Whats the most over rated lead character you have ever played as in a video game?

Master Chief....he rarely speaks anyway...

Mine has to be Kratos though. Everyones like ZOMFGSBBQ HE R GOD OF WOOR HE ZOO KOOL. All you need to do is paint him red and white, put in blood and gore, a button basher engine and a sex mini game and people absolutely love the protagonist. But i don't really find him too great to be honest, Aeris was a much cooler character (ginger beards are the way forward!) in my opinion.

Master Chief is definitely not overrated in my opinion. The fact that he is completely anonymous means he can never dissappoint. Better than some cliched, muscly, scarred, brute like in Gears of War.

Sora.

A kid who fights with Donald Duck and Goofy, and has a key for a sword. God, get over it. :P

master chief. he was okay in the first game but in the second he turned into a horrible bad ass sprouting one liners.

That's in between bouts of being so damn cool that simply putting him in your party can result in your PS1 taking up smoking and joining a biker gang.

I'd say Dante is overrated, bar none. He just oozes manufactured cool, I don't dislike the character completely, but I also don't put him on a pedestal like many others do.

Master Chief FTW. Guy has no depth, has little to no dialogue and just shoots things. Yet he's loved. That is the definition of overrated.

I heard he won't be the main character in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts games for the PSP and DS. Roxas will be, for the DS one and either Ven or Terra, for the PSP one.

Anyways, to be on topic, I got to say Master Chief, as well. He's on freakin' soda cans at the moment, for crying outloud. As for, overrate, use-wise... the monkeys were highly overrated for Timesplitters: Future Perfect online. So many noobs played as them because of their short size and quick speed.

P.S.: Do we have a most underrated Character topic, I think Sgt. Cortez (Timesplitters: Future Perfect) is underrated.

I think there is a tremendous amount of characterisation about Master Chief. His relationship with Cortana is one of the most beautifully understated elements of the game.

I'm not saying he is the greatest character but he is not a nothing character. And hey, if you wanna go after Master Chief you know you HAVE to go after Gordon Freeman for many of the same reasons.

Dunno who I would pick as most over-rated character. It is probably Link in anything outside of his TP wolf form and the Windwaker version of Link.

This is mainly because the story is so non-existant in early Zeldas that I've been bamboozled that Link is so popular. The games I understand, the character not so much.

But... Gordon Freeman uses science!

And crowbars!

And rocks a magnificently tasteful, flawlessly manicured, yet still masculine beard.

I think it may be because a lot of people don't seem to realise that the Link in each game is different and that with each game in the franchise, the Legend is re-told rather than the story being continued. Obviously games like Majora's Mask are the exception, but yeah I think that may have something to do with it. Especially ever since the OOT Link came about.

I would say Link, or most of the Nintendo characters, actually.

I'm not saying this because I don't like Nintendo games - I've bought just about every Nintendo console/handheld since the SNES - but because many Nintendo characters (like Link and Samus) have no personality whatsoever. They don't talk, they usually don't have emotions - they're just generic hero-types designed to immerse you into the game.

Lots of people vote them as 'the best characters of all time', or whatever, but it makes no sense: they're just the soulless avatars of the player.

Indeed. There was a very specific reason I singled Windwaker out when talking about when Link love has not equated to overrating.

Hmm, maybe. But one game doesn't stop Link having absolutely zilch personality in other games. Whereas I wouldn't consider Link one of the 'best characters of all time', I'd certainly consider him one of the most iconic, a bit like Mario, really.

No it doesn't. Note I listed Link as the most overrated character. Just saying that in Windwaker he was awesome.

After playing (or attempting to) through FF7, I don't understand why people got so attached to Aeris. Big whoop, she's a bunch of pixels.

Tidus and Zidane Tribal, I couldn't play IX for the whole reason of Zidane and Tidus character was just agony, he was never in my team.

I'd like to clear something up, not ALL FF protagonists are emo jerks. The early FF's on NES/SNES etc were alright, anything after FF7 is what I think is overrated, except Zidane from FF9, he was decent.

One could make a case for Terra and Cecil... :whistling:

But, I do agree with you. I have no idea what this "DZ" is talking about with all of the protagonists being emo.
