Title: Okami
Drake - February 12, 2007 01:52 AM (GMT)
Let the hype begin. Er, wait, the hype began a couple years ago. but it's finally coming out! Now just to finnish up Titans Quest and Dragons Quest before I start this one. This is probably my last big purchase for a while, so who's getting it?? :dance3:
Wicked scores ay? :D
borgster101 - February 12, 2007 02:06 AM (GMT)
Yeah can't argue with those reviews, it's going to be great. Too bad I dont have a PS2 ..... but anyway its a shame Clover Studios is no more, because what will become of great games like this? I dont think the game had a lot of commercial success in the US either ... so is there hope for future artistic games of this nature?
thebigm - February 12, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
You'll notice that a few of us have had Okami signatures, or still do. So we're definitely looking forward to it's release, which is 2 days away, however no PS2 for me ;(
markymark - February 12, 2007 02:49 AM (GMT)
Absolutely none whatsoever. But hopefully every so often down the track, big companies will take the chance on awesome developers and lose a bunch of money so a small minority of appreciative gamers can experience stuff like this.
Yeah, I'm super keen for this. And because I'm a lazy bastard, can someone tell me the Aussie release date? I bet you it's the twenty-bloody-second, or very close to... am i right? :D
edit: Disregard :D Thanks Mr m.

Did anybody remember what this game first looked like? Take away the art factor and you're left with this:

Looked like a pretty standard game before doesn't it?
One thing that really annoys me is how the game isn't in widescreen, a major loss for me there but it won't stop me from acquiring it
Unfortunately for Clover the sales haven't been that good despite the raving reviews. It's basically like what happened to Ubisoft's
'Beyond Good and Evil'. Just because it's a little different there's too many people thinking that it's automatically crap without even playing it
Qubert - February 12, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
Dunno wether to buy or not. Ok my situation is this: when i buy a game from a store right and its not up to standards like from the reviews ive read about them i take it back, thats proabbly why i have such a low number of games lol, anyways i loved zelda ocrarina of time on the 64 and the reviews of okami have been really good and it has made me want this game alot, the only thing is that ive brought alot of games and been dissapointed in alot of them.
will i most likely love okami if i liked zelda? this would be my final game for the ps2 aswell so feedback is apreciated :)

Enter the damn competition then! :P
Decman - February 12, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
I'd never even heard of the game until the competition started. Seems rather silly releasing an ultra-hyped game on a console that's nearly 7 years old...
I'd enter but I don't have a PS2 anymore: by the way, does the comp cater for those living outside of the Oz?
DJ-Civic - February 13, 2007 07:58 AM (GMT)
I don't think so but you can check in the comp thread. I believe we're giving out a PAL copy of the game.
I think I'll be getting this as its by the same VJ guys so the game has to be good. Plus I'm sure it'll be rare in the future, a la Ico.
borgster101 - February 13, 2007 09:45 AM (GMT)
The PAL/Aus copy will work for you Decman, Mach will have to confirm whether people outside of Australia can enter.
sunao-kun16 - February 13, 2007 02:34 PM (GMT)
Seriously now. I don't care if Okami is for an old platform but I hope it would come out for Wii. Wouldn't it be fun to use the paintbrush with the controler? ^.^
NismoR34 - February 13, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
While obviously Clover Studios are now no more, the rumours are still running rampant about a Wii port in the future. So with any luck, it will happen.
As for the game, well, it's my most anticipated game since Shadow of the Colossus, so I am looking forward to finally getting my hands on it this week. Course, it's out as I type this and I won't be able to get it until Thursday or Friday. <_<

Until they re-release it down the track with Shadow of the Okami :D
So there's talk of a Wii port, ey? That makes the decision a little harder. Defintely want the game, but would prefer it on the Wii.
borgster101 - February 13, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
The wii port is all rumour at the moment, it only came about because of the games supposed "fit” with the wiimote
BrotherEstapol - February 14, 2007 12:22 AM (GMT)
It would seem like a smart move on Capcoms behalf though...
DZ - February 14, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
It wasn't a smart move to close Clover so don't get your hopes too high wii-ers.

I'll look into it for you.
I'm fairly sure Capcom has kept all rights to Clover developed franchises. So if there is a possibility of an Okami port or sequel, it would be developed by Capcom itself.
NismoR34 - February 14, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it has a high chance of becoming a reality in the future due to Capcom owning the rights to it and having most of the Clover Studio developers within the company anyway, but unfortunately at this stage it remains as a rumour only. Seriously though, they'd be almost stupid not to port it over.
Anyway turns out I am (hopefully) getting this game later today (Thursday) so horray for that! :dance3:
ElPresidente - February 14, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
Played it for about three hours last night. Wow. What a game.
Absolutely drool worthy.
Oh Okami how I love thee.
markymark - February 14, 2007 11:02 PM (GMT)
Always seals the deal for me when you praise a game Mr President :D
I'll be picking it up at lunch. Hopefully it will break the hypnotic spell Burning Crusade has held me in.
DZ - February 15, 2007 02:36 AM (GMT)
2006 and 2007 were and will be the the best years in the PS2's life. Look at all the quality titles that have been rleased last year and now 2007 is bringing in more great games. Reminds me of the PS1's last days. Can't wait for the gems.
Robert - February 15, 2007 04:48 AM (GMT)
Its trippy how the PS2 is getting possibly one of there best top ten games ever in 2007. Crazy
DZ - February 15, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
If you already existed back in the PS1 days you wouldn't be saying that. Its normal to see this, devs have got used to the hardware and are spending less time figuring it out (like with the PS3 now) and more time innovating and creating awesome games.
NismoR34 - February 15, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
2004 and 2005 were also pretty damn big years for the PS2 though, DZ...
Anyway, unfortunately I wasn't able to get Okami today because in typical Canberra fashion, it was nowhere to be found. Granted I haven't checked every single store in the city, but I did check all my local ones and yeah they didn't have anything. So I've ordered it online now and as such, it will arrive next week.
ElPresidente - February 15, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
I feel your pain Nismo... so to ignore that pain I'll just point and laugh. :P

markymark - February 19, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
So is anyone actually playing it? i got my copy but haven't had a chance yet... what ridiculous circumstances I find myself in :D
ElPresidente - February 19, 2007 04:35 AM (GMT)
What the Hell is wrong with all you people?!
It has been out since last week, if you aren't already at least 10 hours in you need a kick in the head! :P

Yes, or need to steal someone's PS2 and Okami and return it in a few weeks...
*moves hands towards Prez's PS2 ;)*
DJ-Civic - February 19, 2007 04:04 PM (GMT)
Well I got my copy tonight and so far I'm enjoying it alot. I actually didn't follow the game's progress so I'm kinda really new to it all. I knew what it was about, how it played and things like that, but I hardly saw screenshots, videos or read any previews.
The game's intro was a drag though - 25mins long and nothing but reading stuff. Got a bit tired. ;) After that though I managed to get the brush skill and I was drawing and slashing things away. Very cool. Can't wait to explore some more and learn new skills.
I recommend the game.
Oh and it definately has a Zelda feel to it. (Not that it's a bad thing)
ElPresidente - February 19, 2007 08:54 PM (GMT)
I'm about 10-13 hours in and just finished what can only be referred to as the first chapter.
That's right... you do the big battle that you would assume would be the game's end and bang... you find out it is just the beginning.
I hope the game is as long as this is suggesting.
NismoR34 - February 20, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
Well in some good news, I finally have my copy of the game. It arrived earlier today.
However, I didn't actually get to play it this evening like originally planned. We had guests early in the evening so I fired up Saints Row first and played that, just incase I was going to be interrupted or whatever (don't want my 'first time' with Okami interrupted thank you!). So I do the Hitman activity in that and before I know it, it's far too late to begin the Okami adventure. Of course I could have skipped the internet routine in favour of it, but I hate doing that so I just came online anyway. It sucks, I'm a fool and so on, but hey at least I'll be playing it soon! (read: all fucking night tonight!)
ElPresidente - February 20, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
Waiting waiting waiting for someone to actually play this.
Still waiting. :P
markymark - February 20, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
Haha. One day Mr president, one day :D
NismoR34 - February 22, 2007 05:10 PM (GMT)
...
I still haven't played Okami...
...
...
...
...
...
Oh wait, yes I have! :P
Played it for the first time on Wednesday night and well initial impressions are that the game is so fucking gorgeous, that it's fucking gorgeous. Obviously you can already see the unique art style the game has from pictures or whatever, but when it's in motion... it's just something else. It's beautiful, that's for sure.
Art direction aside, the game has been pretty sweet so far too although that said, I'm not too far. Still in the first village. The Celestial brush is awesome to use though; I went into the game thinking that it would be weird to use but nope, it's quite easy to use and it's awesome. Drawing a sun in the sky for example, you'd never ever expect to do something like that in a game and yet you do in this one, and it feels cool! The game also seems to have an awesome sense of humour too, with some of Issun's comments being quite funny. I can only imagine what will be around the next corner with the game and well I just know this game is going to blow me away even more than it already has. Not watching any video footage of it has made the experience all the more enjoyable already, and yeah, Okami kicks my arse.
Yours too, because I said so. Anyway.
Robert - February 23, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
Watching my friend play it today, this game may change games into an art form rather than entertainment.
NismoR34 - February 23, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately I don't think games as an overall medium will ever be recognised as an art form, though certain aspects of it may be.
Before Okami we've already had some fine examples of fantastic art direction in games that could be (should be?) defining games as an art form, but because these games are so few and far between it's just too much of a subjective point to deem it possible.
Back to the actual game though, played some more of it tonight and well I am definitely hooked now. I wouldn't say I am obsessed yet, but it is pretty damn addictive to see the art direction in motion (not to mention the humour, hearing the soundtrack's awesome tunes and so on) and I can definitely see myself being immersed within the world of Okami (or should that be Nippon?) for quite some time.
Robert - March 2, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
Really it's all about whether or not developers are willing to take the time with the graphics, arty games surely take alot more time to create and are delayed etc, and lets face it...big business is all about getting it out asap...probably why it doesnt happen often.
IcElement - March 2, 2007 03:12 AM (GMT)
I heard that Okami is made all from japanese paintings or something and then was printed on to the computer to make it into the game. I love the game, even though I played it once at my friend's house. The graphic is amazing and I get to do a lot of killing XD, it's the 2nd best game I played on PS2, but the most awsome graphic I've seen on PS2.

I want to find the people who start rumours like this and slap them. :P
No... the game is just designed to LOOK like a Japanese watercolour. The game is all 3D, what is being proposed is impossible.
