borgster101 - September 13, 2007 09:11 AM (GMT)
So, I log into Steam and what do you know, software update, looks like the Steam Community features (i.e. like Xbox Live for PC) are now fully up and running.

So I've set myself up a Steam Community ID, all Evo members should do the same, apparantly my ranking is teh suck at the moment :P Looks like I'll need to play more PC games :P

You can see my SteamID user page here

So yeah jump on the bandwagon! :D

borgster101 - September 13, 2007 11:10 AM (GMT)
Hmm .. well so much for this update, I tried to pre load the Orange Box, but it doesn't seem to work, looks like Steam is still be updated at the moment ...

Community features look pretty cool though.

Excellent! - I've joined, however I think it might be a little buggy still as I haven't been able to add new servers recently.

Yeah I originally bought Dreamfall via Steam, via the Longest Journey/Dreamfall pack, bargain price for two awesome games! :D

As for an Evo group, thats a good idea, I'll start one up when I get home from uni :)

borgster101 - September 14, 2007 07:24 AM (GMT)
Evolution Forums Group. I've made it invite online so we keep to actual Evo members, so any Steam users (there has to be a few of you) speak up! :D

So how is pyro? I am very curious to hear how the pyro is now.

Ninja Catfish - September 20, 2007 12:22 AM (GMT)
I've tried the Pyro a few times. Not a favourite class of mine, but effective in close quarters :)

borgster101 - September 20, 2007 10:46 AM (GMT)
I'm not a huge fan of Pyro, can't seem to get close enough :P

ElPresidente - September 20, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
And he just doesn't seem to do the damage he needs to. :(

Most people don't stand still and let you continually burn them, so at best, you light a few guys on fire with your initial charge. You can switch to shotgun and try to take out one or two, but usually you are already dead by the time you switch weapons.

borgster101 - October 7, 2007 11:07 AM (GMT)
Come on people, we need more people to join the Evolution Steam group!

Surely more of you at least have Half Life 2, so you MUST have Steam! :P

borgster101 - October 8, 2007 03:41 AM (GMT)
Yay, special Steam sigs, more reason to get on bandwagon! :P

Texta - October 8, 2007 07:55 AM (GMT)
texta149. Just don't look at my tf2 stats... :|

Ninja Catfish - October 8, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
My sig is so much better than Steam sigs <.<

Steam's great, but it has a much limited game repertoire compared to another tracking program like XFire.
For sigs, XFire > Steam :)

Well yeah, but all XFire is really, is a chat client that recognises what game you are playing, whereas Steam is a full blown digital distribution service, with content improving dramatically very recently.

But yeah for sig purposes XFire still has the better use, though the Steam sigs links to Steam ID which then shows off Achievments in games and stuff ... which will grow as more games support it.

Questions:

Say I "do" purchase the Half Life Orange Box. What's Team Fortress 2 about? Is it like Counter-Strike? Are the environments enclosed or is it more of an open area (like Battlefield 2)?

Can you go in there with guns blazing or is it a more tactical game? Counter-Strike always seemed to be so hard for me

What's the recommended ADSL speed? I'm currently on 512kb (well, not now)

ElPresidente - October 10, 2007 12:49 AM (GMT)
Oh slashy... poor poor slashy. No knowledge of Team Fortress. :P

Okay here is the deal...

Team Fortress was one of the first class and team based multiplayer shooters. It was a modification for Quake made by a bunch of Australians.

The game was played in a variety of modes, most notably CTF and territory control style gamemodes. It didn't have straight out deathmatch.

Team Fortress 2 is the most recent in a long line of TF updates over time including Unreal Fortress, Team Fortress Classic (released by Valve as a HL mod) OzTF and others.

Previous TF games have been quite serious in their visual tone going for either a military or sci-fi feel. TF2 has bucked this trend, going for bright cartoon style visuals. The benefit of this is that finally you can see a player on the horizon and figure out which class they are which is very important for working out how to defeat your opponent.

Maps are quite tight, similar to what you get in Counterstrike although there are one or two maps with open areas.

The class system allows you to play pretty much how you like. The game is very fast, frantic and full of explosions so if you like slower paced games this won't be your bag. Other than that TF2 has something for everyone.

If you don't want to be racing around like a maniac shooting every which way you can be an engineer and set up automatic turrets and other helpful items for your comrades to use. Want to be more helpful? Play as a medic. Like subtly, be a spy and disguise yourself as your foes. Fast running around action? A scout or soldier will be up your alley. Want to dish out huge amount of destruction then look up the Heavy Weapons Guy.

I can pretty much recommend this to anyone who likes shooters online. Your connection slashy, while not ideal, is certainly good enough to play.

borgster101 - October 10, 2007 01:13 AM (GMT)
Summarised perfectly Presidente :D

Not long for Episode 2 now!! :D

I finish uni at 1pm today, so when I get home I'll get some study out of the way, then at about 5pm, Episode 2 will be ready to play! WOO :woot:

Random Hero - October 10, 2007 05:37 AM (GMT)
Will 360 owners have to endure the wretched EA's servers?

Considering my crappy ADSL connection can you really blame me? :P

I hate slower paced games so this might be the ticket for me, are there any demos of sorts?

borgster101 - October 15, 2007 09:09 AM (GMT)
I don't think there is a demo.

borgster101 - October 26, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
*BUMP*

I know there's more of you that use Steam, show yourselves! :P
