Title: HALP - XB360 or PC?
Description: It could go here, or there, wherever

D43M0N - June 14, 2007 04:00 AM (GMT)
Title says it; I've been shying away from PC gaming more and more, it's become a distraction, so I'm thinking of getting an Xbox 360. For under $1000:

Xbox 360 Premium Forza 2 pack (Premium console, 1 month of Live Silver, Forza 2) - $665 (staff discount rools)
Dead Rising - $90 I think
Gears of War - $50
Crackdown/random EB 1/2 price game - $50
Live Gold Sub - $70/80 at JB w/headset
+
Ex-government Laptop for schoolwork/Starcraft - $500-600

The PC would be fairly high end, E6300, 8800GTS, etc etc. But aside from Supreme Commander, there's not much I play; I've finished it all. I can give up SupCom, but I'm keeping the posters and stuff coz it's so cool, and will keep the game incase I do get a new PC under my own dollars down the track. Between that, and WoW, there's nothing for me, besides Starcraft which is owning me a bit right now.

All the new releases are coming out on 360 (Bioshock, etc) as well; very conflicted here.

This is basically replacing the new computer, which is being bought by my brother for me, but it's ultimately my decision, I guess. The only issue I can find is that my TV is a 34-cm CRT, which kind of defeats the purpose of HD gaming, but I can always buy a new TV later (they're getting hella cheap); and there's always the 64-cm upstairs.

I'm really conflicted on this, so I'm turning to the only people who are able to give me enough reason to turn my decision: the internet.

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong place, because it's both PC and Console related, my brain was all asplode.

Edit: oh yeah, I guess if the ex-gov laptop is cheap enough I can get an LCD monitor to hook it into. Sexier for DVDs as well.

I'm not really any help as I went for both.

The best advice I can give at the moment is in regards to a TV - don't bother. Better to spend $500 on a nice large LCD monitor to double up as your TV rather than $250 each on a monitor and TV, I made that choice and I'm as happy as I could be.

We'll i'd go for the PC but a friend of mine recently spent like $2000 on a gaming PC only to find himself pretty board with PC gaming a few months into it. He then had to fork out and buy a 360 which he plays soo much more.

Seriously dude, go for PC gaming. Your games will look better, and there are so many amazing exclusives (Crysis, SupCom, Med. TW2, Quake Wars, STALKER, UT3, SC3 to name but a few) coming out, that your eyes will bleed on a pimped rig.

Go PC. :D

D43M0N - June 14, 2007 08:34 PM (GMT)
Sorry bro, Dead Rising won out this time :P Maybe later, but right now, as it's my brothers money, it's better to owe him less so I can pay him back quicker and get my own stuff sooner.

Stevorooni - June 14, 2007 09:10 PM (GMT)
I had the same problem recently, but all those stories of the 360 breaking put me off.

So I gots the new PC and I don't regret it :D

Some 360 games are heading towards the PC anyway.

D43M0N - June 14, 2007 10:45 PM (GMT)
The ones I'm looking forward to are, anyway (Bioshock and Fallout 3). The only PC games I play are SupCom, WoW and now Starcraft; I'm getting an office PC so I'll be able to play SC and Diablo2 and so forth, so I'm not totally phasing out PC gaming. The lure of Zombie genocide is too much for one man.

FPS and RTS is the only way to game... right? PC gaming is way too restricted to certain genre's you miss so many good games that way.

To say the PC is restricted in genre is ridiculous. There's a PC game for each niche. Plus, the PC makes gaming highly accessible, far more than its console counterparts.

PC gaming is no where near as accessible as console gaming.

Resident-Seven - June 18, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
Also, Dead Rising can be bought for just $62... or less. I don't get the "1 month silver membership" either.

$44 at JBHifi.

Other X360 bargains at same store:
- Saints Row $44 too
- Table Tennis $35 I think
- Project Gotham 3 $32
- DOA4 $32
- Perfect Dark Zero $29

I don't really do much PC gaming but I find myself buying a $1000 makeover every few years irregardless. Lately I've been playing 2D puzzle adventure games

Yeah, I meant one month Gold, which I'm using now.

How decent is At Worlds End, R7?

Although i'm a pc gamer through and through i've got to agree with this. PC gaming can be a bitch sometimes, so many things can go wrong, it's so not pick up and play at all.

Perhaps, perhaps not. If you've the right specs, then all you have to do is buy the game and play. Just like a console. Unless you seriously need to, a high-end PC nowadays won't need to be updated for another 4-5 years, and the steep price can be justified by the sheer amount of technology inside it, and the plethora of applications the PC can be put to.

D43M0N - June 19, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
A high end PC not being updated in 4 or 5 years? When XP came out, people were running Pentium 3's and low end Pentium 4's; now you'd be lucky to find a P4 in a gaming machine. When Vista ends (2012, 5 years) hardware will be radically different, especially if you are going for a gaming PC.

I'm a relatively newbie PC gamer, having only been in the field since the turn of the century, but despite all the unique experiences the PC can yield, I'd think the newer model XBOX has a lot more potential to it. The games library is more than extensive, the online marketplace is admirable and the fact that you never have to muck around tweaking stuff all the time is just so much less time consuming and so much more relaxing.

The PC is really just a over-whored platform for MMOs and staple shooting games. That's my view on the current market, outside of a few odd gems.

Sadly, I don't have a 360 just yet.

I'll back this suggestion and recommend getting a good-quality LCD television. Most are perfect for high-end console gaming, plus can also accept VGA connections for the PC. I played World of Warcraft on my 26", for a time, a short while ago and it was a blast!

It's also a hell of a lot more cost effective.

Resident-Seven - June 19, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
My PC is 18 months old, and it can still play just about any game on full detail in 1600x1200. So, scaling down the resolution, or details when I need to, it should still last a couple of years yet.

Despite the 360's library being 'more than extensive', the PC as we know it has around 15 years + of games, so to say it's just an overwhored platform for MMOs and FPSs is stupid. The PC is the home of the RPG, RTS and adventure game, so it's more than just a playground for those playing WoW and CSS.

The PC is always going to offer more variety than a console, especially in terms of genre.

Okay, well, it doesn't matter anymore really, D43MON's bought a 360, so let's not flog a dead horse. Look at it this way: a console is for someone who likes music, so they buy an iPod, while a PC is for someone who likes music and ends up buying a brain-rupturing sound-system, with a recording studio out the back. More options. :P

Random Hero - June 19, 2007 05:08 PM (GMT)
The PC is very good, obviously has the most potential and options. Downside it needs maintenance and skill to keep it running stable. ;) Not a skill many possess anymore these days it seems. I would never choose between the PC and Console, both is a must these days. :)

Whoa, easy there, tiger! :P

Keep in mind that I mentioned that this is just my view of the current market. While I recognize that the PC is extremely iconic for many reasons, it just hasn't been so much so in my gaming life. Sadly, my greatest experiences in the field are limited to various Blizzard titles, some poorly-designed Korean showboats & a few other games of smaller note.

The real beacons, like your point & click adventure titles and the like, I really have not had the experience with, though I must admit I would love to.

I've always been a console gamer at heart, though more recently I love the handhelds.

Ha, sorry :P. I've gotta take my beta-blockers. :D

Yeah, you're right, many games on the PC are excuses for functional pieces of software (especially all the Korean MMOs which are basically just soft-porn *cough* Lineage *cough*), but keep an eye out for the gems. Of course, a PC can be a pain to fiddle with, and the constant battle with graphics cards and RAM and stuff is a financial drain, but once it's done, it's worth it.

If you want a good, modern adventure game that'll run on an average PC, look out for Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. It's seriously worth the play, and I'm sure many here will tell you the same.

Sorry, missed the Q first time round. At World's End is... ok... if you like that universe. There are some thing about it that arre annoying, like the story, it makes no scene (even though it's meant to be based on the movies). But it does look quite nice in parts, and is one of few games that runs in 1080p (as far as I know). Plus, you also get the Calypso backstory as an extra, if you collect certain things.

It really is all about personal preference and what you loved growing up. It's like asking whether your a beatles man or an elvis man. Console or PC is a tough question and it's so easy to say both. I think i'll always be a PC man myself.

The difference here is that console and PC are both totally valid choices and can be mixed freely without angering the gods.

The Beatles, however, are the only valid choice when placed alongside Elvis.
