Title: Gaming Showdown, Week 1:

I wasn't especially impressed by Perfect Dark's additions over GoldenEye. Visually it appeared to make too much of a push on the N64's texture and framerate capabilities, therefore the gameplay suffered and wasn't quite as polished as GoldenEye. Basically, when I want to play an FPS on a console, clarity and simplicity are an advantage over a game that tries to cram in far too much customization. GoldenEye's concise multiplayer options really made multiplayer more functional overall, it just plays more quickly and smoothly in my experience.

Never got to play Perfect Dark actually, I saw one of my friends play it but that was as close as I got. But when I was watching it you could easily see that Perfect Dark was being pushed too hard for the N64's capabilities and the game seemed to be congested with things which proved hard to see what you were doing and where you were going. Had it been delayed and released on say the Gamecube instead, it would've been a much more accessible game.
Goldeneye beats Perfect Dark easily, both in single player and multiplayer - it also shows that decent movie-to-game licenses can be done, unfortunately we've yet to see another unique game such as this despite being 10 years in the future.

Perfect Dark was one of the few games I bought before I had the system to play it (the other being mario kart), and after a while without my N64 I bought another one solely to play this game. Yes, it is that good. *votes perfect dark*

I remember having more fun with Perfect Dark than GoldenEye because of the original story, characters and environments as well as the sci fi setting. The Area 51 level was cool :) , a bit disapointing in the end with the Skedar since shooting monster aliens in the last few levels wasnt as polished as the rest of the game.
On the multiplayer front Perfect Dark just had so much more options, and back then bots was pretty important in FPS console games, the N64 managed 8 bots and 4 players, which you didnt even get on many Xbox titles, pretty amazing, even if there was a bad framerate. Beyond the bots there was a lot to do in the multiplayer such as the Combat Missions that you could play with 4 players, certainly added life to the game and I have fond memories of tackling those missions with friends :D
And who can forget Mr. Blonde turning into the true Skedar form and the President running right in front of you when you're in a fire fight only to have himself be killed and you fail the mission
Whilst it did push the N64 too hard, it was still a fun game and for its time packed with features.

Obviously the game was flawed, with framerates and poor textures just being some of Perfect Dark's flaws. But, like Borgster above me I think the fact that Perfect Dark was an original game is what made it more enjoyable for myself. An awesome set of characters, weapons (Laptop Gun for the win), levels ('cept maybe the last few) and all of those multiplayer options. All of it just amounted to what was an awesome game for its time. It's main problem was that it was ahead of its time, but as a game in itself it was absolutely brilliant.
I won't hesitate to admit for a second that it is also my favourite game so far. Or my best game ever, if you will. This surprises people and indeed myself generally because well, back then I didn't have the option to play games online and I didn't have any (gaming) friends to play the game with either, so the majority of my time was spent in single player or against the bots. When you consider that I have spent well over 2000 hours in Perfect Dark, that's either me being obsessed to no end with it, or it being so damn addictive that I just couldn't put it down. Take your pick, but either way the game rocks my socks and that's why it is ahead of Goldeneye.
As for Goldeneye, that's also a fantastic game that I did enjoy, but I suppose my not really being a fan of Bond meant that it just wasn't as good as Perfect Dark was.

My vote goes to PD easily, I got so much more time and enjoyment out of it that I ever did with GE.

Bond FTW. one thing that I really liked about bond levels were that they were built for close-quarters. With the PD maps, a couple of my friends would routinely get lost because they didnt' play PD that frequently, and whined a lot about not being able to find anything. I guess I just prefer the smaller maps for multi-player, because you can get down to the business of killin' your friends right quick.

Perfect Dark wipes the floor with Goldeneye and considering how good GE is that's really saying something. Voice acting, a much superior soundtrack, an original story and characters, interesting futuristic weapons...Goldeneye just doesn't come close to Perfect Dark.
Add onto that a massive amount of multiplayer options and the ability to walk around Carrington Institute and you have my favourite game ever.
