Nurse, hand me the latest video game
SURGEONS who play video games do much better in simulated keyhole surgery operations than doctors who prefer more highbrow pursuits.
A US study found surgeons who said they had spent more than three hours a week playing video games made 37per cent fewer errors when measured on three difficult tests of keyhole surgery skills -- such as moving beans into a 1cm wide cup, using a standard grasper device operated with their non-dominant hand. The gamers were also faster and scored higher on the keyhole surgery skills tests overall than colleagues who'd never played video games.
In addition, the researchers asked all 33 surgeons participating in the study to play three different video games, and compared the results with the tests of keyhole surgery skills, also known as laparoscopy. Those whose gaming skills put them in the top one-third made nearly half as many mistakes as those in the bottom third.
The research, published in the Archives of Surgery journal, noted video games were more commonly blamed for a range of negative effects.
"The results of this study are highly significant and invite creative inclusion of video game play as an adjunct for skills training in laparoscopic surgery," wrote the authors, from the Beth Israel Medical Centre in New York.

My partner is studying med, so I think this is probably my ticket to a Wii.

For some reason quotes seem to f**k up the front page, so I had to remove them ..
But remember as a VIP you have the power to post these to the front page yourself ;)
Interesting article, I wonder if Trauma Center on Wii was one of the games the surgeons played? :P
