Title: Podcasts
Description: Oh, the opportunity!
Decman - June 19, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
This is an idea that's been floating around in my head for a while now, and it might or might not work...
Why not introduce Evolution Podcasts? Say, once every fortnight, or month, or perhaps at completely random intervals, podcasts of perhaps, 30 mins to an hour could be done by a different member (or perhaps two if the members know each other and live within close proximity) where they illustrate their views on the gaming industy, what's been happening in the forums and in the process, delivering their own unique style to their podcast.
Having podcasts would really make Evolution different. Now, of course, I know, it's usually blogs that do podcasts, and having them on a discussion board might defeat the whole purpose, but it could really distinguish Evo from all the other generic gaming forums out there (not that this place is generic, really it isn't).
The added bonus is that Evo is such a tight-knit community, that contributing via podcasts probably wouldn't be particularly embarrassing; we all know each other well enough...I mean, I'd be more than happy to do one, though me having dial-up might be a slight problem.
The podcaster could be chosen by an admin or the role could be taken up by those willing to do one. Once done, the podcast could then be uploaded to an external file-hosting site, and then linked to back here.
Feedback?

Interesting idea there Dec but I do have to wonder, do we have enough regular members/visitors here to justify making one every month, fortnight or whatever? What would make our Podcast so much different from the various others out there that random (or not so random) gamers out there already listen to?
Ignoring the above questions though, I would be happy to participate in one given the opportunity. If it sees me giving my opinion on various things moreso than I do now, then that suits me (but not the rest of you :P) fine. Hell me and the Brother could even hook up if he's interested...

Sounds great and i'd love to see or should i say hear it happen, i wouldn't participate though. My voice always sounds so high and whiny when recorded.

Well, there does seem to be a steady stream of guests here whenever I'm on, and the comps and advertising schemes that Evo has running should attract more. It's not so much about making a podcast for the masses, but making a podcast for the people here (like the comics), therefore, it's not really down to member count. I mean, the podcasts could be as irregular in arrival as the comics (haha, no offence there slashy :P), but I just think it would be cool for those willing to have their hour or so of fame, and their opinions voiced...literally. :D
borgster101 - June 20, 2007 04:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah I thought of this myself actually, I think I probably have a good "podcast voice" :cheese: . But I dont really have a clue how one would start to record a podcast, and all that other stuff that has to be done, I guess firstly I need a mic :P And I believe you can record a podcast via the net with various participants or something, but I'm not sure on the specifics, but provided all these details could be ironed out, I'd be more than willing to give it a go

This sounds like a really good idea to me - if it takes off I'll get a mention of it in the Gamehead newsletter as a major EVO event, advertising it to thousands.
Should give the first caster a little touch of publicity :)

You heard the man, let's make it happen. If somebody could get ahold of Film Guru we'd really have something going, he's a natural at this kind of thing.
D43M0N - June 20, 2007 07:15 AM (GMT)
Why not do it in a Teamspeak setting? Then it can be recorded, not everyone has to be near each other, and it's more of a forum style discussion than just a back-and-forth between two people?
borgster101 - June 20, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
Beta Podcast Now Available!!! :D
This is a
very quick job, of me just testing what something like this would be like, enjoy! :P
_MetalliX_ - June 20, 2007 07:32 AM (GMT)
ANYONE but borgster!! :P
:o
He said ass! *shock*
"Probably should have some kind of preperation..."
Meh-cha-velli?! Haha! :P Mack-e-ah-velli.
Considering nothing was really said, it was surprisingly entertaining!!

Well at least it was entertaining, that's something!
It was only a Beta, mind, BETA! And no preparation at all :P
_MetalliX_ - June 20, 2007 07:42 AM (GMT)
After hearing a demo podcast I'm really behind this now. Just entertainment value from hearing another members voice is enough to give this a go-ahead.
Ok, how about some minutes? (ie. topics for discussion) so we can get this moving. No point procrastinating lets get it going!
- Excite Truck Comp/Gamehead
- Forza 2 + Car design
- DiRT
- Transformers the Movie
- ...well now its up to you!
borgster101 - June 20, 2007 07:45 AM (GMT)
Yeah I'm all for it :D
I think I'll try a more organised version next with some actual discussion of Evolution forum happenings (like points you have mentioned), and it would be great if we can get a few of us to join in on a podcast for the first official one, so it's not just me talking :P
But just recording that simple test version, I just had fun doing it, WOO lets do it!!
Random Hero - June 20, 2007 09:13 AM (GMT)
OMG even if it was just a beta that was great, with two or three it would be perfect. nice going on getting it going so soon. The main reason i like this idea is because unlike the comic we don't have to wait such a long time. :D
D43M0N - June 20, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
Indeed; I'm still in favor of a 'forum discussion' thing in Teamspeak/Ventrillo sometime though.
Edit: also needs more pictures :P and PANTS
Edit 2: after listening to it in full, it definitely has to have some structure, even just bullet points that people can converse over. Don't see the need to download specific podcast software, why not just .wav recorder and convert into MP3  well, whatever, twas enjoyable but as said, needs more pants and other forum members to have a decent debate.
borgster101 - June 20, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
More pants?
And yeah I agree it's for the official podcast launch we'll have a few of us join in on the fun :D
Decman - June 20, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
This is fantastic! I thought I would be probed by with sticks. :P I'm sort of bummed out I won't be able to listen to any of this because I've got dial-up, but I'll do a European podcast (and I've got a few of the guys here on MSN, so I can just save voice-clips for like an...overseas...interview...thing) if one of the admins PM their address or local post office's and I send it over on a disc via airmail. :D
I agree with D43MON. Just .wav it. Use sound recorder, but if you've got the stuff then by all means do the whole studio thing. :P There should be some structure to it...my suggestion is just to write out an intro, the main body of the podcast and then after that, just fit things to your personality.
EDIT: Ha ha, awesome. I'm very gradually getting to hear borg's podcast (could be about an hour before I get the whole bloody thing). Coolio. :D:D:P
/backslash - June 20, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
No mention of me, I'm very disappointed in you borgy :P Thought for sure you were going to mention me in the Excite Truck comp, possibly about it being my fault that there aren't many entries
You sound different to how I imagined, I dunno, I always make up these voices inside my head of what each forumer would sound like. It's similar to reading a book, you don't read a conversation about a girl in a man's voice, you imagine a girl's voice. You know?
I don't think I could do a Podcast myself, I hate my voice, it sounds okay to me just as long as it doesn't get recorded because then I'll go "Do I really sound like that? God I must seem really annoying and whiny to people". Plus I don't have a microphone either so yeah I'm out

Aww come onnnn, we love you slashy. Ah well dude, it's obviously not going to be for everyone, and obviously we need an audience too, so it's all good I guess. :D
borgster101 - June 20, 2007 01:42 PM (GMT)
Sorry for no mention slashy, this was a really quick job, and honestly I just couldnt think of too much to say without a guide of some sort, I just wanted to test it out. This podcast software is pretty cool you can add music and do the whole mixing thing if you want :cheese: but I'm a bit of a noob with that  But it's better than just a .wav job ;)
Don't worry I'll give more people shout outs in future podcasts :D
And yeah, I think when you actually hear someones voice it's always different that you imagine, just like when you see someones photo, its not how you pictured them.
NismoR34 - June 20, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
I personally don't have a mic so I wouldn't be able to help out by myself, but if by chance a fellow Canberran that I don't think I need to mention has the right setup for this then I am happy (if he is) to go and be apart of this along with him for the Podcast or whatever. Or someone can somehow record my (shitty) voice through Xbox Live - either one. ;)
Edit: Haha, if I finish Zelda do I get the "Shut up Borgster101" Achievement? :P
Decman - June 20, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Well n00bs, mics aren't expensive. You can easily pick up a cheap one for €10 (and $$$ equivalent) or if you have a webcam, it should pick up sound. :D

Borg, I can't believe you've been pronouncing my username incorrectly all these years. Shame on you! :P Alas, I cannot participate as I don't have a PC mic either. I'll have a look around for a cheap and nasty one sometime next week.

Yes, I know, damn internet where such things are not known until you hear someone speak :P
thebigm - June 21, 2007 08:43 AM (GMT)
mmm Podcasty goodnes... however I wont have internet for a week soon... looking forward to hearing what happens though ;)
Qubert - June 21, 2007 11:08 AM (GMT)
I'd love to see this become like a weekly thing. Can't wait. :D
borgster101 - June 21, 2007 12:17 PM (GMT)
I'm planning to do another solo podcast sometime next week (hopefully), to ease the wait for the proper launch with a few of us particpating. This next solo effort will be in a more structured fashion, i.e. I'm going to plan ahead!
So what do we think of a soon to be released borgster solo podcast that will have some actual stucture this time round? In fact, Poll added! :D
/backslash - June 21, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
I voted but instead of selecting "borgster again?!" I selected "the Beta rocked!" :( :P
I managed to borrow my brother's microphone but I can't get it working. Arrghh, I really don't want to buy one

It might sound stupid, but make sure you plug it into the correct place, I couldnt get mine working until I realised where it had to be plugged in :P
/backslash - June 21, 2007 12:34 PM (GMT)
I plugged it into the sound card hole (back of the PC) that had a picture of a microphone above it. How far off could I be?!
Note: I originally plugged it into the speaker's headphones and music plug :P

Decman - June 21, 2007 07:06 PM (GMT)
Mach, Borg, Estapol...
Can one of you PM me address details or something? I'd like to do one, and in fact, I can do one ASAP, but I've got dial-up, so uploading is impossible. I'll send a disc via airmail, so any ideas?
borgster101 - June 22, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
Dec, perhaps we'll just see how we go with staff contributions to the podcast first.
It's cool your excited and what to contribute, but sit tight for now ;)
Also wouldn't it be easier (and faster) to upload it from the UK anyway? Rather than send it all the way down here? Surely you can access broadband internet somewhere in the UK? :P

Well, for one thing, I don't live in the UK, and I only go back every few months to see the family and what not, but yeah, my granddad has an 8.8mbps connection, so I guess the next time I'm over I could upload it then, but I'm actually going to England for three weeks in a fortnight, but I guess nothing will be ready by then, so I guess I'll just have to sit tight until October or whenever the next time is that I go over.
borgster101 - June 22, 2007 09:41 AM (GMT)
Ah ok..
Thats still easier than sending it to us :P
