Title: Would you like a coke?
Description: TX vs the rest of the world
Chancewithinadoubt - March 20, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
Okay. So here's the deal... I know most of ya'll aren't from the US. BUT This might be amusing anyway.. I'm from Texas...and it's funny abceuse ONLY in Texas and the surrounding startes can you have this conversation with just abut anyone::
"Hey, want a coke?"
"Sure!"
"Ok, we have Dr Pepper, Sprite, Root bear and coke, what kind you want?"
"Dr. Pepper!"
I don't know if that seems weird to yall or not, but what seems weird to me is wehn Notherners come by and refer to everything as 'Pop' or 'soda'
So out of curiosity... what does everyone else refer to it as??
borgster101 - March 21, 2007 06:35 AM (GMT)
In Australia we call it "soft drink". Which basically has the same meaning as "soda" or "pop".
Coke is simply that Coke, you know as in Coca Cola, the generic term would be Cola, which covers Coca Cola (Coke), Pepsi etc.
_MetalliX_ - March 21, 2007 06:48 AM (GMT)
Shazza-lay-me-down-fair-dinkum-strewth-Cola is the correct pronunciation in Australia.
...but seriously I just say Coke. I think vendors are obliged to determine what drink the consumer is after, as I think Coke has become synonymous with soft drink (Pop, Soda) rather than referring to Coca Cola. But places such as KFC who are a licensed Pepsi vendor will actually correct you if you ask for Coke, "Sorry but we only sell Pepsi," which is most likely to differentiate the product.
Random Hero - March 21, 2007 06:49 AM (GMT)
I call it fizzy drink. :)

Serious?
I mean, surely coke has bcecome a generic term for Cola, but all soft drinks?
Freaking weirdo. :P
Ali G - March 21, 2007 07:53 AM (GMT)

Well if they ask me what drink I want, I'll usually just say Coke, not because I want Coca-Cola, but just because I want a soft drink and am too lazy to see what they have.

It's cool drink fools!
And Dr. Pepper...ugh, I'm so glad that you can't find that anywhere anymore. Ugh!
Random Hero - March 21, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
I've asked a bartender for a coke before and hetried to sell me some cocaine. Fizzy drink from now on for me.

Calpis > all drinks.
Just don't say the name out loud.
Got hooked on the stuff in tokyo. God bless vending machines.
but yeah "soft drink" is the generic term down here. The more ocker of us call them "softies", but those who use that term often are a rare beast. "Coke" is specifically tied to the brand of Coca-cola.

Drake - March 22, 2007 09:15 AM (GMT)
It's close though, when it's potentially free i'm all over it in a second. The freebies made me want more.:P

Me too. :( I see it occasionally at weird shops in random markets, so I buy it straight away. Naturally when I go back to get some more they don't have it anymore.

What he hell? :/
Decman - April 5, 2007 09:49 AM (GMT)
Cool drinks!? Exactly Drake, what the hell? You sound like you've justbeen ejected out of the 70s. "Yo buddy, pass me a coooooool drink." N00bs. :D
Well, over here, if someone asks you if you want a drink, they'll either go through all the brands they have or just say. "well, I've got squash, juice or fizzy", and then you take it from there.
Hahaha, classic convo. :D:P

Being a "Northerner" people say coke and soda mainly, while i don't hear anyone call it pop. (I think people mainly don't say pop because it sounds childish) The use of the word coke and soda are synonymous here.
Also Dr. Pepper Respec, It has been my favorite type of soda since i was 5 and its funny seeing how much people love this drink now, considering it used to be rare to find it in a store up here, but now its plastered everywhere and you see celebrities drinking it and such.
Do you see a lot of Pibb down in Texas? Whenever i go south i see lot of Pibb
zsa-zsa tofu - April 13, 2007 05:25 AM (GMT)
o_O That's wierd. Where I live (Everyone here is a health nut.), we say "Don't drink that crap. It's loaded with calories. Have carrot juice." It cracks me up. There's like, a Trader Joe's every square inch here. xDDD
