PSP Redesign Confirmed
3 years after it's launch, Sony have confirmed the PSP will be getting a makeover...During the PSP in Education event in the UK recently (where SCE tried to convince ppl that PSP can be used in classrooms-which is so unnecessary imo!) Ray Maguire has officially confirmed that Sony will be redesigning the PSP making it lighter and smaller without reducing the size of one of its key selling features, the screen. The screen already takes up much of the space on the portable so maybe size reduction won't really be significant compared to the weight reduction.
Sony is known for their console shrinking which not only reduced the weight and size of the PS1 and PS2 but the price also, so gamers are hoping the PSP will also be seeing a price drop.
LINKbackslash edit: Changed image to the smaller psp banner to avoid collision on portal

Can they make it as slick as the extremly cool looking DS Lite? I have my reservations. Exciting news though

I have the original PSP.
If this new version just has a cosmetic makeover then I don't care.
If it has an extra analogue nub, hard drive, longer battery life or touchscreen then Sony can eat my balls

Nope, none of that stevo, sorry. Its just a cosmetic makeover as Sony stated, no extra stuff. Its just like what the PSone/two were back in the days- better looking hardware.

As long as it doesn't make the current version unplayable in comparison ;) (Like that GBA SP did to the original GBA)

Yeah the GBS SP was a revamped GBA with backlighting, I don't think Sony will be adding anything, just removing instead. :P

I guess I will be waiting until this redesign is released then before I finally buy a PSP. There's some good games (finally) coming to the handheld so yeah, my interest in owning one is definitely increasing. Especially when you factor in that it will be connecting to the PS3 quite regularly (I assume) as well.

It's all about marketing. Think about it, if they say, here's the psp2. Some will say yay cool! Not much to talk about really. BUT if they play this confirm/deny game, it gets much more attention. Seeing how "good" PS3 sales are going, they need all the attention they can get.

Yes, but its a smart move on their part no? Sony have always released smaller/prettier versions of their consoles, its how you sell consoles. Plus the PSP might just drop in price so thats a good thing too. And if all this is bringing attention to Sony then good for them! Thats how business works.

The current PSP has a very sexy screen-to-bezel ratio, one of its few advantages over the DS. Who knows? Mabye they can make it better than the lite with a version 2?
dave_cool31 - March 24, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
man, I'd be mad if I'd just bought one, which I had considered for about a day mostly because it plays media and stuff but then I realised that there are only like five games on it that I like. Needless to say, I've just ordered a Creative Zen Vision M 60gb (mostly cos it was cheap from gamedude - $300) anyways back on topic, I will be kind of interested to see the redesign

Better than the Lite? Can anyone say 'battery life'? :P
Unless it's solar powered or something it's not going to be successful as Sony wants it to be. It's just a cash-in job on an already failing product. Sure there's PSone game homebrew, but this isn't really making any sales is it? There's only 5 titles that gather my attention and most of those were available on launch
dave_cool31 - March 25, 2007 04:53 AM (GMT)
I should mention that one of those five titles that I'd even play for it is a sequel to a previous game (Lumines 2) :P
