Title: Emulators recreate the games, not the experience

Drake - February 16, 2007 03:19 AM (GMT)
While it does allow me to play my games on my laptop wherever I want, I just can't fully get into them like I do on the real system.

You wait 2 minutes for your computer to boot, open a program and select a file from a dialog box to play. The picture is not in the original console resolution (256x224 on Nes/Snes), or there are funny filters that make everything have rounded edges.

Am I the only one who likes the feeling of putting in a cartridge, picking up an authentic controller and playing on a big tv like intended? And let's face it, you can't really have a collection of roms sitting on your shelf.

FreakTrigger - February 16, 2007 05:30 AM (GMT)
Amen.

I've got to second that, I've always found emulators to feel really soulless.

FreakyLime - February 16, 2007 05:43 AM (GMT)
The only ones I could get into were all the old games. The Nintendo 64 emulator doesn't suck me In because I'm lacking a computer game controller, and thus I have no analog stick. The genre "RPG" seriously sucks for emulators, as I just can't get into it and I feel it's a waste of time.

The GBA emulator is bad because games such as Pokemon where you level your pokemon up for hours, can't be transfered over to Diamond / Pearl when they come out.

borgster101 - February 16, 2007 11:04 AM (GMT)
Virtual Console on Wii is the best emulator, since the games are exactly the same as the originals, it's like having a NES/SNES/Megadrive connected to your TV :D

Ninja Catfish - February 16, 2007 11:27 AM (GMT)
Yep, borgster's got it there.
Virtual Console is the perfect emulation method.
I find that emulation is good sometimes, hell i went through and finished Kirby Superstar in co-op while sharing a keyboard with my brother (not the most comfortable gaming experience), and a few other games which I enjoyed.
But playing games on a TV, with a controller, it's just where it's at :)

Hell, even emulating with a PC controller (I have an adapter which allows me to use PSX controllers in a USB port) doesn't really help all that much, other than making it easier to play. Though I did finish Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day like this, which i wouldn't have been able to play otherwise.

FreakyLime - February 16, 2007 12:34 PM (GMT)
Not really. I'm pretty sure the N64 games aren't ports, just emulations, thus resulting in sometimes out of whack music. (Sort of like Ocarina of Time on the Gamecube [it was emulated, not ported].)

Ninja Catfish - February 16, 2007 02:29 PM (GMT)
I haven't noticed any VC games having anything out of whack. They all seem fairly perfect to me. but then again I've only got 4 VC games.

Nags - February 18, 2007 06:46 AM (GMT)
As long as im playing it on a console im ok, if i play it on a computer even with a controller i have to many other distractions to give the games the time they deserve.

FreakyLime - February 18, 2007 10:35 AM (GMT)
Yeah, i always open up MSN or another website :P

Robert - February 23, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
Games are just to rare these days, what other option is there?

FreakyLime - February 23, 2007 11:57 AM (GMT)
Spend the billions of dollars buying the old cartridges... Or Virtual Console. ^_^

Your always more dedicated to the game if you spend money.

Robert - February 27, 2007 01:21 AM (GMT)
Billions? Thousands actually and that's only for the rarest of the rare. Neo geo carts etc.

CARTERlikesPants - March 5, 2007 11:55 PM (GMT)
I ended up pestering friends who had NES's and SNES's in their closet to sell them to me, and they got ripped off.

eBay is about a hundred dollars more than what I paid. Ahaha.

.44caliber - March 20, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
I hate the controls on the computers. Theyre just not the same. It's kind of annoying to be honest XD But i still like them.

Qubert - March 20, 2007 03:47 AM (GMT)
Yeah, keyboards generally suck for any games really. :D

:P

DZ - March 20, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
Thats why gaming mags and physical game casing will never go. People need to "feel" the love thats comes in the pages/plastic wrapping. :P

Qubert - June 3, 2007 05:27 AM (GMT)
I used to be a big-time emulator, but now I don't at all, except sometimes to decide whether I want a more expensive game. It's just not the same, and half the enjoyment I get from gaming comes from actually owning the game (this makes it unlikely I will ever buy into something like XBLA, PSN, or VC, unless it's for a new game that won't get a physical release).

Fyuusii - July 12, 2007 01:37 PM (GMT)
I have quite a fondness for using my PSP as a portable emulator for older games; the smaller size of the screen versus a standard TV does well to contrast the pixel size. I'm one of those kinda gamers that can really get turned off graphically when I go back to playing old favorites (good example was Tomb Raider after I'd played the sequel; them some cones Lara's got).

It also saves me the trouble of fiddling with my LCD TV's antenna connection for RF switching and the like.

I'm still yet to try Virtual Console for my Wii. No wireless yet... :(

Qubert - July 13, 2007 10:03 AM (GMT)
For PSP... what emulators are actually worth trying out? I tried the N64 emulator.... total waste of time. I am using the GBA emulator seems amazing so far.

Fyuusii - July 13, 2007 01:13 PM (GMT)
I'm fond of the Master System emulator, simply because I'm not keen on fishing old carts out of my storage these days. :P

/backslash - July 13, 2007 01:28 PM (GMT)
I loved the GBA emulator, that's how I played the Pokemon games and you could save it mid-way through a gym battle, if you lose, quickly reload it and try a different tactic! Didn't catch the pokemon and wasted a pokeball? Reload it and try again!

Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG & Super International Cricket were pretty entertaining with a PC controller but it still doesn't have the same charm as a tube tv and cartridge. At least I could add my own custom music though, turn music off in the game options and open Winamp! Super International Cricket now sounds even better than ever with big name bands rather than "de de de do do de de"

sarunas007 - July 24, 2007 11:40 AM (GMT)
Well i dont really have the time to play these games on my computer, because im way too busy programing.

However i have tried a gameboy emulator as far as i remember, was pretty cool first few days, then it just got boring.

The only reason gameboy is fun because its hand held and therefor it became popular, whilst on the computer yo can play Much better games, and it doesnt seem fun. Chrono Trigger and Pokemon was the games i tried on it, and they seemed fun ( the first few days)

As mentioned above, backlash reloaded it, well i dont really like doing this, its like 'cheating' ;) , and i only like chalenging games so to cheat, would be a spoiler...

Asguarde - August 5, 2007 11:45 AM (GMT)
I have to agree, Drake. That's why I keep all of my old systems!
Can you believe some people actually sell them?

Robert - August 5, 2007 12:06 PM (GMT)
Do you think emulators will be more popular in the future meaning you can buy them online instead of getting the system?

Sounds very possible.

Xonic64 - April 21, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
In ZSNES you can add an NTSC filter which makes your computer act like a television and that adds greatly to the experience. You can also buy adapters to plug in your real SNES controller and make it work. Can you get closer to a real SNES experience than that?

But yeah, I get your point. There's something special about having a cart in your hand and putting it into the console. I miss those old days. Everything's CD now, and those break so easily.
