Title: Poll of the Week 5
Machiavelli - June 13, 2007 07:48 AM (GMT)
I've gotten much better at finishing games that I started, thankfully. However, when it comes to 100% completion I tend to drop the ball, leaving me with a lot of unfinished business. I suppose that puts me in the 'I'll beat most of them, just to see the ending' category.
How about you?
borgster101 - June 13, 2007 07:53 AM (GMT)
I'd be in the same category as you Mach. I finish all my games, in the sense of seeing the ending these days, but its rare that I'll finish a game 100% there's usually something missing, like getting every heart piece in Zelda or maxing all characters to level 100, once the game is over and I've completed most of the interesting side quests or things to do, then anything else is just a collectathon :P
Decman - June 13, 2007 08:59 AM (GMT)
I try to finish every game I buy, and the only reasons I won't are because: a) it's a rubbishy game b) my interest runs in it out or c) because I find it too scary (as is the case with Project Zero ) or too difficult.
I don't make a habit of it, but like Mach, nowadays I make some form of attempt to finish every game I have, because, well, quite frankly, I have nothing else to do. :P

I fall into these categories
The only ones I seem to finish nowadays are puzzle games like Phoenix Wright/Hotel Dusk. If there's a game that doesn't involve levelling up, there's a good chance I haven't finished it. I feel sorry for the developers who take all that time trying to make an ending when I haven't seen a majority of them.
At least I have access to Youtube so I can pretend I've beaten it :P
borgster101 - June 13, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
YouTube has made you WEAK slashy.
Oh and ...

I'm not weak! If I was weak, could I not tear this piece of paper?
*attempts to tear paper, gets papercut, gives up and lies down to recover from exhaustion*
And are you sure you're not /backslash? You look like me
_MetalliX_ - June 13, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
I use to have an unwritten rule where I would finish every game. But lately I can't seem to find the energy to finish them. Out of 6 Xbox 360 games, I've finished 2.
That's compared to a 100% completion rate with all my previous Xbox games.
FreakTrigger - June 13, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
I like to finish things to absolute 100%, every nook and cranny, and do when I can, but I simply don't have the time these days, which has essentially resulted in me just buying less games and playing them over a longer time period.
Robert - June 14, 2007 04:36 AM (GMT)
I always leave games unfinished, I really only finish the A+ titles every year or so.
DJ-Civic - June 15, 2007 07:00 AM (GMT)
I'll finish most, but there's some I can't be stuffed to. Either I don't have that urge to finish it or I don't have the time, which sucks at times as games like REmake need to be finished.

I'm not sure myself who's who these days, I know I can't tear paper for the life of me though! ..... . .. .......

I can't be stuffed finishing games to absolute 100%
Angra - June 16, 2007 04:14 PM (GMT)
Rarely finish a game. No time.
NismoR34 - June 18, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
While certain recent examples (*cough* Zelda *cough*) may suggest otherwise, I think I'm a completionist. How that word is defined though depends on the game in question. Generally speaking I will play a game until I see its ending, however if it's a racing game or a game with a whole bunch of side quests or whatever, then that will change to me trying to experience as much as possible from whichever game it is at the time. I mean obviously I finish all racing games 100%, or at least try to. Games in that genre make up the majority of my collection so in a way it's not too hard to be a completionist. But yeah, generally speaking I'll consider a game finished if I have seen the ending or bulk of the game.
And while yes, I talk about them a lot I have to say that the Achievement system on the 360 suits my gaming 'style' to a tee. Again, I couldn't give a shit about the actual points but I do care about getting the most amount of achievements from a game as I possibly can. I think my 'love' (for lack of a better term) for them comes from the fact that I am a completionist, so yeah.

Translation: "I'm an Achievment whore" :P
Quatters - June 19, 2007 05:30 AM (GMT)
I find I don't finish games because I want to finish them 100% and then end up getting a little bored, buying a new game and not going back to the old one! But I've been better recently!
Robert - June 19, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
What's this whole achievement thing about anyway, there is a lot of talk about it. Do you get a little rush every time you get one or something? Have M$ invented digital crack? :P

Thats sounds about right :P
They are pretty pointless really, but it does give you something to "aim" for, and makes you play the game in ways you might not usually because of the Achievements. It's such a simple concept, since games have had always had "Achievements" just not in the gamer points fashion, but rather a complete the game fashion :P, and games have tracked them before (within the game itself, Smash Bros Melee for example. Only this time it's a unified collection of all Achievements for all games and I guess it's just cool to be able to look over all the cool experiences you've had in various games.
It's addictive nature makes people spend more money too (eg. multiplatform games are favoured on 360), so its a win for MS :P
ElPresidente - June 19, 2007 06:51 AM (GMT)
Even though I'm far from an achievement whore (only 7.5k points) I too will buy a multiplatform game on the 360 even if the only difference between the two versions is achievements. Shameful I know. :D
D43M0N - June 19, 2007 08:25 AM (GMT)
I'm getting addicted to achievements; I spent 2 hours the other day trying to get the "Blowout" achievement in Forza 2. I was crushed when it was only 5GP :(

:yes
:P
NismoR34 - June 19, 2007 05:25 PM (GMT)
Hey, I'd rather be addicted to Achievements than real 'crack' anyway so that works for me. :P
But yes generally speaking Achievements make certain things in games a little more enticing than they otherwise would be. Why that is though, depends on the person playing the game. Some will obtain Achievements to boost their scores, some will do it to make them feel as if they have completed a little more of the game (I fall under that one) and some will do it to try and beat their friend's scores in whatever game they're playing.
It brings competition between friends, more game time in the various games, more playtime for the 360 as a whole and indeed (in some cases) more sales for games - that can only be a good thing for the various parties involved no?
Nags - July 9, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)
Yeah i usually finish the games that i really like in a matter of days, and i shift between multiple games to try to get to the ending, in a much slower fashion.
