Title: do you believe "anime" or "manga" is art?

Robert - February 27, 2007 01:19 AM (GMT)
Most artists say that anime and manga is not an art style, but I believe it is. I mean art is how one self expresses her/him self right. So why do some types of self expression be excluded from being concerned art?

I suppose anime and manga are not 'fine art'?...

FreakTrigger - February 27, 2007 02:58 AM (GMT)
Certainly not fine art - it also tends to be extremely derivative, which makes me balk a bit at it being referred to as self expression rather than visual regurgitation sometimes (Stop it with the fan art!)

Ultimately though, there's some magnificently talented artists artists getting around who utilize anime as a visual style, rather than as a source of work to recreate and in this context I am much more than happy to think of it as art.

Art is such a wanky word in the way people tend to use it as an accolade. There is good art and bad art... it is still art.

Yes anime is art.

Of course it's art. People tend to get all magical and junk about what art should be. Art is a means of communication to titillate the senses. It conveys ideas and thoughts no matter the media or means.

Anything can be art! Look at this!

It is certainly not fine art, but it is art in it's own form. It's artists may believe it to be though.

I could go splash paint on a canvas and call it art.

That's what some people anyways...

Robert - March 2, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
The only person that can do that is Jackson "Alcho" Pollack and you know it. He was the ultimate splasher.

Am I in trouble if I have no idea who that is?

Well I was just watching a report on the archibald(sp?) prize and hell would have to freeze over before they'd accept an anime type of portrait. Sure you have to paint from life but you could surely manipulate the painting into an anime style.

BrotherEstapol - March 5, 2007 11:51 AM (GMT)
Well if anyone can watch Akira, Howl's Moving Castle, or the like and seriously say that anime is not Art, then they must have something seriously wrong with them...

*accidently posted in the wrong thread*

Hell even Roger Ebert who is most anal in what constitutes art believes anime is art.

He has a massive hardon for Grave of the Fireflys by the way... and with good reason. Amazing piece of anime, if you have not seen it then fix that ommission in your life.

If videogames are going to be considered art, i feel its only fare that anime be accepted also.

I was going to make a post, but it was identical to this one.

Of course it is, just about anything can be art, and since art is based on a point of view, you can't really say that it is "fine" art, because that defenition would change from person to person.

Qubert - March 15, 2007 12:40 PM (GMT)
the term art is way to loose, you may as well say art = life which in my opinion does not.

I, if I am understanding right, completly agree here... Anime is art... But only as long as it is being used as art... NOT work. There is some that simply should not be viewed as art.. but alot of it is self expression... and isn't that the point of art??

shamenking101 - March 20, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
Being a big manga fan myself i believe that it is some sort of art "style" if you wish

like i think how styles work is how it's used or drawn

if manga/anime were'nt a style then it would be classified as other comics

even though the art is compleetely different

so yes manga is it's own art style

.44caliber - March 20, 2007 02:39 AM (GMT)
I agree. It's not fine art, and I don't find it cultural. Although people say it's Japanese or whatever...there are sooooo many people of different races who can do it just as well as those in Japan.
But I do think it's art. If it's done out of creativity, then it's art. =)
