Title: Comic Book Corner!

Sweating Bullets - May 16, 2004 09:26 AM (GMT)
We all kinda knew that this was coming.

I will try and maintain this thread as well as I can but due to work commitments I might no be as in touch as I used to be.

Anyway, here is some lowdown as to what has been happening in the bright world of comics.

Superman is back!! Some broad had put him under a spell and that's why he was missing. He has come back to all his former glory and new creative teams have jumped onto the main titles. Most notably is Superman as Jim Lee is drawing the title.

Secret Identity mini series has finished and was a great read all the way to the end. Would rather not ruin it as it most likely will be a Trade sooner or later.

1602 has also completed its course with Gaiman in the works for yet another Marvel title. 1602 didn't touch his work on Sandman but was a good read nontheless.

Daredevil is still going strong IMO. Joe Quesada (sp?) is penning and writing a new mini series called Daredevil: Father. Issue one lauched a few weeks back and was pretty good. Bendis' current ongoing is the title to be watching closely imo.

A new creative team on Batman is also doing pretty damned good. Dustin Nguyen (art) and Judd Winnick (story) are the ones responsible for bringing to life this 6 issue arc. I can't wait for the next issue to hit, it honestly is a lot better than the Loeb/Lee Hush arc. The artwork is phenomenon (sp?) as with the story! Check this out!

Mark Millar's Spider Man 12-issue stint has started. Its already upto issue 2 and thus far its not bad.

Ultimate Carnage is meant to make his appearance next month I think?

That is all for now.

God on ya Sweating Bullets hope to hear lots from you. On other slightly related news I've begun collectiong New X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman in there graphic novel forms(so no selling my comics to fund retirement) and well I want more money.

Go Sweaty(doesn't sound right does it)

Sweating Bullets - May 16, 2004 12:09 PM (GMT)
Upcoming X title to keep an eye for is Astonishing X-Men.

Written by Joss Whendon of Buffy fame and drawn by John Cassady (Planetary and Captain America) the comic should end up disappearing fairly quickly.

Go quartz_donkey! Its you guys that make this thread alive. Not me!

josh - May 16, 2004 12:19 PM (GMT)
Hey... Have any of you guys read a comic called 'the land of nod' ? if so, was it any good?

Manny M - May 17, 2004 12:04 AM (GMT)
I have finally caught up with Spawn, with the last comic read being of July 2003 (my dad picks up a bulk order once a year).

Don't know what other titles i'm going to get into though.

Any recommendations?*

*Note, recommending Superman will result in a swift and sure death.

jawbreaker982 - May 17, 2004 01:09 AM (GMT)
I was going to start a comic thread but I thought it would be common courtesy to let Bullets get the ball rolling :D

Here's a few reviews guys. I've managed to find possibly the cheapest comics in Australia so I have bumped my monthly order up a bit.

Daredevil Father #1. Written and Drawn by Joe Quesada.

This first issue was a really good read. We get a quick rundown of the DD backstory, with particular focus on his relationship with his father, plus we find out a few things which up until this point had only really been alluded to in DD continuity, namely that Battlin' Jack was a bit of a 'tough love' dad. Quesada then introduces the law firm, plus 2 guys who I am assuming will play a large role in this maxi series.

The art is probably the first thing people are going to notice about this series. It is nothing like Quesada's earlier work on DD, with a rather minimalist and stripped back approach to most of the panels. DD himself is even depicted rather differently, that is to say, gone is the trim, athletic and dexterous bodyshape, passed over in favour of a broad shouldered, heavily muscled, 'typical' superhero look. It works! DD has never looked so menacing as he prowls the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen. As a side note, I think it is clear that Quesada has been checking out a lot of Tim Sales work, as the influence is pretty apparent.

Overall, this first book provides a nice set up, and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here, as Quesada has promised that this will be a conclusion that no one expects. Overall: 8 out of 10.

Daredevil #59. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Alex Maleev.

The work that these two do on this title, month in and month out, continues to astound me. What they have done over the course of the last couple of years is a take a typical superhero with a few interesting twists and turned his world upside down. His weaknesses are now his strengths, and his two worlds (superhero and lawyer) are barely distinguishable. There is a gritty, noirish feel to this book, and it more an in depth analysis of the man behind the mask than anything. Most issues Murdock doesn't even don his costume.

Bendis writes probably the best dialogue in the business, to the point that you can really empathise with nearly every character in the book. There are some genuine laugh out loud moments to be had here, even though this is probably the 'heaviest' the title has ever been. Every story that the two have done on the title is coming to a head at once, and they have even incorporated some of the arcs before they took over the title, namely Kevin Smiths initial volume 2 run. What we essentially have is one huge tapestry (about 35 issues!) rather than a lot of related stories, something that is hard to pull off. Still, Bendis has managed to make me keep wanting more. Kudos.

Maleev's work totally suits the dirty feel of the book, and his ability to 'speak' through a characters facial expression and body language is amazing. His work during battle scenes is a little disjointed and awkward, and there is one spread in particular in this issue which hammers home this point. Still, I can't imagine any other artists on the title so that must say something good.

It appears that the next issue might be the culmination of everything Bendis and Maleev have been working towards, so it should be mighty interesting. Look out for it! Overall: 8.5 out of 10.

Phew...hope that didn't bore everyone. If you guys want, I can hit back later with some reviews of some TPB's, namely the latest Ultimate Spidey and Fables.

Edit: If peeps want some pics I can scan them, but I need someone to host them for me. ;)

Little bit for Uber when he sticks his head in hear is that I'ver read a couple of his recommended Supes comics from the hyper boards and I half to say none of them gave me half the pleasure of Red Son.

Red Son was not about Supes outsmarting or hitiing people it was about the cosequnce of power. Just how much do you help someone before it starts to hurt them. It also looked great with a style that was the best I've seen for a supes comic(check out Russian Batman the hat rules). In the end it was not about good guys bad guys and who was right it was about discovering his place in our world. It is buy and far the best Supes comic I have ever read and it seems I'm ever likely too.

As for non-supes comics to read The Sandman series jumps out as the perfect pick, or if your up for something a bit different Strangers in Paradise is a good read too(just not your normal comic book stuff). Batman Black and White is a really cool collection of short Bats storys from a whole bunch of different writers and artists and well worth a look. Y the Last man is a mini series from DC vertigo and is really cool what would happen if all the men died.

But the Sandman is a series that is a must read brillant art work great storys a different persective on things like good beleaf and other things.

Strangers in Paradise is really a love story but in the most challening of situations. Two girls one guy, one girls is a ex-member of a international gang the guy os the brother to the head of said gang and the other girl is a simple(as girls get anyway) country girl. It is fun and quirky but may not be what your looking for in a comic(ohh theres gay girls;) ).

Y the last man is really cool and shows thought to it's story it's characters the art and is just plain fun. I've yet to read the conclusion yet though.

Batman Black and White is great because you get to see how a whole bunch of people see the character and it they get to be very creative with him.

Übermensch - May 17, 2004 08:15 AM (GMT)
quartz, I'm assuming you haven't read Superman For All Seasons yet, judging by your comments... that book is more about Superman's identity:

How different characters view him: John and Martha Kent knows him as their son; Lois Lane knows him as Superman; Lana Lang knows him as Clark; and Lex Luthor knows him as a man inevitably burdened to face the toughest choices in life. Does Clark Kent know who he is? Is he Superman? Or is he Clark? The fact that he doesn't wear a mask like other superheroes adds fuel to his complex situation. Heck, the fact that he says, "this looks like a job for Superman," speaking of himself in third person, is evident of this.

If you have read it and still don't like it despite what I've just said, then I still very much appreciate the fact that you took the time to read them. :)

Regrettably I must recommend Superman. The current title has Jim Lee and Brian Azzarello at the helm. Looking at what Lee did for Batman during his 12 month stint, Superman will be having a great year ahead.

Also Batman is a top read at the moment.

Supreme Power is another great ongoing title.

Will post more when they come to mind.

Great reviews Jawwy!

quartz_donkey - May 19, 2004 08:56 AM (GMT)
I read a comic called "David Boring" it was by the Ghost World guy and it was just odd. A little soap opera which just happens to be taken place during terriost attacks on the Good Old US of A. It was just about the Dave of the title and his rather pathetic life interesting but I found it self serving.

Sweating Bullets - June 24, 2004 11:51 PM (GMT)
Its been a while since I posted here!

But some titles of note this week are:

Spider/Oc : Year One : with Spidey 2 being released next week Marvel are churning out stacks of Ock related titles. This one looks interesting.

Powerless #1 : What makes a super hero? The powers or the person? I forget which 3 heroes have their powers stripped.

thread ressurection!

went to my local (sydney... an hour and a half away) comic shop on saturday and was greeted by a cheerful young girl offering me a free comic. apparently, it was world wide "free comic day" on sat 3rd july. did anyone else know? if so why wasn't i told? i could have missed out on my free crappy spiderman comic! anyways, did anyone else get anything?

otherwise i picked up a paperback containing issues 6-10 of spectacular spiderman which was sweet. i'm only buying the title because ramos is pencilling... although i saw some later issues and noticed he isn't anymore. bom bommm... does anyone know what he has moved on to?

also noticed michael turner is pencilling batman... sweet! didn't pick it up though cause i was poor and had to still pay for yum cha... maybe next time i can pick it up collected or something. so, is anyone reading that?

aaand one more question... does anyone here buy their comics online? if so where? i've had a quick look through amazon and i found a couple of things but it wasn't really that easy. if anyone does, what have your experiences been like so far?

anyways, that's enough out of me... gotta go watch the footy.

Manny M - July 7, 2004 10:15 AM (GMT)
Where abouts in Sydney did you go Marky?

Kings Comics? Comic Kingdom? The Comic Bug?

And free comic day! What the hell!!

jawbreaker982 - July 7, 2004 11:58 PM (GMT)
Yeah I picked up a few of the free comic books, and they were all pretty darn crappy, especially that Spiderman one. Oh well...

I also picked up a few trades like they were going out of style, mainly because the store was actually going out of business (well at least the comic section: see bitch thread). 100 Bullets trades 5 and 6 (issues 31-43), Outsiders volume 1 (issues 1-8) and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volume 1 (issues 1-6). I also grabbed single issues of Daredevil, 60 and 61.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do now though, as my source of cheap comics is gone and I don't really want to go back to paying $7.50 a pop. Wait and see...

Ooh Kings. Me no likey Kings. They did something to Comic Kingdom about 10 years ago that was just wrong....i'll just say one word, sabotage.

The Comic Bug is a small independant comic shop in Bondi. He also sells a heap of collectable toys and such..awesome guy, his name is Con. Mostly deals in older stuff though.

Sweating Bullets - July 10, 2004 10:45 AM (GMT)
I have been getting Batman/Superman. Fairly solid title imo.

On a side note I have decided to drop the majority of my titles. Need to start saving money.

I have no idea where Ramos has moved onto.

Well, I just saw a glimse of an ad on TV tonight advertising a closing down sale for Impact, they ARE discounting their comics and graphic novels!

Although, like I said, I only caught a glimps of it, but I heard "20% off", "30% off", "40% off", and I saw "50% off Jumpers".

I think they were(in order) T-shirts, Comics, and Graphic Novels/Manga, but the only one I'm sure of was the jumpers one.

Either way, I try to get to Canberra this weekend, as all the good stuff will be gone by Monday methinks. ;)

Suddenly me having to catch the bus home tommorow ain't so bad! :D

jawbreaker982 - July 15, 2004 12:05 AM (GMT)
Huzzah!

I will be in Canberra this Saturday, so I will be sure to check it out. Thanks for the tip Estapol! :D

BrotherEstapol - July 15, 2004 01:53 AM (GMT)
Went in there this morning around opening, got me an AFI t-shirt. :P

But when I left(around 9:30) it was packed!!

Is there anything specific that you wanted jawbreaker? Cause I could pick it up/put it on hold for you on the way home if you want.

I've got a feeling Friday night will be very busy for those guys! :nooo:

Oh and it was 50% off T-shirts, Jumpers(all 2 of them), Stickers, %10 off all DVD's, CD's and Vinyls, and I didn't get a chance to look at the comics, but I think the discounts varied.

EDIT: and it ends on Sunday. ;)

Nah, nothing in particular. I think it will just be some serious impulse buying ;)

Thanks for the offer!

*bumpage*

Sorry for the bump, but I just thought I would make aware any other peeps that are planning on going to the Impact comic book sale that there is absolutely nothing left worth buying. I went Friday arvo with the sole intention of blowing a wad of cash on anything that vaguely looked interesting, and all I managed to pick up was the XForce hardcover for 25 bucks. That is it. Nada, zilch, zip, all gone. There is honestly only about 150 trades left, and maybe 20 tshirts, all crap.

It was a real bummer. :(

anothe - July 17, 2004 05:28 AM (GMT)
*bump*

I went there on Thursday, got $130 worth discounted to about 1/2 price ^____^
I got Akira 2of6 (the b&w novel), The Authority Graphic Novel #4, Planetary/Authority Crossover and Elijah Snow Planetary Figure..I just like Planetary..My brother went later on that day and spent about the same on Spiderman/Xmen Stuff.

But I wish I had more money to get the Resin Transformers Busts - or ANY of them simply because I could have resold them. There were people there who got given crates/boxes to walk around with because they had SO MUCH STUFF! -_- A guy bought 2x 50% off wolverine resin figures ($260 1/2 price)and about 150 comics for example.

I think its really a bad thing now that canberra only has one comic shop now though..Deans in Belconnen only fits about 5 people inside at a time.

BrotherEstapol - July 17, 2004 10:35 AM (GMT)
I offered to buy for you jawbreaker! ^_^

But yeah, like I said before, 30mins after they opened up, it was packed like a Firday night, and then when I went in on the way home(around 5:45) it was even more packed!!! :nooo:

While the guy opened the door, some of the people *cough*SUPER-NERDS!!*cough* yelled "CHARGE!!" while going through the door... -_-

I know, I know. :P

But yeah, the only problem with that was I had nothing in mind that I really wanted, though there were about a hundred trades that I would have purchased more on impulse if they had been there. The only thing I really regret not asking you to pick up for me now was the Marvel Knights and XMen hardcover encyclopedia.

:(

quartz_donkey - June 28, 2005 11:01 PM (GMT)
Live dam you live, hmm this is prob more of a zombie thread then a fully reiveved one, but anyway.

Just got and read Marvel 1602 and thought it was good and very interesting take on the characters and there motivations good stuff.

And it seems to me that comics are only good in "movie" form and it annoys me when people say "I'm a huge <insert comic here> fan and they've only ever seen the movies and have never even read a comic.
