. There will be new expansion packs for The Sims 2.
Will players be able to create content for Sims 2? Yes, absolutely. We've already been working on a special stand-alone Sim creator tool for players to make their own content before the game ships. The free, downloadable tool will be released on our website in December.
What types of objects are there for Sims of different ages? We are working on a variety of objects that are appropriate for Sims of different ages. For example toddlers will have special toys, including xylophone, teddy bear and building blocks.
Will there be cheat codes just like the original version and the expansion packs? The Sims 2 will have cheat codes, but we anticipate that they will be new.
Will there be a community area in the game or will we have to wait for an expansion pack? In The Sims 2 you'll be able to take your Sims to an all new community neighborhood that's separate from the residential neighborhood. At this point we're planning on letting you take your Sims to this community area to go grocery shopping or purchase clothing.
Will the Newbies and Goths be in The Sims 2? Yes, of course. It wouldn't be a Sims game without them.
What is the maximum number of Sims in a household? There will be a total of eight in each household to keep it manageable for the player.
What will the neighborhoods look like? The neighborhoods in The Sims 2 will be much richer and more customizable. You'll be able to import your own sculpted territories from SimCity 4 to shape the landscape of neighborhoods in The Sims 2. When you are in a lot, you will not see the grey background like in the first version of The Sims.
Will there be divorces? Yes, the Sims will be able to get divorced.
Will teens be able to "play?" No, but adults and elders will be able to play. However, there will be unique social options for each age, including teens.
Will Sims know which room is theirs, and not sleep in their parents room, and parent sleep in the kids room? They will not initially automatically know to sleep in their own bed but you will be able to teach them to.
What build and buy mode objects can be placed in diagonal walls? You can place windows and doors in diagonal walls. At this time we are still exploring the details around other objects.
Part 2 Added on 1.22.04
Will separate families be able to live together? Yes, you’ll be able to create households of Sims living together that are not genetically related to one another. Create anything from a sorority house to a commune or a retirement home to a bachelor pad! You can also create a huge extended family household all under one roof, including grandparents, parents, kids, and various relatives such as aunts, uncles and cousins.
How many floors can a house have? In The Sims 2, buildings will have three stories. In addition, there will be the ability to build a rooftop floor.
Will kids and teenagers be able to have sleepovers? Yes, you can invite Sims to stay over for a slumber party, complete with junk food and ghost stories.
Will we be able to do more interactions with babies besides sing, feed, and play? If so, what are some of them? There will be a lot of special social interactions for babies beyond singing, feeding and playing with them. Your Sims will be able to teach their babies to walk and talk. Adult Sims can toss the babies up in the air and catch them safely. Plus, the babies will need to be changed, bathed and put to sleep. Sometimes, a baby will surprise everyone and toddle over to play in the toilet on their very own.
How will the careers be different in The Sims 2? We’ve made several changes to the career game. First, as your Sims progress though their career tracks, they will have access to different clothes to show off their career levels. In addition, if they make it to the top, not only will they have “styling new threads,” but they'll also unlock a special career object. Your Sims will also now have weekends with some time off from work to spend a little more time at home with their family and friends. Finally, teenage and elder Sims will have different career choices from adult Sims.
Are there any new types of deaths? Yes, in The Sims 2 your Sims will now die of old age.
How much detail will there be for big life events? In The Sims 2, big life moments will have a lot more texture and detail compared to the original Sims. For example, when your Sim gets married or abducted by aliens there will be in-game cinematics and special effects that bring that event vividly to life and effectively emphasize the drama.
Will they able to do laundry? We don’t plan on letting Sims do their laundry in The Sims 2. Why is everyone so fixated with laundry?
If one Sim is involved with another Sim and then has and affair and gets pregnant by that other Sim, will the first Sim that they were seriously involved with know that it isn't their baby when it's born? Yes, there is the possibility that Sims will have affairs and their indiscretions will be revealed.
How will move outs occur? When Sims move out they will take all the objects they own with them. Those will then be available to them in their new dwelling. |
Syt sez: Fixed the broken link. Can't believe noone noticed it. :P

Never been much of "The Sims" fan. I'm interested to hear what it's about and what it offers. But in terms of gaming, there are heaps more on my list that I'd rather play. This would be very low on my list.
Also, I heard the release date, was 4th Qtr this year. I'm not sure though.
Manny M - May 18, 2004 06:21 AM (GMT)
It's going to be pretty darn good....but there's no way I can get into another Sims 2 thread...especially since mine went under with Hyper.....I put so much work into that thread...
Iroquois - May 18, 2004 07:16 AM (GMT)
Whoa damn, this is gonna be big. It's gotta need a DVD-drive to work to get all this information working.
NerO - May 18, 2004 12:47 PM (GMT)
I always found the sims depressing, probably because mine were always so unhappy...
The sims 2 looks cool though, im actually looking forward to it..:)
shame that the next few years of gaming is gonna be so good, exams and all..
Manny M - September 9, 2004 06:11 AM (GMT)
Woah! Been a while since anyone's posted in this thread.. so I might as well get it kicking again seeing as how the game is so close to release.
It's looking to be a fantastic game with so much character, you'd think walt disney created it :P
Seriously though, I urge all interested in the game, to check out the 4
SimIGN articles, as they make for a great read, and provide some hilarious insight into what the Sims 2 will offer.
Go! Now!!
borgster101 - September 9, 2004 06:34 AM (GMT)
I've seen some footage of the gameplay on the E3 Access DVD, and it looks awesome. This is to be the true next generation Sims game, much more realistic in terms of an actual family, life and death and so on :) .
Unfortantly my PC wont be able to run the game :( .
darklord - September 9, 2004 09:41 PM (GMT)
I dunno, Im on a 3 game at MOST this year(been saving since there has been sh*t all out this year :P ) and there are like 12 games I really want.
If it has good reviews, Ill get it, but if it doesn't, ill just rent it.

In other news, Sims 2 is already available on the warez scene >_>
I will be buying it though.

What are the system requirements? Be interesting to know since the majority of people who play this game wouldn't have high-end computers, nor would want to upgrade if they could avoid it.
Lordage - September 13, 2004 02:48 AM (GMT)
I will be buying it too, although due to my current state I am going to have to sell quite a few games to get it. :(
borgster101 - September 13, 2004 05:39 AM (GMT)
Yes, what are the system requirments, (despite me knowing that I still wont satisfy them <_< )

Lordage - September 16, 2004 01:27 PM (GMT)
Oh. My. God.
This game is, simply put, amazing.
I was expecting pretty much the same old from this one, and I was quite content with that as the original was a classic which, in my opinion, still holds its own today. Although after installing the game it was soon apparent this was a complete evolution.
**Possible Spoilers Ahead** - Not that you can really spoil this game by knowing the new features, but a warning nonetheless.
Even from the character creation screen the work done on the sequel was apparent. You can now not only choose what make up, eye colour and accessories your Sims wear, but you can also adjust each facial feature through the tools provided... Every thing from the neck, to the chin, all the way to nose and eye shape/height is covered, allowing you to fully customise the Sims appearance.
When customising your family you can choose from 5 different age classes, Baby, Child, Teenager, Adult and Elderly, each having its own unique set of customisations. Another great feature is the ability to not only create a child from scratch, but be able to tell the game to mix genes from two different Sims, creating their offspring, which then carries their features! It's quite amazing stuff.
Once you're into the game the improvements smack you in the face like a large trout. The basic building blocks and items are pretty much the same from what I can see so far, which doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's the actual gameplay where the major differences occur.
When moving a family in you have 4 choices. You can place them in one of 3 towns, each with its own distinctive set of Sims and landmarks, as well as its own history, or you can create your own village. Each village has its own set of shops, parks, etc. All of which you can visit anytime by simply calling a taxi. You can also visit the homes of other Sims the very same way.
Each Sim has his/her own aspirations, which are things they aim to get out of life. You will have certain objectives to complete in order to fulfill these aspirations and live a successful life. By no means do you have to follow these aspirations if you don't want to, but it does make it a lot easier to become successful. For example, a Sim with the fortune aspiration will benefit from your child being accepted into a private school, whilst a Sim with the knowledge aspiration will benefit from simply helping their child with homework.
The way you treat children also determines how they will turn out as they age. Encouraging them in different areas will effect them later in life. You can encourage them the same way you would talk to a Sim, just by selecting the encourage option, then selecting how you would like to encourage them, for example, you can encourage them to be serious, nice, playful, etc. I'm not too sure, but I also believe this determines their attitude towards school as well.
Which reminds me, your kids also get homework. They can also get after school jobs, but will be fired if their grades fall.
Sims also have days of the week now, getting either weekends or odd days off work/school.
The relationship options are also quite amazing, with something like 5 different ways just to kiss someone, several ways to flirt and show affection... but I'm getting tired and couldn't be bothered getting into anymore. Just trust me, it's amazing.
The graphics are also great, I have them running with everything on High, AA up to max at 1024x768 on my P4 3.0GHz, 9800PRO and 1GB of RAM with no problems. It runs between 35 and 60fps, which is perfect. There have been several occasions when the frame rate has dropped below 25, but this is just when there are 10 different Sims on screen, all doing animations which require a lot of processing power, like juggling and banning teddy bears around.
Anyway, it is a great game, you should ALL check it out!
Now for some screenies!
Take note, I think all of these were taken before I put AA up to max.
Making Out!
Burning the Toast
Save Me Fireman!
I did have one of Peter fighting a 7' tall purple rabbit, but I accidently deleted it. :(
~DC - September 16, 2004 11:13 PM (GMT)
I've only managed to have time playing through all the tutorials thus far, to brush up on the game again, however do you know the estimated real-time it takes for one Sim day Lordage?
Because of the Evolutionary feature, i.e. Sims get old and eventually die, it doesn't seem like there will be enough time to completely do everything you want with a Sim.
Manny M - September 17, 2004 04:24 AM (GMT)
No, there isn't. BUT keep in mind that things happen quicker in this game. You fall in love quicker, get promoted quicker, make friends quicker, so it no longer feels tedious.
I think it's a good addition, even if it does get "sad" watching your sims wasting away.
Lordage - September 17, 2004 04:34 AM (GMT)
I'm not too sure DC, but a day seems to take a tad longer than in the original... And it is a fairly long time, i mean I still haven't had one sim die and I'm around 20days into my first family after playing a good few house last night.

Saga of Spiro Papadapadopoulos:
He married this chick, and it turns out the hoe just wants to sleep with everyone, so I got her to invite a guy over while my main character was at work... he came back to find them doing the wild thing in bed. He beat the shit out of the guy, and told her to get the fuck out of the house.
he's currently in the process of bagging her hot blonde sister

What a life AJ Johnson has lead so far.
He started out as a teenager in a disadvantaged home, who failed high school and was fired from every job he held throughout his teens.
He then turned into an adult, and decided it was time to up and leave his sister and parents and move out.
He found a nice little place on the far side of Plesantville, and seeing as he has a popularity aspiration, he started a career as an Athlete.
Before too long he met a woman named Marisa, whom with he fell in love. Little did he know, Marisa was a Theorist, earning a cool 1,500Simoleans/day! Compared to his wages of 250Simoleans a day as team mascott this was something else!
As time went by, Marisa became stuck in a rut... She could not advance to the next level of her job as one of the attributes needed was Cleaning, of the highest level... Which is pretty much imposible to level up. As such AJ soon surpassed Marisa and became a successful Star Athlete, known and loved by all.
As time went on, and AJ started to age, he decided he wanted to have children. Seeing as there was no room left in their current house, AJ and Marisa moved into a House to the value of 40,000Simoleans, and had a cool 70,000Simoleans left to do it up with. It was apparant old age was approaching AJ fast, so they had a child, Piro, as quick as possible. Soon after Piros birth, AJ matured into an elderly man... but rather than retiring and recieveing a pension of 400Simoleans/day, he decided to continue on with his chosen career, and soon made head coach of his old team!
As a child, Piro didn't recieve much attention, as both parents (Marisa now an old woman too, still worning in Science), he took it upon himself to learn. By the time he became a teenager he was a 'child prodigy,' with great skills in Logic, cooking, mechanics, charisma and body, with am A+ Report card, attending a private school!
And that is wher it ends for now.
AJ is slowly approaching his demise, whilst Marisa managed to drink enough life elixer to live at least another 3 lifetimes. :P
Once the couple pass on, the estate and all inheritance will be left to Piro (as his sister is due to drown in a mysterious pool accident real soon :P ), who, with the knowledge asperation, is sure to make itall a great success.
:)
Oh, AJ also died in a cooking related fire but Marisa beat the grim reaper in a game and bought him back. :P He is now roughly 60days old (the equivilnt of 60 years me thinks...).
Not that you care, but meh, it's there if you want to read it. :P
Ohhh, here is a pic of AJ and Marisa in their new home (that room has the best sound system ever. :P ). Marissa is pregnant with Piro in that shot. :)
Manny M - September 18, 2004 03:12 AM (GMT)
I love the stuff you can come up with in this game.
The fact that your sims age, means that you don't really "care" if you do some extreme things, just to get some character in the place.
Pauly - September 18, 2004 03:26 AM (GMT)
Ok my sister picked up her copy. I pretty much hate the sims and find it really boring but I have to admit this is tonnes better than the original. I was gonna ask you guys about the cutscenes. Say for instance if you get your first kiss or a female sim has a baby, do you get fucked up cutscenes because mine look really shoddy and have black shit going through them
Manny M - September 18, 2004 06:09 AM (GMT)

picked this game up today, attempted to get it from Big W as DC said they had it for $75 only to find out that the lady said they were behind in their new releases and didn't know when it was coming in! considering i came 110km to this place since my town has nothing, i was pretty annoyed. luckily my friend was actually heading up to Perth anyway, i just asked him to stop in Bunbury to go to Big W. once i reached Perth i could only think of a Big W store in Booragoon, but that was too far away, plus my friend just dropped me in town so i couldn't get a lift.
having a browse through some retail stores, i came with these prices:
Electronics Boutique - $89.95
Myers - $89.95
Target - $89.95
Dick Smith Electronics - $87.74
pretty similar, i gave up trying to think of other stores in the area but luckily i had a Coles Myer Staff discount card. now i knew these discount rates are now totally screwed up ever since of early 2003. Myers used to be 10% whereas Target was 7.5%. Today, Myers is 3% (electrical goods only, everything else is 5%) and Target stands at 5%. so i went back to Target and purchased their copy for $85.49. didn't save much in the end but then again i'm a stingy bastard who will willingly walk for kms just to save a few dollars.
didn't get back home until 9pm tonight as my friend got delayed in his appointments and on the way back i had to pay him an additional $15 for petrol. i got some other stuff too whilst i was up there so i shouldn't complain much
anyway, back to the game :P
i'm enjoying it so far, probably spent a good hour just trying to get my 2 characters organised, so many options, so many outfits, not enough time. the movement around the landscape and house is a little annoying. i'm pretty sure that in the old Sims game you could hold the right mouse button and swing your perspective 360 degrees as compared to just zooming in and out, forcing yourself to use the movements located on the taskbar.
having a little trouble so far in terms of interaction but i think the main reason is because my house is so small, everything's cramped in there. i would take some snapshots but i'll probably start anew as controlling 2 characters at the same time is a little complex (i'm used to it in the original, but the new graphics engine takes some getting used to as there's no fixed camera angles).
the item range is quite extensive with different furniture that comes in different colours. no more will you have to stick with that annoyingly bright green couch (which offered more energy and comfort), now you can change it to black/blue/red/whatever. the tv range is a little limited though, quite strange considering how extensive everything else is
okay, enough rambling, it's 2am. i'll report again once i've had a few more hours playtime
Lordage - September 18, 2004 11:55 PM (GMT)
Well /Backslash, the Cut Scenes run fine for me... They're pretty much perfect.
Oh and to rotate the camera hold down on the mouse wheel and swing the mouse dude. :P

huh? i didn't say anything about cutscenes  but in terms of performance i had to tone down some of the graphics, nothing too big, just basically put the shadows on medium detail as well as something else which i've already forgotten. it's annoying, even though i've got a brand new computer i'm still experiencing slowdown, it's mainly because of my 9600xt radeon since i couldn't afford the 9800 series
oh, and thanks for the mouse tip

well then it'd be directly inbetween the minimum and maximum specifications wouldn't it? :P i'd say a pentium 1.8-2.0 gig, 512mb of ram with a geforce 3/4 or a 9200 radeon
btw, there's no reason to shout anything abusive on these forums, if you keep that up then nobody will be bothered to help you again

I got it on Friday it's really good but I think that I'm going to return it because it doesn't run very well on my computer and the DVD version didn't work on my combo drive (stupid computer) and - seeing as I'm getting a new computer at the end of the year and I want to get Burnout 3 now, I'm pretty sure that I've decided to return The Sims 2 and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it again at the end of the year when I get new compy and I'll be able to get the Special Edition DVD then and it'll work... It'd better anyways... So yeah. I might keep it, but I would like to get the DVD version and Burnout 3 and it should be quite a bit cheaper at the end of the year and it'll run VERY well on my new compy I'm not certain about what kind of computer I'll be getting but I know that I'll be building it myself (with the help of a friend, but I'm going to do the actual putting together, he'll just direct me) and it'll be at least a P4 3.0GHz with 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro.
My dad's the one paying for the computer and he said that if he's in a good financial position at the end of the year I'll be able to get a Radeon X800 Pro or a GeForce 6800 GT I don't know which one's better though - I know it's off topic but any suggestions on which one I should get, if I can get either?
