Title: Gran Turismo 4
Description: Now playing on your local Ps2
NismoR34 - April 25, 2004 04:07 PM (GMT)
Well this thread was bound to happen. ;)
As you can probably figure, this thread is to discuss anything and everything about the Gran Turismo series. Whether it's discussion about the first two titles, discussion on the brilliant Gran Turismo 3, or discussion on the upcoming GT4, it can be done here. Heck, even Gran Turismo Concept and prologue can be discussed here. :)
Gamespot has some new screens of the upcoming Gran Turismo 4. These show new tracks, and also new graphical effects. :)
IGN also have 4 new movies of the game, which you can find...
here (movie 1)
here (movie 2)
here (movie 3)
here (movie 4)
I also want to add, that after a long time of playing through the game, I'm finally pretty much finished with Gran Turismo 3. I only have about 2 Endurance races to go, then I'm officially done. I'll post a pic to prove it too. After I finish the game, I'll play around with settings, and set some awesome times. Then no more GT-ing for me, until GT4. :)
Ghost Boy - April 26, 2004 01:00 AM (GMT)
Ahh, I'm such a big GT fan. Despite the fact I don't play nearly as many video games as I used to (what I would give to be a kid in Primary School again), I'm still amped for the next instalment. After all, it's about as close to driving some of these cars that I'll ever get!
When is GT4 due out here?
Nismo, what does your GT3 garage look like and what's your game time?
TrinityJayOne - April 26, 2004 01:37 AM (GMT)
That first movie is a restricted one or something, but the others are fine and currently downloading. :)
I'd love to beat you in a Gran Turismo 3 time trial, but as I moved out of home I don't have my bro's PS2 anymore or his copy of said title. :( But don't worry, I woulda beaten you. :P
EDIT: *watches movies*
HOLY SHIT ON A STICK!!! o_O!! That's looking fantastic to say the least! Good to see some more street circuit tracks, they were easily my favorites in GT3. My one and only quibble is the jump in the second movie. Getting air over a rise in the road is a great, but speedbumps on steroids like that one are just stupid. Can you imagine taking your shiny new Toyata GT-One over that thing at 250+!?
What I will praise Sony for is whatever they did to enhance the sensation of speed. The GT40 isn't the fastest thing in the world (just listen to those gear changes), but I'm sure you'd both agree that it looked like it was really flying in that first-person view.
I'm gonna hafta rethink my decision to buy a GCN before a PS2! :P
thebigm - April 26, 2004 01:51 AM (GMT)
I played a bit of GT3 over at my cousins' house and thought that it was pretty good, and I am anticipating GT4 although I don't have a PS2.

No strong release date has been set yet. I think it's slated for around 3rd Qtr this year, though we might have to expect it a little later than that.
NismoR34 - April 26, 2004 06:01 AM (GMT)
Gregg, I'm pretty sure GT4 is due out sometime in september/october, but that might change. Hopefully it's out before Christmas though.
As for my garage and stuff, I'll get back to ya on that, I still need to finish a few Endurance races...
Ha Trin, I would love to see ya try and beat me. :P
Seriously though, if you can manage to get a hold of the game or whatever, I'll have a small comp with ya, I'm up for it. :)
These videos rock hard, I have always loved street circuits, and always will. This Capri one looks brilliant.
I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on GT4, I'll be playing it non-stop. Then I'll get broadband, and I'll play it some more. ;)

Hmm, for GT4 I'd get a PS2 before a Cube. ;)
I'm eagerly waiting for GT4 Prologue. Sure it's just a big demo of the game, but racing some new cars in 5 new tracks is too good for me to pass up. Plus the making of DVD that comes with the game is worth the admission price too. :P
Buffoon - April 26, 2004 02:00 PM (GMT)
Ah, Gran Turismo... my most played PS2 game, with the possible exception of Frequency and Amplitude. I haven't finished it, I find some of those tougher races extremely, um, tough. I don't think I'll ever beat the Formula 1 series, I just don't have the skills.
Actually, I'd have to say in all honesty that I believe PGR2 on Xbox to be superior to GT3... and yet PGR2 has totally failed to keep me hooked in the way GT3 did. I hate to admit it, but I fear I'm just one of those simple-minded idiots who will keep playing anything if there's the hope of unlocking more cars/making more money.
As for my play time/garage status... let's see... *boots up GT3* I've raced 10,779.7 km, I own 94 cars with a total value of 42,800,520 credits, I've acquired 86 bonus cars and won 362 out of 456 races. I've got 87.9% game competion. I'm sure plenty of people can boast a lot better.
NismoR34 - April 26, 2004 04:21 PM (GMT)
That picture I promised will be a bit delayed unfortunately.
Mum will be taking our camera on her trip to QLD on wednesday, and tomorrow I don't have the time to finish this last race, so you lot will have to wait till she is back for the pic.
I'll give you my stats as soon as I'm finished though. :)
Hm, the F1 series, I really enjoyed finishing that series, after every race, I was just compelled to do the next one. It went by very quickly.
The only race I hated doing in the F1 series was the last race, on the Monaco track. 78 laps around this legendary street circuit. Why did it suck?
Cause I knew that you had to do pretty much the same race, as an Endurance event. :(
Lordage - April 27, 2004 06:34 AM (GMT)
I never really got into 'Gran Tourismo 3.' I was a huge fan of the 2nd game, and simply continued playing that rather than getting number 3.
As far as 'Gran Tourismo 4' goes, if anything is going to make me buy a Network Adaptor it is this. I really cant' wait, it looks amazing! Being a complete car nut makes it all the better. :)

I'm not much of a racing freak, but I do love the Gran Turismo games, especially the third instalment. I've kinda gone off it of late though, may or may not end up selling it soon, despite my love of it. The whole merit has just waned on me...
I need more varied games for my PS2 library. I've had it for nearly three years now and I've only got two games of my own! :(

Ha, I'm still managing to purchase games for both consoles, and I don't have a job. Niether do you though....
Machiavelli - April 28, 2004 03:14 AM (GMT)
This game is so much smoother than GT3, and GT4 is better looking than GT3 significantly, lighting, textures, reflections, refined car models, less jaggies, more realistic designing and photo realistic backdrops.
GT4 will be the most sophisticated, cohesive driving game ever no matter how you feel about the game. I just hope in future GTs they put in a cockpit veiw.
Comrade Natrak - April 28, 2004 03:45 AM (GMT)
Quite simply, I can't wait for Gran Turismo 4. And I'm incredibly glad that GT4: Prologue is going to be on Australian sures next month. (With a bonus DVD to boot ^_^ ) I'm going to make sure I snap up GT4: Prologue, it'll help to ease the wait for the full version.
EDIT: information on Prologue's arrival:
http://au.playstation.com/news/gt4prologue.jhtml
~DC - April 28, 2004 07:30 AM (GMT)
Thanks for that information Comrade Natrak.
It seems wise on Sony's part to publish that mini-version of Gran Turismo 4 in other countries aside from Japan as it will certaintly attract gamers interest and antcipation for the full version release shortly after. I'll be snapping up the Prologue and eventual full version upon release.
confusedonlooker - April 28, 2004 07:46 AM (GMT)
No car (except the F1's) could compare to my beast of an FTO LM in GT3. It flew! You were an FTO fan yourself weren't you Trinity?
TrinityJayOne - April 28, 2004 08:24 AM (GMT)
Aye! My FTO LM FLEW. It was literally untouchable. The only thing I could make go faster was that multi-colored Mazda thing, the Toyota GT-One, and one of the Indy cars, but they don't count. :P They might've been faster, but the FTO LM was still more fun to drive. :D I used to put the crappiest possible tyres on it and hoon around Special Stage R11 doing drifts. :P
Lordage - April 28, 2004 08:57 AM (GMT)
Heh, nice work Trin, although you could have done better than an FTO, I despise them. :P I had a fully worked `98 WRX Impreza Coupe in GT2 that went pretty damn hard.
TrinityJayOne - April 28, 2004 09:10 AM (GMT)
Was that the FR 22B? I had one of them tuned up a treat, one of those "perfect" setups where you could drive it hard and not lose control, yet you could still get the back out with ease should you feel the need.
God I need GT4, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! :(
Lordage - April 28, 2004 11:05 AM (GMT)
I feel your pain Trinity, I really do. :(
I can't wait to do up an Evo for the Rally Tracks. :P
Lordage - April 28, 2004 11:25 AM (GMT)
I know this is a tad ambitious due to copyright laws and licenses, but wouldn't it be great if in, say, GT5 they used the HD to impliment a Sound System Upgrade function into the game... What I mean is, make it possible to rip MP3's to your PS2/3 HDD then play them through your rides sound system, which would be upgradable in the game just as the engines... the better your system the better quality the MP3 is actually played in through this system. there would be nothing better than rocking up next to someone on the line of the 1/4 mile with your favorite tunes blaring out of your car at full volume. :P
Also, a show off area would be nice. Just and arena/car park where you can chat to your fellow GT fans online whilst showing off the latest addition to your sound system or engine and just fooling around in general (Burnouts, etc).
Sure, due to copyrights and the like it will probably never happen, but I can dream. :P
[Edit:] Sorry about the double post, I actually meant to edit the one above me. :P
[Edit:] Ohh, get this video, it's an
Impreza Rallying!

Hey, that's not bad. Good idea, but realistically you wouldn't add a full on sound system to your race car would you? ;) It's extra weight.
I do hope custom soundtrack is something GT5 has though. I get bored of the music in GT games.
And I think your ideas would fit perfectly in NFS:U2. :D
By the way, who's getting GT4 Prologue next month?

| By the way, who's getting GT4 Prologue next month? |
Well you already know the answer to this question, but I definately am.
Now that I only have one more race to do in GT3 (Monaco 78 laps...), I'll be looking for something else to fulfill my realistic racer needs. I've been keeping my eye on V8 Supercars 2, as that would be great, to play another racing game, where you have to brake for corners and etc., with different tracks to what I'm currently used to, because of playing through GT3. But I'm still unsure if V8's 2 is heading to the PS2, so I might not be able to get my hands on it. So that leaves pretty much nothing else to set my sights on, so either way, regardless if V8's 2 does, or does not come to the Ps2, I'll be getting GT4P. Plus, having 5 new tracks to learn and enjoy, is very enticing to me, especially after seeing videos of them being played...
Lordage - May 1, 2004 01:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah I shall be getting the Prolouge... Oh, also I picked up GT3 the other day to fill the time until GT4 is released. :P
I am sold GT2 ages ago and haven't had anything decent to play since then.
Oh and Nismo, look at Namco's R: Racing Evolution to fill your driving quota. It retails at EB for $88 and seems pretty decent. You can completely customise/tune cars and there are a number of different race styles such as Circuit, Rally and Drag, as well as Indy I believe (don't quote me on the last one). Well worth a look into. :) Although I have only seen it on the GCN I am 90% sure it's also avalible on the PS2.
[Edit:]
R: Racing Evolution
Comrade Natrak - May 1, 2004 01:44 AM (GMT)
R: Racing Evolution has gotten a real panning in the reviews I've read, just as a second opinion I probably wouldn't recommend it. Although it is probably worth a rent.
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/914...ing%20EvolutionGamerankings has it at a 69% ratio, not a terribly good sign. :(
It's ashame really, when the game first appeared it was looking like it'd be another game in the Ridge Racer series, however Namco have tried - and seemingly failed - to make a Racing Sim the likes of Gran Turismo rather than an Arcade Racer.
DJ-Civic - May 1, 2004 09:06 AM (GMT)
Yes, so far it seems R Racing is pretty average. You can definately find a better options. Heck, even GT Concept is bound to be better. :P

Heh, nice to hear Gregg, I got 'GT3,' along with 'FFX' and 'Amped 2' the other day, all together for $95 at EB. :)
Anyway, I started GT3 yesterday and, in my usual fasion, did the license tests in order. :P I started with my rally license (as I find that the easiest), then Went through all the others, except for special (as that's not really a requirment until the end). After I completed all the license tests I went out and purchased a white Toyota Tureno Sprinter GT APEX. After winning a few races it is now a 205HP Turbo Sprinter. :P It has a bit of get up in it. :) Anyway, I'm saving for my 2nd stage turbo at the moment.
Just a question, can I purchase Dirt Tires for the Tureno and take it rallying? Or is it like GT2 where only AWD Cars could be used in rallies?

Isn't it the "Trueno" not Tuerno? ;)
Sounds good so far though, Lordage.
And I believe that any car with dirt tyres can rally, so you're in luck. I might put some on my F1 car. I'd love it if it worked as it would make an awesome replay!
My current progress is... I'm almost done with the Pro League and still have 95% of the Endurance races to go. I hate endurance races. They're boring.

Ah, I have thought about this game before, but going by reviews, and what Natrak said, it doesn't sound like it will be that good. Oh, and as I've said countless times on MSN, don't bother finishing the game 100%, you know why too.
As for me, well I'm pretty much 100% finished, I'm currently on lap 54 of the last Endurance race I have to do. Which is the Monaco 78 lapper. So I'll be back with my statistics tomorrow. :)

Dude that's nothing, wait until you get the Shigeno version!! It's basically the same as what Takumi has in Initial D - carbon fibre hood, fog lamps, AE101 engine, etc.. I got mine up to 300-something BHP, drops cars with twice it's power! :D
CLL- *blink* @_@!!! *creams pants*
A few things that got my attention...
-The early model Toyota Celica. I spotted two different models- the old hatchback and the model that closely resembled the first Supra's.
-That purple RX-8, oh my!! *creams pants again*
-SPRINTER!!!! BOTH THE TRUENO AND THE LEVIN!!!! OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!
Lordage - May 2, 2004 12:09 PM (GMT)
Well my Trueno (Yes Trin, for some reason I made the same typo several times... :? ) is now 295BHP. :) Although I am now saving for an R34...
Speaking of which, I went into arcade mode today onto the forrest stage in 'Free Run' with the 'R34 V-Spec II.' I turned Drift on (asuming that lets your tires slide, which it seems to do) and made a drift video, which I forgot to save! I managed to have this car drift perfectly around almost every corner. the replay looked like an actual; add from TV with the perfect silver car driving through the forrest. :P Very cool.

Hey, awesome. This may seem like a dumb question, but how do you get your car to drift in corners in GT3?
I think I've also got a Trueno done up, but not sure how much bhp the sucker has...

! If you can't get a Sprinter to drift you're obviously doing
something wrong! :P The Sprinter is renowned for being frighteningly easy to drift, even a stock one. For starters, it has no LSD (limited-slip differential) which means that one wheel will spin freely of the other should it lose traction. If you know how, it's possible to drop a one-wheel burnout with the car completely stationary. :D It's also very light, and the small 14" wheels don't give much traction. Use this car for easy drifts!
To get a car to drift (this is for FR's and some 4WD's, on a fairly sharp turn, say 60* and up), approach the turn with a little less speed than you normally would, and wait a little longer to start turning. Turn full lock, wait for the weight to shift, then accelerate hard. If all goes according to plan, the rear wheels will lose grip and you should slide. Of course there's much more to drifting than that, but it's a start. ;) If you wanna learn how to drift right from the basics, do the wet rally races on Special Stage R5. Once you can drift there (not very hard :P), move onto Special Stage R11. You can drift on almost every single corner on that track! :D
Lordage - May 2, 2004 03:13 PM (GMT)
Yeah, see a GTR Skyline isn't fulltime AWD, infact the front wheels only run 50% of the time. :P Making them much easier to drift.
To drift you slow down to the speed you want to take it at, as well as drop to the gear you want, before the corner (but not too soon), then as you hit the corner, break hard and steer in, once the back end slips, point the front wheels forwards and follow the corner with them. Once you finish you should end up facing straight on the straight. If you are really pro you don't even need to steer in to initiate drift, you can just break with the movement/sloap of the road.
You can also change down as you turn (in the game at least) which makes it pretty easy too.
Also turn TCS and ASM off in the options menu. :P

| QUOTE (NismoR34 @ May 2 2004, 02:41 AM) | | QUOTE ("Gregg") | I got GT3 out again today after it having lived in my cupboard for too damn long. My skills have all but left, but the passion has completely returned.
I love this game and I'll keep you updated as to my progress. |
Heh, I wonder if me finishing this game gave you the incentive? :P Seriously though, good on you for playing the game! It is awesome, and I hope you enjoy it. Although, I don't advise you try and finish it like I did...
|
Heh, yeah all your talk to me the other night inspired me. B)
May I ask what crazy way you tried to finish the game?
|
No real crazy way of doing it really, I did all the licences first, then did most of the events in Beginner League, then moved on through the other leagues. I didn't do every event in order, so once I did most of the events/championships I wanted to, I went back and finished off the things I missed. Then I did Rally events, and then onto the Endurance events. (saved them for last, due to length)
That's basically it. Depending on how GT4 is set out, I'm thinking of changing my approach to the game.
Anyway, my details...
100% completed.
343 Wins, out of 419 races. 81% win ratio (not as good as what it could be..)
Licences Acquired: Special, and Rally licences.
Cars Owned: 103. (Mostly won cars, only a few were bought)
Total Mileage: 12978.9 Km
Total Car Value: $66,057,360.
Bonus Cars Acquired: 97 (see, what did I tell you?;))
Trophies Acquired: 432.
Other then 4 or so cars, you don't get anything for finishing the game. Which I thought sucked, especially considering the track selection that Polyphony used throughout the championships, sucked hard! How many times did I have to race on that damn Test Course...

Time to revive this thread with some new-ish information about GT4...
I just read this
extensive article on GT4 and all the information that's out there, and I found this to be quite intersting;
| QUOTE |
And then of course there is the speculation on the big exotic car names, the Porsches, Lamborghinis, and most desired of all, the Ferraris. These cars have previously been exlusive to EA, but that exclusive licence is reported to end this year and Kazunori himself said that he would consider postponing the release of GT4 by half a year if that meant he could put Ferrari in the game.
In a later interview, the more prominent presence of European Exotics was announced, adding more speculation. When recently Mr. Kazunori announced a special surprise for us at GT4, the only thing I could think of was Ferrari. No other aspect of the game has such a big question mark over it, and I really expect nothing less. |
And then there's this scanned image from a Japanese mag I found on the US PS2 forums; (pay close attention to the bottom left of the page)

Now to me it looks like that Ferrari is being either photographed for reference, or the engine sounds are being recorded. But i could be wrong... ;)
So what do you guys think are the chances Polyphony unveils the big one that Ferraris will indeed finally appear in a GT game? And for that matter, Porsches and Lamborghinis? That would be sweet. :D
