Title: The Official Nintendo DS Thread!
Description: *56K*, Everything DS related goes here.
BrotherEstapol - July 17, 2004 04:18 PM (GMT)
Just noticed that there wasn't a proper DS thread, and I wanted to post this new video from Cube Europe...so I made my own thread! ^_^
Anyway, this is a video of the DS DVD that Nintendo showed the press at E3:

DJ-Civic - July 18, 2004 02:08 PM (GMT)
I just got that. I'll return with impressions later... much later. ;)
Manny M - July 19, 2004 04:21 AM (GMT)
Well well, i've come away relatively impressed.
Now i'm not too fond of most of the ideas using the second screen as a mere map, but there were some demos that actually put it to good use, which was very interesting.
Don't like how the majority of those titles were modified ports..but there's hope for it yet :D
***EDIT***
Btw, I still HATE the design of it.

I don't hate it, but it does need an extreme make-over.
Not much new stuff in that video though. My E3 dvd has better demos of the videos. :cheese:

I'd like to know if the DS will come with backwards compatability like the GBA did - because if it does, I probably won't have to shell out $160 for a new SP since my old GBA went...missing.
I probably will get the SP anyway...

Zelda Four swords had been announced for the DS
Manny M - July 22, 2004 11:17 PM (GMT)
Fantastic, another port....
*rolls eyes*
And don't call me cha-chi, compadre!

It sounds like a total redesign tho.

The DS has become a bit of a grey area for me latley, I'm not sure how it's going to turn out or if I'm going to buy.
~DC - July 23, 2004 04:42 AM (GMT)
Sounds like the Ninty fanboys E3 honeymoon is well and truely over.
Definitely a good thing. :P
DJ-Civic - July 23, 2004 02:41 PM (GMT)
I think it'll all come down to the software the console ships with at launch.
On a related note, check this out:

Gamers in Japan may be charged for playing with others on the PSP or DS if a new bill passes through parliament next year. TOKYO--According to Kyodo News, the Ministry of Public Management, which governs the telecommunications field in Japan, is planning a new bill that will charge consumers a radio signal fee for operating devices that use wireless LAN. Previously radio signal fees were charged only to major companies with wireless communication licenses, such as broadcasting stations or mobile phone operators. The ministry explains that the new bill aims to "make things fair," since wireless LAN products and mobile phones use radio waves in a similar manner.
The new radio signal bill specifically targets homes and offices that operate PCs over a wireless LAN. However, if passed by the Japanese parliament, the law will mean that multiplayer on Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS will come with a cost, since both use wireless LAN for their connections.
The bill will not be proposed to parliament until next year, so consumers and electronic manufacturers in Japan will have plenty of time to organize oppostion to the Ministry of Public Management's proposal. |
source.All I can say is f**k off!
borgster101 - July 24, 2004 06:14 AM (GMT)
 If that happens it would hurt the appeal of DS, particularly the Wi-fi compatibility.
I'm interested in the DS no doubt and will likely buy it, I'm glad I didn’t rush into the SP now ;) since I can still play my GBA games on the DS :D !! The implementation of Touch Screen gameplay looks promising, such as the Sonic DS game where you make Sonic run by using the Touch Screen, the faster you glide your finger the faster Sonic moves :D could get tiring though.
MrRae - July 24, 2004 09:42 AM (GMT)
That video was nice, but I still just see the DS as a glorified n64 or something. (not that there's anything wrong with that :P) It's just the second screen seems a little superfluous at this stage.
Comrade Natrak - July 24, 2004 02:53 PM (GMT)
Damn right there's not anything wrong with that! :P
I mean a 64 in the palm of my hand is pretty good in my books.
Anyway, I'm not big on the gimmicks of the system as there's as much potential for games that are over-complicated due to the extra features at hand as much as there's potential for innovation.
I think Nintendo-developed titles for the DS will be great, as Nintendo really tailor-make their Hardware to suit the games they wish to produce for it, however 3rd party developers could potentially struggle with the oportunities at hand.
Comrade Natrak - July 28, 2004 09:26 AM (GMT)
*bump*
Nintendo of Japan have announced that the name 'Nintendo DS' will not be changed and have also revealed its revised design, which judging by these shots, looks much better. What once looked clunky looks a lot more sexy in my eyes.

Now THAT looks awesome! I guess Nintendo heard what people had to say at E3 about the design, and have definately delivered something better. :)
PSP-what now? :P
EDIT: I'm also glad Nintendo kept the DS name.

Much MUCH better.
Things are looking grim.........for my bank account.
CLL - July 29, 2004 03:36 AM (GMT)
It looks much better. I reckon they saw the PSP, and decided they needed to make the DS look a bit more sleek and serious. Hope they don't up the price though.
borgster101 - July 29, 2004 04:52 AM (GMT)
Excellent!! :D Much sexier design and I'm glad that the name wasnt changed as it was cool.
I actually found out about the DS not having a name change on CNBCs e program, as they had a report on Nintendo's stocks increasing due to strong Gamecube and Gameboy Advance sales, (looks like their figures at E3 where indeed truly growth) at the end of the report they mentioned the Nintendo DS as Nintendo's answer to the PSP, stating that it was the final name.

We're getting Foxtel again, so I'll be able to catch all these US reports. ;) Plus we'll have TechTV. :D w00t! :woot:

Only if you're getting Digital. ;)
Also, don't count on many of the shows being up-to-date, through May-June everything was fine and dandy, Tech TV was playing new shows everyday/week then suddenly everything became a repeat. X-Play is constantly on loop now with news that is now months old. :(

Tasmania stopped getting Tech TV as part of the Digital package a couple months ago (Damn am I pissed about it  ).

Yes, we're getting Digital. :P
Oh well, as long as we get the channel.
borgster101 - July 31, 2004 04:21 AM (GMT)
The closest I get to X-Play is via the TV guide  . I wouldnt mind seeing what its like, I think my grandparents have the TechTV Channel, since they wanted to get all the documentary stuff so I can always check it out that way :).

Nintendo Japan have released a list of some of the launch games for the DS:
| QUOTE ("Cube-Europe") |
Nintendo of Japan’s website was updated in the wee hours of the night with a huge list, of upcoming Nintendo DS titles and boy are there some biggies. Here are a few of the more interesting titles that will be headed to Nintendo’s dual-screened portable system in the future including some we knew about and some we didn’t:
Castlevania (Konami) Vandal Hearts (Konami) Boktai (Konami) Winning 11 (Konami) Goemon (aka Mystical Ninja) (Konami) Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) Survival Kids (Konami) Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (Square Enix) Seiken Denetsu (the Mana series) (Square Enix) Dragon Quest Monsters (Square Enix) Slime Morimori Dragon Quest (Square Enix) Monster Rancher (Tecmo) Tengai Makyo (Hudson) Rakugaki Kingdom (Taito) Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust-a-Move) (Taito) Kaido Battle (aka Tokyo Extreme Racer series) (Genki) Mr. Driller (Namco) Fushigi NO Dungeon (Chunsoft) Naruto (Tomy) Zoids (Tomy) Dragonball Z (Bandai) Sonic Dice (Sega) Harvest Moon DS (Marvelous) Legend of the River King (Marvelous) Currently unnamed, but confirmed:
New RPG (GameArts) New RPG (Namco) New RPG (Marvelous) Racing game (MTO) Sports game (Yukes) Action game (Epoch) Action game (D3) New Game (Team Ninja/Tecmo) Of particular note is that all of the Square Enix games are designated with the word “new” so don’t expect any of those titles to be ports. The unnamed games should be ones to watch. Particularly the RPG, as GameArts is the developer behind the acclaimed Lunar and Grandia series. MTO is best known for its excellent GT Advance racing games on the GBA. Yukes is behind a few well-known wrestling games. Expect Nintendo of America to make its official DS announcements soon.

Wow and that's just the 3rd party list. Can't wait too see Winning 11!!!
Gio - August 4, 2004 07:16 AM (GMT)
:D New Namco RPG? Could it be A sequel/prequel to Tales of Symphonia??
Now why exactly would I want a PSP
Comrade Natrak - August 4, 2004 09:58 AM (GMT)
Its slick design maybe? The analogue stick? The lovely big 16:9 screen? GT4? The possibilities for compatibility with other products through its Universal Media Disk or Memory Stick? USB? Wi-Fi? Adjustable brightness and contrast? The current gen quality graphics? The ability to watch crystal clear movies?
All sound like reasons you might want a PSP ;)
As for a Namco RPG, if it's a game related to say...Baten Kaitos...then I'm all but sold on the DS.

PSP features don't equal good games, just a funky gadget. :P
I think a lot of those announced games have great possibilities on the DS.
Comrade Natrak - August 4, 2004 11:32 PM (GMT)
Dual Screens don't equal good games, voice recognition doesn't equal good games, a touch screen doesn't equal good games. For every potential the DS has for good games there's just as much potential for games that'll wind up overcomplicated as developers grapple with the capabilities placed at their fingertips. It's simple to mention a few well-known names, but they don't mean they'll be good games.
Both systems are going to wind up with good games, and you'd be stupid to simply dismiss the PSP just because companies aren't announcing big name games.
(BTW, I'm hoping to purchase both systems ;) )
Pauly - August 5, 2004 01:10 AM (GMT)
Both systems have a huge chance of underdelivering. At the moment however, the DS seems, to most people, as the more promising system. This is mainly due to the innovative features and big titles announced. To me its mainly due to the whole dual screen thing. Sure there's a huge chance it doesnt pick up and that it fails, but it definitely intruigues me nonetheless. I won't dismiss the PSP just yet however. It has a great chance of suceeding, and even if it wasn't as good a system (which is determined by opinion) I'm sure the Sony name would pull a fair few sales.

Have there been any pics of the back yet because I'm yet to see any and I'm curious how they're gonna fit two cartridge slots in. One at the top and one at the bottom methinks.
