Title: Table Top RPGs
Description: What are you playing?

quartz_donkey - May 11, 2004 09:59 AM (GMT)
I am playing Warhammer Fantsy Role Play. I am a rouge character in the current carrer of Chalatan with previous carrers of Footpad, General Theif and Buglar.

The game is going well just went and killed a frankinstein moster created by a family of mutated nobles(cockuroche father, mad cat woman mother, four armed brother and finaly the sorrerous daughter). Darm nobles. It's a great game and there's no levels so no one is just leveling up for the sake of it. Combat is a real bitch too which makes it really cool no hack & slash here with out consqences. Its not D20 either so thats another good point I think.

I dunno if this counts, but sometimes when me and some mates are bored, I'll write a long, complex situation (eg. being held hostage in a giant prison) and stick my mates in it, with me being the narrator. There will be various objects, guards or whatever all over the place, and I never give them any straight rules. I let them go nuts with their imaginations.

As a result, we've had some incredibly creative stunts pulled in attempt to escape. But it's always cool to spring a surprise on them, like a guard behind them shoots one of them in the leg. Stuff like this provides more interesting problems and now they have an injured man.

I recommend it to everyone. A no rules role playing game of your own creation, just be sure to pick people who are creative and won't be cheap.

ATM, I'm crafting a Wheel of Time themed adventure for the Forgotten Realms world. Basically, putting a Faerun spin on the first book, with the players assuming roles similar to that of Rand, Perrin and Mat (though there are four of them :P ).

It is epic in scope, so I think our plan is to go hard at it during these upcoming uni holidays or the next, just work it around whomever has to work and girlfriend/family commitments. Should be great as we haven't played in almost a year, and I haven't DM'ed in about 4.

To my deep regret I'm not playing any table-top RPGs at the moment. A pity, because I do so love D&D and, er, that other one I played recently, the cyberpunk one... Shadowrun, is that what it's called? Anyway, I stopped playing when I moved away from all my D&D playing friends. And my life has never been complete since... *sob*

Well my friends and I are part way through an Orpheus chronicle, as well as abou 1/5 of the way through Giovanni Chronicles IV (Vampire: the Masquerade). However, that was the same state we were in 6 months ago. Also we are awaiting a long over-due Hunter story which is yet to eventuate. As for how I'm getting my Pen and Paper RPG fix, I'm an Asst ST on the White Wolf Online Chats and am busy plotting a Storyline there in between my many university essays and time spent here.

Edit: I should prolly post about my favourite character too. Balsamo_Giovanni. He is such a spiffy Nigrimancer of insane spooky doom. Besides the twinkerific powers he has he is also a very interesting character, having faked his own death, been on many voyages to the Underworld, follower of the Road of Bones, possessing of a legion of Zombie Love Slaves and scribes and is generally a most morbid but utterly fun character to RP.

The only happiest Cappadocian this side of Augustus Giovanni,

Pazuzu.

I haven't played a game of D&D in about a year or more. There was a point when I just played it every weekend, but real life got in the way. I miss it, but you know, I'm pretty happy now too.

I used to play a ranger elf chick, who I made up in like 10 minutes, but I ended up playing as for about 2 years haha... Good times, good times.

I play IRC on paper and whenever me and one of my mates want to, we do a little RPG. It's complete and utter nonsense and often gets George W. Bush dragged into it.

I'm currently in a Deadlands game, its one of the first Tabletop RPG's I've played and I'm not doing too badly so far, at least I don't think so. Our party arrived at a town being ravaged by zombies. We split into two parties, one party went to the outlying farms to pick up survivors and the other went to loot the local mad scientists laboratory. I was actually absent the first round so they had me joining as a roaming character. The party that went to the farms got tied up in the basement of a farm with some banditos. Then 30 odd zombies showed up and the banditos fled.

I play a Texas Ranger-Huckster who thinks he's better than everyone and everything, except the law :P. A huckster gambles with demons to gain magic hex's, basicalyl spells. I rode down to the farm and blasted the zombies with black lightning then galloped away so the others could escape. I almost died, but I managed to get the farmers and one of the other PC' out alive. 3 people went to the lab, two died and one survived. They were attached by insane psychic bishonen clones.

It's a lot of fun. Right now we have grouped all the townfolk into a wagon train and we are riding for the relative safety of the capital of whatever state we are in.

That's an excellent idea, Film Guru. I might just have to make use of it one day... :)

*me thinks about wandering into the warhammer shop in chadstone to do some role playing next time he's there*

*me decides that the people in there are even nerdier than himself and starts giggling, realising that it'd be stupid to go in there*

:P

quartz_donkey - May 14, 2004 12:50 AM (GMT)

Do it, it os good fun and you'll get to see REAL people in the flesh and thats cool. Although I guess that happens at LAN's too, hmmmmm arrrrr I know you'll get to talk to them instead of stuff like "you lame camper, etc etc"

quartz_donkey - May 20, 2004 09:29 AM (GMT)
Hey film guru perhaps you can do your "freestyle RPG"(decided to name it hope you don't mind) here in the forum more importantly in my dead thread. I think we could get enough people to do it well but there would have to be a limit.

That's a good idea... I'll be in that!

jawbreaker982 - May 20, 2004 10:23 AM (GMT)
Yeah, count me in if it ever gets off the ground...

...hint, hint, Guru!

:P

Film Guru - May 20, 2004 01:20 PM (GMT)
*lol* Wow, people seem to like this "Freestyle RPG" idea. :dance2:

So you guys reckon there should be a thread where a handful of people play through a completely freeform situation? It sounds great! Except there are a couple of problems. Firstly, only the few people taking part in the game should be able to post there, to keep it smooth. And secondly, the Narrator would have to post an answer after every action. While that works in real life, I'm not sure it would work well on a forum, as the RPG often lasts quite a while...

Don't get me wrong, it's awesome fun, but I'm not sure if it's practical on a message board.

Almighty Beanchild - May 20, 2004 05:17 PM (GMT)
You guys shuold all just get each others msn details. It's not hard and you can run your freeform rpg in there.

jawbreaker982 - May 21, 2004 12:56 AM (GMT)
Good suggestion Beany. If you're definately up for running a few people through Guru, maybe we should just pm you or msn details.

But first let us know what you think ;)

Film Guru - May 21, 2004 01:52 AM (GMT)
Sounds pretty cool. MSN RPG playing...that could work really well. :)

For now though, I'm pretty run off my feet with work, so I'll need a little while before I'll be able to whip up a game world for you to play through. I let you guys know when I've got a world ready. :)

quartz_donkey - May 21, 2004 06:52 AM (GMT)
That sounds good Film Guru and I'm sure no one will mind waiting. Gald someothers gave this a little more thought then I, if we ever do this a transcript might be interesting for those not playing.

I will update the status of my game on Monday(we play fortnightly) and I encourage others who are playing to update the status of there game too. I will also have my details up here too just in casse people are interested in the mechanics of the game(and just to brag) also anyone else who'd care too can do the same.

Well I'm not into table top much, therefore I don't know a heck of alot about them.

However, I am about to head down to the local hall for some Warhammer and LOTR. Should be fun.

Can someone give me some examples of other table tops apart from the usual warhammer etc. ?

quartz_donkey - May 22, 2004 01:27 AM (GMT)
There is friiging heaps like Shadowrun, Space Forntiers(crap name but hey). Then there is of course D&D which is good too. And I don't know they're heaps.

Note: There is a Warhammer Fantsy war game AND a Warhammer Fantsy RPG set in the world but are not nearly even close to being played the same way both are great.

Pazuzu - May 22, 2004 02:31 PM (GMT)
Not forgetting the other RPGs out there such as Vampire: the Masquerade, Adventure!, Gear Krieg, Heavy Gear, Mechwarrior/Battletech and so forth. If you are into Warhammer and LotR then Dungeons and Dragons (esp in the Greyhawk setting) should appeal to you, although if you are more into Warhammer 40,000 then Heavy Gear and Battletech would be good fun for sci-fi fun.

Assistant for the Road of Sin,

Pazuzu.
