Title: Gaming Showdown, Week 5:
Machiavelli - March 27, 2007 06:06 AM (GMT)
Snake Eater takes the crown this week. It surpassed its predecessors in many aspects, particularly depth of character. I couldn't believe how immersed I was in the story, so engaging and enthralling from start to finish. One of my very few criticisms of the game is the fact that I ended up completing it far too quickly.
/backslash - March 27, 2007 11:15 AM (GMT)
Where's the NES version? :P
Never really played any of the games but I enjoyed watching my friend play the PSone version of MGS, so I voted for that
borgster101 - March 27, 2007 11:19 AM (GMT)
Have only played MGS (Twin Snakes) and MGS2, and I enjoyed the first game more, the second one was just too weird :P
I'd like to play the third game someday ... :whistling:

Believe it or not you can actually get it for a mere $12 brand new
click here. However you'd need a modded PS2 like mine. I can't believe that, $12 for a decent PS2 game - why can't we get prices like that? :(
NismoR34 - March 27, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
Snake Eater for the win. As Mach alludes to, Snake Eater just wiped the previous two games to the floor. Okay, I haven't played Sons Of Liberty/Substance (whichever version) so I can't make such a call, but I have played the original (via Twin Snakes) and out of the two, I definitely prefer Snake Eater. It blew me away once I got into it and I couldn't put it down. Everything about it was awesome; the story, level design, characters (young Ocelot, anyone?), the bosses and even the soundtrack was fantastic.
Infact I enjoyed Snake Eater so much that it was my game of 2005, even beating the very awesome Resident Evil 4...
DZ - March 27, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
I have played the whole Snake series (not the NES versions) from MGS to SE and am a very big fan of the games. I voted for MG:S because its still in my fondest memories of early gaming years. The story was engrossing, the characters were very cool and sexy- Sniper Wolf, Meryl. The game was simple to control but not boring. The guards for me were the highlight, with their mannerisms and funny lines, and the "!" when they're alert still remains in MGS games and has become a trademark for the games, its funny. A true classic. Who will forget the underwear cheat? Or Mantis reading your mem card for other Konami data, and having to change the pad to Slot 2 to make it easier to beat him. MGS blew me away and is defintely in my top 10 best games of all time.
Snake Eater would come in 2nd, its a really good game, better than MGS for sure but MGS has the nostalgia factor still so yeah. The only thing that annoyed me in the game was the darn camera (which was fixed in Subsistence btw, a bit late for ppl like me who've already bought te game!! :() that was responsible for many deaths and unnecesary alerts. But other than that it still had the MGS touch with awesome characters like Ocelot and Boss, and a very intriguing storyline. The final fight ranks pretty high as one of the best boss battles in gaming history just for the daisies! :P Everything about this game is cool. The sound was like all the MGS games, very good, the music tempo when on alert mode really makes you panic! lol!
SOL/Substance is a good game, I don't see why so many ppl hated Raiden?? He was cool, a tad feminine sure, but he had the moves. Who can forget that crotch grab?? LOL!! I loved this game as much as the 2 others, the oil rig setting was a bit bland a nd boring after a while but the boss battles were always interesting and clever. The only thing wrong with this game was that you had to retrace your steps alot, you did this in MGS but atleast in MGS you weren't stuck in one setting, you had caves with wolves, snow, cliffs and hangars.
So yeah, I like all the MGS's but voted MG:S just bcos it was the game that started it all and also bcos I still have fond memories of playing it. Placing a C4 on a weeing guard? Only MGS!! :P
Oh yeah, the only gripe I have with the series is the looooooooooong cutscenes. They do add to the feel but I think Kojima should trim the a bit cos they get too long sometimes. lol! But that was sorta fixed with the option of controling the cam during scenes in SE. I like boobs. ;)

Damn that is so cheap :o
FreakTrigger - March 28, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
I think I actually enjoyed the first one the most... each of them have introduced new material and they're all fantastic games in their own right, but like most people, I'd never really seen anything to compare to the first one upon it's release.
The few titles that could be held alongside it were invariably far inferior, lacking that same sort of polish and ingenuity.
Also, good god that sniper babe was tough!
Qubert - March 28, 2007 02:57 AM (GMT)
If the original game on playstation had been billed as a fantasy/sci-fi twist, I might have been a little more impressed, but anyone calling this "Tactical Espionage Action" is lacking any action whatsoever along the brain stem. But I enjoyed Sons of liberty ALOT more though which is kinda weird, it is the greatest in the series. Gamplay, Story, Music, everything.
DZ - March 28, 2007 07:53 AM (GMT)
You are lacking something along the brain stem, sir! :P Its espionage action with simple tactics. Sure, the espionage is not on the same level as Splinter Cell but its not meant to be anyway cos Snake is daling with mechs and clonage whereas Sam deals with druglords and *snore* real politics. It wouldn't be espionage if Snake didn't have Stealth Camouflage and a silence pistol, and it wouldn't be tactical if it didn't have neat little tricks like cardboard boxes. ;) People that compare SC with MGS are idiots cos the games are not the same.
NismoR34 - March 28, 2007 04:49 PM (GMT)
Just wanted to say (because I forgot to say it in my previous post) that Sniper Wolf > You.
What a chick!
DZ - March 28, 2007 08:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah, her cleavage was shiny and tight. *erection*
lol!
Drake - March 29, 2007 03:38 AM (GMT)
Like DZ I just have way to many memories with the original, I liked both sequels but I played the original over and over whereas I only played 2 & 3 once through.
Stevorooni - March 29, 2007 06:19 AM (GMT)
I voted for MGS2 mainly because that's the only one I own (and never bothered to complete).
I've had a go og MGS1 when my brother had it on PSOne but I've never really been into the series

DZ - March 29, 2007 08:48 PM (GMT)
I find her sexier than those fake DOA babes. Wolf could take them out with on ricocheting bullet only.
Another thing about the MGS games is the art. I have a poster on my door of MGS with Snake toting the Socom with Meryl behind him, its beautifully drawn like water painting.
Angra - March 29, 2007 11:06 PM (GMT)
I want to marry Sniper Wolf. That woman kicks ass on so many levels. She can take you out and look beautiful while doing it.
I voted for MGS. Storyline was riveting. And by riveting I mean "kept me awake until 2 am and bothering Nags with plot update text messages riveting".
Decman - March 30, 2007 12:55 PM (GMT)
SoL gets my vote. Although I haven't played SE, I spent an entire summer playing the game to extinction, and the final battle. Wow. That was an ending. But the bizarre story was sometimes a little too bizarre...especially being told to 'turn off the console'. Yessss....
Nags - April 1, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
MGS2 had me glued to the game so that i beat it, then played it again on extreme with no alerts. The story had me, and the game play was fantastic. No other MG captured me as much as this one (Which is saying ALOT)

And I, in turn, want to marry you for wanting to marry Sniper Wolf.
Wait, what?
Seriously though, she's the best MGS chick so far and one of (if not the) best chicks to come from gaming. Sniper Wolf > everyone - simple as that.

So if you all got your way, would that be bigamy?
NismoR34 - April 6, 2007 07:12 AM (GMT)
^ Only if Angra agreed to marry me while she was married to Sniper Wolf. I'm sure that being the smart chick that she is, Angra would stay with Sniper Wolf and not marry me at all. ;)

I already am sworn to marry about fifteen people in my school, hop on board. The more the merrier! Wahey!
NismoR34 - April 7, 2007 07:03 PM (GMT)
^ Do you know how hard it is to resist coming back with a typical male comment, Angra? :P
Consider me on the list then.

Very. I had to resist doing one myself just there.
DZ - April 7, 2007 10:49 PM (GMT)
How the hell would a thread on MGS spawn discussion on 'bigamy'?? wtf!
Otacon is gay, imo. He'll be remembered for his pants wetting.
borgster101 - April 8, 2007 08:40 AM (GMT)
Sniper Wolf is just an emo with good cleavage :P
