Title: Final Fantasy Discussion Thread

Comrade Natrak - May 4, 2004 09:20 AM (GMT)
Final Fantasy, it's one of those games that almost anyone enjoys. Most of us are FF fanboys here so this thread was inevitable. :P

Anyway, let's talk FFXII. :P

As most of us know, it's set in Ivalice, and while it isn't the same world that existed in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance it does have each of the races from that game. So far five Playable characters have been revealed.

Vaan - Vaan is the main character, as with everyone else, very little is known about him so far. :P

user posted image

Ashe - Definately looks like she'll be the love interest. She's shown in the trailer in a wedding dress, lined by loads of people. It definately suggests that she has some importance in the land of Ivalice.

user posted image

Balflear - I know nothing of him, he's dressed a lot more formally than Vaan, so perhaps he's of a more noble heritage. He reminds me of Zell. :P

user posted image

Fran - The only character revealed so far to have a character class that isn't Hume. She's of the Viera race. The rabbit-like people from FFTA.

user posted image

Panerra - I believe that's the correct spelling. Apparantly she's a friend of Vaan's. She's supposedly energetic and enjoys dancing and singing. Every FF game gets a female character like this, Yuffie, Selphie, Eiko, Rikku. (basically she sounds like she's going to be annoying :P )

A lot of people are speculating from the trailer that battles could be in real-time this time around, we could also be seeing the abolishment of random encounters something that's been speculated on after seeing Vaan running around with his health bar on display.

I'm looking forward to E3 to get more information on what could be a great FF game.

Rhinokorous - May 4, 2004 10:03 AM (GMT)
Sounds really cool. I've always been a FF fan but mostly I didn't start playing them until FFX I always watched my bro but never got involved. Now that I'm playing 10 I'm up to Seymore in the Gagazet Mnts and Kihmari is my strongest but I've still got a long way to go. I've also played Crystal Chronicles with my friends and its really really fun I recomend it for those who have it but its funner with more people. Well anyway I just thought that I might post in here because I'm really excited about FFXII

Comrade Natrak - May 4, 2004 10:29 AM (GMT)
I loved Mt. Gagazet, if only for the fantastic music and Kimahri's showdown with Biran and Yenke. It was a great part of the game.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If that's true and it turns out to be another FF:CC I'm gonna murder some Square-Enix CEO's!!! RPG's should stay turn-based, simple as that. There's no room for tactics or thought when everything's real time. If i wanted an adventure game with a story I'd play CC.

EDIT: I take that back, there's no story in CC. :P

Comrade Natrak - May 4, 2004 11:10 AM (GMT)
Heh, if Square added the ability to say, pause the game while planning attacks in a real time system that could work. But you're right, turn-based action is much better for placing strategy into battles. I think both systems definately have their pros and cons. However, whichever Square choose I'm expecting them to do a fine job of it. (remember, CC had a very different team working on the game then who usually work on on FF games. At least I'm pretty sure that's the case ^_^;;)

Rhinokorous - May 4, 2004 11:12 AM (GMT)
Yeah I must agree with you guys, I love FFX a lot better than CC but when I play CC I get to interact with friends instead of them just watching me play and I love that

Lordage - May 4, 2004 11:36 AM (GMT)
Nice info there Nartak!
I for one can't wait for FFXII. Even the little bit of info so far is getting me excited!

Gilder - May 4, 2004 12:13 PM (GMT)
Actually Panerra is Vaans girlfriend. Vaan and Ashe will have a special relationship that is supposedly different to previous FF leads. Do your research properly Natrak. :P

Balflear is an air pirate like Vaan, and they have some kind of special history (cant remember off the top of my head). His weapon of choice is the pistol, and looks to be the requisite 'cool' character of the game. He also works with Fran.

Hopefully, Square will remove random battles but still keep the game turn based, ie. instant battles no loading times. At the moment it just looks like the appearance of weapons etc on the field screen is to navigate traps and obstacles.

Anyway, thats some info I remember reading off the top of my head. Theres more info out there though.

CLL - May 5, 2004 01:39 AM (GMT)
Good news is that Square-Enix have announced their E3 titles. And I'm damn glad to see FFXII on the list :)

Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia (PC, PS2)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Front Mission 4 (PS2)
Fullmetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (GBA)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS2)

OldSkOoL - May 5, 2004 05:50 AM (GMT)
Finally finished FFX.

Beware Spoilers if you haven't finished the game Hit page down or something!

Jecht wasn't as difficult as I thought. Seeing as I had Break Limit for Yojimbo, Bahamut, Shiva, Valefor and Ixion he didn't provide too much problems. I used Valefor and Ixion both doing around 30000 respectivley with Ifrit chipping for another 9999. Then it was down to Kimahri and Auron, Auron dealing out 9999 everytime and Kimahri averaging 9600. He fell down to Aurons Shimmering Blade.

Then onto the Aeons Kimahri and Auron killed each one 'Overkill'. Onto Yu Yevon this thing started off as a pain until I decided to Zombie him with Auron. So Auron was taking off 9999, Kimahri 9600, Tidus around 5000 and he was Curaga'n himself off 9999 as well.

As for the ending it wasn't as great as I was expecting, really sad to see Auron sent but hey he died at least 10 years ago, He had to go sometime. The whole Tidus and Yuna scene on the ship was very emotional especially when Yuna told Tidus she loved him.

TrinityJayOne - May 5, 2004 08:47 AM (GMT)
OldSkool, if you wanna kill Yu Yevon REAL easy, just cast Reflect on him. Everytime you attack he cures YOU, not himself. :P You literally can't lose.

Comrade Natrak - May 5, 2004 08:52 AM (GMT)
Trin, you literally can't lose anyway :P

Since you have auto-life on constantly. Which is ridiculous.

Besides, an even easier way is to use Zombie Attack and then Phoenix down. :P

OldSkOoL - May 5, 2004 01:20 PM (GMT)
Well its too late now, I whooped him. In other news I have began my ultimate weapon guide and the guide to get the other Aeons mainly the Magus Sisters and Anima.

Buffoon - May 5, 2004 03:05 PM (GMT)
Yes, can't wait for Final Fantasy XII, FFX-2 wasn't enough to keep me satisfied for long. And yes, I hope they don't go too far down the path of CC with XII. I know it's reactionary, but I like the FF series the way it is... turn based and random encounters. I say don't mess with a winning formula.

Ghazrat - May 6, 2004 02:35 AM (GMT)
 Is that a Paupu fruit Vaan is holding?

Comrade Natrak - May 6, 2004 04:02 AM (GMT)
It definately does look like one, only green.

confusedonlooker - May 6, 2004 05:39 AM (GMT)
I beat Yu Yevon by casting doom as Kimahri's Overdrive, I'm pretty sure its the only doom that works. He was gone in 4 turns!

I've always found random battles to be a bit of a mixed bag. When I wanted to do something without interuption they were horrible, but on the flip-side in each FF I spend hours just leveling up and can't get enough random battles.

I hope the go back to the battle system used in FFX, it gives you more time to think about your strategy. I'm used to FFX-2's and have finished the game but I still love FFX's the best.

Machiavelli - May 6, 2004 06:48 AM (GMT)
Final Fantasy XII has already been confirmed to have a world map and in particular, the world map will resemble Final Fantasy XI's in its vastness - this is fantastic to hear. I remember first stepping onto the overworld in FFVII, seeing it in 3-d for the first time, and that music - nothing short of magical.

Comrade Natrak - May 6, 2004 07:16 AM (GMT)
Yeah, the lack of a world map in Final Fantasy X made the game seem much more linear, so that's definately good news.

tinklez - May 7, 2004 02:21 AM (GMT)
FFXII was been pushed back to winter (our summer) 2004 - spring (our autumn) 2005 in Japan. Apparently though, it'll have little affect on the US release date, though I can't imagine when it'll eventually Oz. Oh the agony... :(

Rhinokorous - May 7, 2004 10:42 AM (GMT)
Wow!! I watch my bro finish FFX and I must say I really loved the ending, but now after reading all these posts you guys have just givin me easier ways of beating him!! Muhahahahaha...... uhh... *coughs* uh yeah even though I'm like no where near the end.

same. that has to be one of my favourite gaming moments of all time. after being stuck in midgar for all that time and all of a sudden having an entire planet to explore... joy.

Iroquois - May 11, 2004 06:58 AM (GMT)
Seeing as FFXII is going to take place in Ivalice - the same world as FFTA - does that mean that we get to customise the world map just like in FFTA? That was an interesting part.

Or not. It doesn't look like it could work on a fully-fledged FF game like this.

Maybe I'm just overly pessimistic, but with a schedule as vague as winter 2004 to spring 2005 (a six month period by definition), I don't sense much confidence that it's going to be done anytime soon. Not good.

:(

After the Jump Festa video there was an interview that discussed the game's development and Square admitted that it has been slow lately. I just hope this game doesn't become the next Star Ocean III.

wow, those models are looking nice and high res... i wonder if square will keep the lower and higher poly models in this inst6allment.

Iroquois - May 12, 2004 05:08 AM (GMT)
@markymark - probably. For important plot-development scenes they'll use high-poly and for scenes that just need to advance on quickly they'll use low-poly. It stands to reason.

markymark - May 13, 2004 02:04 AM (GMT)
yeah... i guess. i just hate the low poly models in x and x2, whenever i see them i always cringe.

Machiavelli - May 13, 2004 05:15 AM (GMT)
Beautiful - I can barely notice the lower polygon count. The only thing that bothers me is Vaan's odd placed nose, and his rib cage seems out of place on his model when designed as 'muscles' - i'm sure, however, that they'll clean it up by release. Other than that, it certainly looks playable, and I eagerly await it's now slated 2005 release.

I'm with you OldSkOoL, sometimes I think i'd prefer it if they left the voices in Japanese.

MrRae - May 13, 2004 05:22 AM (GMT)
Or, he could just put a frickin shirt on, problem solved :P

I swear, weather has no meaning in these games :S

Final Fantasy XII Hands-On

Certainly one of the most highly anticipated games on the E3 show floor is Final Fantasy XII, the forthcoming chapter in Square Enix's beloved role-playing franchise. We recently posted new details on the game's plot, but now, we've finally played it ourselves and are here with a full report.

Like most every new Final Fantasy installment, this one introduces an entirely new cast of characters and takes place in a unique setting--though, incidentally, this game does share its setting with the recently released Final Fantasy Tactics Advance as well as the original Final Fantasy Tactics. Longtime fans of Square (before it became Square Enix) will recognize the distinctive art style in the game as resembling that of Square's unusual action adventure game, Vagrant Story--which is entirely a good thing, because that game's visuals were exceptionally good for its time. And, indeed, if only from looks alone, Final Fantasy XII is also very impressive. However, what surprised us wasn't the look, but the gameplay.

This does not play like any previous Final Fantasy games. In fact, you could easily mistake it for an action adventure game rather than a standard console RPG, but don't take that remark the wrong way. All it means is that Final Fantasy XII does away with the awkward, yet ancient, role-playing conventions of random battles and jarring transitions between exploration and combat. Instead, in Final Fantasy XII, you'll never get taken out of the core gameplay experience, except when the game shows you a cinematic cutscene or when you access your status menus.

That means combat occurs seamlessly within the game's fully 3D environments--no screen-shattering, no your-guys-on-one-side-bad-guys-on-the-other-side battle screen, no signature Final Fantasy victory music as you collect you gil and cure potions after you win, none of that. And you know what? We got the distinct impression that this is the best thing to happen to the series in a while. By extension, it may well be representative of a refreshing, new direction for the console role-playing genre to head towards.

Admittedly, that last statement may be a bit over-the-top. The truth is, Square's Vagrant Story actually played similarly, only it featured a weird location-based, rhythm-based combat system, whereas Final Fantasy XII is more by-the-book and lets you command up to three characters at a time instead of just one (and you see all three characters running around in the environment). Basically, the action occurs in real time, but you can always pause to issue new orders. The simplest order is to make all your characters attack a given foe, in which case they'll stand there and dish out the pain as often as they're able to attack, which is fundamentally similar to combat in previous Final Fantasies.

However, you can get pretty tactical with this system, and use the physical location to your advantage. You can have your ranged attackers hang back and fire away while your melee fighters suffer the pain on the front lines, for example. The signature spells of Final Fantasy all seem to be here, though we didn't get to try out any summoning spells or anything too spectacular. Still, we felt good about the combat, which comes across as more dynamic and somehow more plausible than in previous games.

It wouldn't be a Final Fantasy without some strange gameplay "system", and this next chapter will be no exception. This time you can assign "gambits" to your characters, which work like tactical orders. The basic gambit determines whether or not members of your party will follow the main character's lead, but other gambits may allow characters to deploy different strategies in battle by default. Such systems tend to be pretty deep, and frankly, we didn't get to explore this aspect of the game in too much detail during our relatively brief time spent with the game.

We did get to see a lot of the game's cutscenes, which are as beautifully produced and choreographed as ever. The characters emote subtly and their respective personalities come across very well--or, in other words, we kind of wanted to just stand there and play Final Fantasy XII all day to figure out what the game was all about.

For that, we went straight to the source. In an interview with FFXII director Yasumi Matsuno, we attempted to plumb the erstwhile director of Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story for new story and gameplay details. He was understandably mum about the plot, though he did confirm that there are no direct connections to any previous game set in Ivalice--it's the same world, but don't expect any familiar faces. Matsuno also expounded on the gambit system, telling us that there will be 10 gambit categories, and that new gambits will be treated like items (that is, you'll typically buy them from vendors or find them dropped by slain monsters).

Given FFXII's impressive character animation system, which includes emotive facial expressions, Matsuno said the team is attempting to keep as much of the game's cinematic content in-engine as possible. However, CG will still be used for grandiose scenes of battle or the flight of airships, for instance. On the game's music, Matsuno said he's asked composer Hitoshi Sakimoto to create a slightly more up-tempo and optimistic score than the characteristically moody fare he's provided for previous games such as Vagrant Story. Series composer Nobuo Uematsu will be creating the game's theme song, which has a theme of love. Matsuno noted that Uematsu's love song has even influenced a slight change in the game's storyline.

Matsuno told us his design philosophy for Final Fantasy XII is one that marries the best aspects of off- and online RPGs. That's not to say the game will have stilted online components--quite the contrary, it's as focused on story and role-playing as any game in the Final Fantasy series. Matsuno told us that, while there are gameplay elements of online RPGs that he finds appealing, he's annoyed by the compulsion to be social in such games. FFXII will therefore bring aspects of MMORPG design, such as the aforementioned open-ended combat system, to the defined narrative structure that Final Fantasy is known for.

There are a lot of different playable sequences from Final Fantasy XII on the E3 show floor. Each demo station allows players to choose from nearly 10 different scenes, indicating that the game is well along in development (between the variety of settings and the already-apparent level of polish to the game), despite the recent announcement of the game's delayed release. At any rate, we figure Square Enix is going to use all that Final Fantasy X-2 money to make sure this next one's as good as can be. We'll bring you more details on the game just as soon as we can.

Finally some more solid information on the gameplay! ^_^

Random encounters are confirmed to be gone, and the battling is played out in real time, however as you can read in the above quote, you are able to pause the game and issue orders. It sounds like Square may just hit a nice balance for those who are sick of turn-based action and those who still want it.

Rhinokorous - May 13, 2004 09:19 AM (GMT)
Hey I know this isn't a Playstation game but Its a Final Fantasy thread so yeah. Today my friend and I finally defeated Crystal Chronicals. We were having such difficulty with the last boss and unable to find any decent help guids or walkthroughs I decided to post what I thought was the easiest way to beat him. First of all you DO NOT need Phoenix Downs, they are good to have yet they take up command slots. As long as you have cure and life and a command slot free you will be fine.

The Parasite Meterorite- This boss has three stages and both all are very easy. For the first and second level pick a side and drop your chalice defeat the annoying plants and slash at the boss tentical. For the third stage you have to take out both plants and be careful of the Meterorites firing attacks and the tenticles huge attack which he starts doing on level two, just keep on the move.
After defeating this boss you will be sucked into the chalice where you have to listen to this spirit called mio to blab on and on and on, after awhile she will ask you five questions about your memories, which was very hard for me and my friend considering her memory span is about as bad as a goldfish (lasting only 3 seconds)

RAEM 1st form- This is very easy, just kill the two little spirit things that sound just creepy and then slash the crap out of the boss. I personally suggest a Lilty for a character because they are small and hard for large enemies to hit and they are also very fast. Soon this form will be dead.

RAEM 2nd form- This form we found really hard. He takes on like a huge sword shape. Slashing at the claw does not hurt the boss. use this time to cast cure on the memories of your family that appear in bubbles to gather magicite. ( blizaga, curaga, thundaga, firaga and an invincibility shield. this comes in handy) Although the magic is strong your physical attacks are usually stronger. After slashing at the claw a few times RAEM will lower to the ground and fire some terrible dark beams, these take off a lot of hearts so make sure that your timing is right and slash at the eye in the middle of his two arms. If you have the invincibility shield you don't have to worry about dodging that is until it wears off then you should run like mad.

After a fair few amounts of hits he dies or actually you find out that RAEM and Mio go to "sleep" for awhile then the ending comes up. Which I must say I didn't really like. It was stupid it was just my friends character (1st player) who walks around the background constantly changing with different characters running around the Miasma free world. Although the ending was pointless it still was a relief to defeat the game.

Well hope you guys enjoyed my post. Wow its like the most I've ever writted. well ciao peeps

Gilder - May 13, 2004 11:31 AM (GMT)
It looks like FF purists are going to hate this game. I'm gonna love it.

*dances to the demise of stupid random encounters*

Machiavelli - May 13, 2004 11:31 AM (GMT)
I'm quite excited about it, as it sounds a lot like I thought it would be; a mix of tactical RPGs like BoF:DQ, but given a bit more vagrant story-esque action. It's going in the right direction for me, although this is going to be less successful/popular than FFX I think due to it's requirement for strategy, and it's darker story, but who knows, it may just strike well with a large audience.

While I don't mind a change in the system. I wish old school touches like these - "no signature Final Fantasy victory music as you collect you gil and cure potions after you win" were still in. Hopefully they didn't cut out post fight poses.

OldSkOoL - May 14, 2004 02:14 AM (GMT)
Wow a change in the series. I suppose it's due time for a change.

I'm with Mach as well. God No victory music. That was a highlight for me!

markymark: Yeh I posted that on Hyper.

If Vaan has a Tidus voice I will cry.

CLL - May 14, 2004 02:19 AM (GMT)
I think the change is good. Not that the series needs a refresh, but just to keep things lively and not as predictable.

yeah, i finished it in 3 player mode on the weekend with my mate and his girlfriend and it was her character in the credits at the end. i thought it was a little bizazrre because she was second player and overall, probably did the least amount of anything while fighting the boss.

couldn't work it out.

also, we finished the eighth year and went onto the ninth... which spun me out because i thought there were only eight years. how far does it continue on, i wonder...
