Title: Next Nintendo Handheld...
Drake - June 4, 2007 12:54 PM (GMT)
What would you either like in the next Nintendo handheld system.
- I would like a headset thing for online game so that you could talk to other players
- Updated graphics (though not necessarily, needed)
- Better online gameplay (though not necessarily, needed)
- Better online infrastructure
Add onto this list with your own ideas...
borgster101 - June 4, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
DS already has a headset ;)
Also, DS is doing amazingly well, so I can't see Nintendo bringing in a new handheld anytime soon.
FreakTrigger - June 4, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
I'd like to see a shift even further away from the current standard d-pad 4-button control scheme.
Quatters - June 6, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
What I want.
-Mario Kart 2
-But with online Battle Mode 8 player.
-8 Player online GP
-Larger friends list
-Make it easier to set up games
-Some way to stop people cheating and hacking it.
-Before online races/battles begin, the game AUTOMATICALLY records that you have 4 losses. Only after the series is finished that it updates it. That way anyone who disconnects cops an automatic 4 losses!
But Mario Kart DS 2 aside, more power obviously for more advanced games, ummm, more games...
I really like the DS, I really can't see much else I want!

I'd like to see Nintendo not make their handheld's basically redundant after a year. Also, a more ergonomic design would be nice, sure the DS looks nice, but with big hands, and the buttons so small and so close to the edge of the unit, its not easy to use.
Ali G - June 6, 2007 06:00 AM (GMT)
I want them to get it right the FIRST FUCKING TIME. :P
Robert - June 14, 2007 06:14 AM (GMT)
It won't happen for years and I don't know if I even want it to happen then to be honest.
BrotherEstapol - June 14, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
Come-on, Nintendo can't help but release a new GameBoy iteration eery few years...there's bound to be something in the works.
Strike that.
I bet my life that there is already something in the works...the guys down at r&d need are getting paid to do something. ;)
That said, I'm pretty sure the DS's sucess is unprecidented, and I'd probably say that Nintendo will, for once, hold out on a new handheld untill the DS's sales start to dwindle. (I'm pretty sure they're getting to the point where everyone in japan has a DS buy now :P )
Quatters - June 19, 2007 05:34 AM (GMT)
The DS is still the fastest selling console. So while Ninty will be planning their next console, I doubt we'll see it in the next 2 years.
Robert - June 19, 2007 05:43 AM (GMT)
2 years at least and even then the DS Lite will continue it's life for at least another year after the next nintendo portable is out.

Nintendo’s newest patent:
“A game system includes a housing to be held by a player. The housing incorporates an XY-axis acceleration sensor to detect an acceleration in an X-axis and Y-axis direction and a Z-axis contact switch to detect an acceleration in a Z-axis direction.”
They’re quite welcome to make a patent that never amounts to anything, but this looks a bit indicative to me.
Personally, I’d be happy enough if they’d just release a console with a charger that doesn’t have that pain in the arse stuck-sideways thing going on. I can stand all the tentacles and giant dinner plate eyes, but Japan really dropped the ball there.

They should do a wide screen like the PSP's, only touch sensitive. That way they could keep going with backward computability by allowing you to turn the screen sideways to play DS games. And definitely do away with friend codes, or at least make them something a parent can enable/disable.

An analogue stick, good portability, good battery life and PS3 type graphics.

PS3 graphics...
Desirability: Yes.
Probability: No :P
Besides, the touch screen makes the inclusion of an analogue stick a little superfluous for most users.
The DS already has a good battery life and portability, too :)

IMO they should have a friend code, but it's a DS code as opposed to game code. So once you've got a friend's DS Friend Code they're on your friends list for all games.

they should make it some kind of goggles that you wear and then they make everything 3D and tinted red - that'd sell millions!
:P

I think that's actually a keychain - I'm pretty sure you can buy them. If it is real the stylus would be damn tiny! (not that I believe its real)

Not key chains, they're strap, things.
samiboi - January 9, 2008 12:32 PM (GMT)
Bumping an old thread here, but I still can't see ninty making another handheld any time soon, the DS is still doing pretty damn good, but I'm sure it'll be something very revolutionary, like have 10 screens or something... ok so maybe not that many... but you just know it'll be cool
Quatters - January 12, 2008 02:42 AM (GMT)
Considering the DS is outselling everything bar the Wii it will be at least two years before a new one.
They'll probably release some new colours, clear, red, green and some more big games like Smash Bros DS, but I see no new console for a while.
IMO they've started developing the new one, but I don't think it will be drastically different from the DS in regards to features.
More powerful certainley, maybe some inbuilt memory as well...
Stevorooni - January 18, 2008 05:09 AM (GMT)
The next one will probably have 2 screens again, but both will be touchscreens and I reckon there will be some sort of motion/tilt control built in.
I also think there won't be much of a gap between the screens, just enough to allow it to fold, but small enough that it's close enough to being one big screen
Quatters - January 18, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
I don't know about the tilt, it's a handheld so people will be using it on public transport and it might interfere with the game.
The 2-1 screen though not only sounds viable, but awesome!
Queenie - January 23, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)
I'm sure they took out development years, many years before the DS' successor simply because it's going to take a couple years for them to figure out what their new gameboy's selling point will be.
