Title: Metroid Prime: Hunters
Description: Get your Hunt on over WiFi

Shadow Knight - May 13, 2004 03:26 AM (GMT)
Metroid Prime: Hunters is one of the DS titles shown at this years E3.
Suprisngly Retro Studios aren't behind this title, they didn't even know about 'til E3 2K4. The peeps at NST(Wave Race) are developing this title. the game looks alot like Prime. The game looks awesome with it's new engine and looks alot better too, with alot of people worried about the control scheme at E3 2K4. Worries have been put to rest and the game looks to be a killer with it's new graphics/setup.

Yeah I saw a video of it in the Nintendo press conference. It doesn't look too bad, although everything seems much bigger than on the Cube, probably so they don't have as much polygons on the screen at any one time. The Nintendo guy said that you touch the screen where you want to shoot, which frankly I think is a terrible idea. How are you supposed to see what you're shooting at if half the screen is being covered by your finger? @_@

A much better idea would be to have the two views reversed, so that the radar is on the touch screen and the main view is on the top screen. If you want to change beam or visor, you touch the radar and a grid overlay appears showing you the beams & visors in your possession. You touch the beam and/or visor that you want, then move your hand back to the 4 main buttons, and after a few seconds of no input on the touchscreen, it automatically changes back to the radar view. And all this time your left hand has been free to use the directional pad, so you can easily change your loadout while on the move.

I think Nintendo's ideas are admirable, as being able to touch the screen to shoot would negate the need for an aiming button, but it's a little too impractical.

No no no, you can shoot where you tap the screen if you want, but you normally shoot with a button. They used an example of Samus locking her target to an enemy, and then tapping the screen to shoot at a different target while still being locked on the first enemy.

Personally I think it's a good idea/option as you can lock onto enemies while shooting others behind. :)

Hello - May 14, 2004 08:05 AM (GMT)
Well, I read over at IGN that it could be a good idea, but the controls are just that little bit too fiddly.
I'm pretty sure that it's a multi-player only title, too.
It's damn cool that they can get Cube-like graphics on the machine, even though the frame-rate apparently chugs along...

Shadow Knight - May 14, 2004 09:51 PM (GMT)
The only playable feature at E3 has been the multi-player, no sigle-player modes have been confirmed. The multi-player is a handheld version of the multi-player in Metroid Prime 2. It'd be good for Nintendo to include Wi-Fi capability for this one as there is no single player game as of yet.

I thought that Hunters was ajust a demo they made to show off the multiplayer and the graphics capabilities!

They said it's mostly just the multiplayer from MP2: E, and they put it on the handheld to show what it can do....

So it's an actual GAME now!? Is it still just mupltiplayer?

I remeber someone from Nintendo saying that on IGN.

May the confusion is because it's a demo of a game

Pauly - June 9, 2004 12:28 PM (GMT)
It's definitely a game. And that's straight from the mouth of a Nintendo guy himself (as posted on IGN I think). Can't remember his name sorry :P

Miyamoto revealed that they plan on include a control scheme for Metroid Prime: Hunters that does not require the touch screen, due to several people worrying about having to hold the DS and use the touch screen. He also revealed that the touch screen may get dirty from playing, but a cotton swab is apparently useful.

Well all those people worried about the touch screen controls can rest at ease.

Cotton swab my arse. My GBA SP screen takes water and a cloth to clean properly and it doesn't even get touched! The Nintendo DS will be a much different matter, I assure you. <_<

Just adding a new video. It looks a bit hard to control but i read somewhere that Nintendo were fixing the issue.

Notice that the touch screen is now used as the map/interface, this must mean that you control you character like normal, and the stylus is used to select weapons and whatnot. ;)

UltraGekko - September 23, 2004 02:05 AM (GMT)
I've also heard that there will be two control options so both camps should be happy. One using the stylus to aim etc and the other using the d-pad and buttons.

Hunters is also a full game with both single and multiplayer modes. The DS will be packed in with a demo of Hunters which will contain a sample of both the single and multiplayer modes.

Demos for a handheld? And a Nintendo handheld at that. Who'd have thought. Is this the result of the 'cheaper' memory media for the DS? Of course it could just be Nintendo trying to aim the DS at a older demographic and to provide even more incentive for consumers to pick up a DS.

I'd say it's a little from column 'A' a little from column 'B'. ;)

Pauly - September 23, 2004 05:32 AM (GMT)
That new screen looks hot. Wouldn't mind if they provided both control schemes because I'd be interested in giving the touch screen a go, although it doesn't appear to be very practical. Hopefully the Dpad plays well because it will be hard to recreate the gamecube controlls on the DS if the dpad isn't very fluid.

borgster101 - September 23, 2004 06:24 AM (GMT)
Interesting how the perspective have swaped screens :)

Pauly - September 23, 2004 07:23 AM (GMT)
Looks much better IMO.

That's an interesting change. I guess no more "tap the screen to shoot" style gameplay.
It still looks hot! :D

borgster101 - September 25, 2004 12:39 AM (GMT)
Well there were some reports that tapping on the screen to fire was a bit awkard, I think down at E3 Nintendo was merely experimenting with ideas of how to use the touch screen, but yes Hunters still looks great :D

Earlier this week Nintendo revealed that Metroid Prime: Hunters for the Nintendo DS has been delayed into 2006. Today, the company announced that the game will be using that extra time so the development team can implement support for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection online service. Previously, the game was only to work locally with four players wirelessly, but with support for Nintendo's service, players will be able to compete in Metroid Prime: Hunters over the Internet.

While a delay is never a good thing in this case I think it is worth it. Nintendo needs more titles that push it's Wi-Fi service and a solid FPS should be able to do that.

borgster101 - August 27, 2005 04:52 AM (GMT)
Yes this is a good thing, it would have been a shame if the game came out within the a couple of months just missing out on the WiFi boat, in this case it looks like all the Nintendo published DS games are going to support WiFi, which should thereby translate into more 3rd party support of the service, and then hopefully strong online support for Revolution at launch!

UltraGekko - November 6, 2005 03:26 AM (GMT)
Hunters has been given a March 20th release date for the US so we should follow shortly after.

There's a new trailer available (IGN version here) and I've gotta say 'wow'. Graphics have improved over First Hunt (the demo) and they even show off some of the single player aspects. If they keep a healthy dose of the puzzles in there to balance the extra shooting it should replicate the GCN experience well on the DS.

Hopefully this will be the game to show devs that the DS touchscreen suits the FPS genre perfectly.

borgster101 - March 11, 2006 01:22 AM (GMT)
Well guys this game is looking to be a fantastic title, it's set for a May release in Australia and you can now check out the TV Commercial here.

The delay for WiFi capabilities is looking like it was a good decision, there's a lot of content in this game, and it's still got a lengthy single player component :)

NismoR34 - March 12, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah and apparently the single player component is just short of the original Metroid Prime's length. Sounds good enough to me. :D

This game will be definitely one of the games I buy alongside my DS Lite, for sure. (It is Metroid after all, how could I resist?)

borgster101 - March 13, 2006 06:05 AM (GMT)
I look foward to playing against you via WiFi connection Nismo (hopefully you'll have the means to connect :) )

borgster101 - March 14, 2006 02:06 AM (GMT)
Australian Release Date

May 25, 2006 bit of a wait compared to the US release date, but if some of you are waiting to get your hands on a Lite first, then this is release date is probably good news, in that hopefully the Lite will be released by the time this game comes out :)

Lite and Metroid bundle sounds good.

IGN Review sounds great, with a couple of minor shortcomings.. But an overall killer game :)

NismoR34 - March 23, 2006 05:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah, don't worry dude. I will have WiFi for the DS Lite whenever it happens to arrive, so Metroid shall be something we enjoy together. Or something.
Depends on how addictive Mario Kart and Animal Crossing turn out to be. ;)

I'll be getting it when the local release hits, hopefully the Lite will be out by then....

Random Hero - May 4, 2006 07:37 AM (GMT)
Could someone explain the point system used in Wi-Fi matches; like, how many points you get for wins? im especially interested in this game
Thanks.

Ali G - May 29, 2006 12:53 PM (GMT)
I got this on Friday. It's pretty awesome, especially the online multiplayer (except for Trace/Shock Coil whores). The single player's all right, but Wi-Fi is where it's at. My friend code is 0430 2107 6019. PM me if you add me, so I can add you back.

DJ-Civic - May 29, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
Watch this space guys. Nismo, Borgster and myself will be on WiFi by the end of this week hopefully.

borgster101 - June 1, 2006 04:11 AM (GMT)
So I got a chance to play Hunters, and I've been impressed thus far, defeated the first boss and collected the artifact thing, it feels similar to Metorid Prime in that there is scanning and shooting, not much puzzles yet, but it's early, the adventure mode seems pretty cool, it's not as polished or as a grand as the GCN games but its still fun. The graphics are amazing for the DS platform, especially when playing it on the Lite, the bright screens really bring out the graphics in this game.

Played a little WiFi, and got my arse kicked, I killed a few guys and didnt come last in a 4 player match :D , too bad the game only seems to register your wins (i.e. 1st place), though you're kills and other stats are saved, which is nice. It would be good to play aganist some people of the same skill level (you can attempt to connect with a random person that has a similar skill to you, but it's not perfect), the best way would be to play against Evo members :D So Civ, Nismo, played the game yet? On WiFi? Post your friend costs :D
Here’s my code :)
