Title: The Worlds Greatest Movies.
Description: Nominations
Squato - May 29, 2007 02:51 PM (GMT)
OK, this is something that I've been thinking about doing here for a while, that is to find out just what are the most loved films around here.
Now the idea is simple, you list 6 films which you find to have that little something in them that makes them rise above the ocean of...well crap. From there I will collect a list from the nominations after a month. From there I will run a series of polls until we come to the top ten films are found.
So to get this started, here are a few films from my person "best of list'.
The Bourne Identity
The Shawshank Redemption
The Blues Brothers
The Castle
The Abyss
Serenity
Now before you add films to this list there are a few ground rules I want people to follow when adding their films to the list.
1) The film should be longer then 80 minutes.
2) It should have been in cinemas no later then May 30th, 2006 (anything after will not count)
2.1) In the event a film was shown as a limited release in cinemas at the time (say in an overseas market), or has been wildly picked up on DVD after the release, then an extra 6 months will be added to the original date in rule two December 30th 2005). This rule has been created to close a loop hole created by anime films and "cult" films.
3) More then one type of genre when you nominate (best to have none in the same genre).
4) Do not nominate the same film more then once (or one that someone else has nominated). If you do, no others but the first will not be counted (this does not mean that film stands a better chance of "winning").
5) Only vote in the poll that they are in.
6) You can list six and only six films as your nominations. There is no issue with listing others that you wanted to nominate (stand by list), but I will only take those six (or the six that have not been listed before).
7) You can not nominate a series as a film. Only nominate one of those films which you want to be counted (case point just LotR's or Star Wars over naming one of the films from those series).

1) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2) Jurassic Park
3) I, Robot
4) The Last Samurai
5) Batman Begins
6) Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Don't kill me on number 6! I honestly enjoyed it. It just had a really dark, tear-jerking ending I think. And Ewan McGregor pwns. :D

I'm detecting high levels of Akira love in this thread.
I approve of this and am greatly pleased.
The Castle is definitely an odd choice - I'd be extremely hard pressed to put it in the top 10 movies of all time, despite loving it to bits. It's just so damned culture specific - possibly what makes it such a love-or-hate film.
PS. having said that, I'm aware that I voted for Wild Zero.
Resident-Seven - May 30, 2007 05:06 AM (GMT)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Finding Neverland
The Ring
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
X-Men 2
Also, Inquisitor, do you realise you put 2 that were already nominated?

Once, and once only people. Don't waste spots for films that are already on the list.
As to The Castle, it is there because it is quoted so many fucking times. :P
Then again, I can relate to the people in the film somewhat.

Thank you R7, I, Robot absolutely pwned. I felt for Sunny, he was awesome. "I think it's better not to die, don't you doctor?"
The Last Samurai was fucking brilliant, and I should order you all to commit seppuku, but I like everyone here too much. :P I thought Cruise played an excellent, strong, character. His acting was class. And I actually cried with the whole samurai charge on the machine-guns at the end, and when Cruise helps Watanabe to commit seppuku. :(
Or maybe I'm an undiagnosed Japanophile.

The "Taxi" you're thinking of is actually a remake of a French movie which is truly awesome. Trust Hollywood to screw it up.
Taxi Driver is the De Niro movie which is brilliant.
Here's a remake which doesn't suck!

- Laberinto del fauno, El (Pan's Labyrinth) I'm pretty sure this is within the rules. I listed the spainish name simply because the faun is not Pan.
- Waynes World. Not that I think it's brillantly made or anything but I find I watch it more often then any other movie and surely thats a sign of greatness.
- Bad Santa. Best Christmas movie ever.
- Clerks 2. It never should of been so good.
- Chasing Amy. The Chin's best movie.
