Title: Franchise Showdown, Week 14:

I absolutely adore the way the Burnout series takes the standard racing gaming formula and chucks it out the window. There is nothing better than being rewarded for reckless driving and taking a few insane chances. To be fair, I've really enjoyed both Need for Speed and Ridge Racer at certain times, but Burnout consistently manages to enthrall me like no other garden variety racer.

Burnout for me too. I adore Ridge Racer but that's always been a hit and miss for me, sometimes it's great and sometimes it isn't. Plus besides the drifting, they haven't tried anything to improve it whereas Burnout has a collection of addictive mini-games. The NFS series went downhill after NFS3:Hot Pursuit

Burnout was great fun; Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer! was a bit meh, and NfS was the king back in the day, but now it's all about the ricing it's pretty average.

I thought you mis-spelt racing D43M0N  I agree to much of a focus on rice eaters but i really cant vote against n4s because i own and love them all. :D

Tough decision as the NFS series was one of the first games I ever played, however Burnout was a lot of fun from what I last played, and haven't had much of an opportunity in playing Ridge Racer sadly.

Tough call but in the end I went with NFS mainly because of its customisation of cars. Burnout's racing will always be better as its fast and in your face, but that's all you do. NFS has different race modes and has a bit more variety in the racing, but not all of it is good...

NFS is great for the cosmetics but the racing is apalling! Its worse than MC! The graphics are nice and all but the racing I found quite dull. I never enjoyed the racing in Ridge Racers except for the nostalgic music and cars. I voted Burnout bcos I thoroughly enjoyed B2's powersliding/drifting. FUN! All the other Burnouts are all good but miss the drifting.

And where's OutRun?? I loved the scenery in that game!

It would have to be Burnout for me, that has to be the most enjoyable racing game I have ever played. Its gameplay is unmatched.

Burnout for the win.

It has no competition, seriously. You have racing games and then you have Burnout, it's as simple as that.

The thing I like the most about Burnout though is that in a way, there's two 'versions' of it. You have Burnout 1 and 2 which was all about the intense action of avoiding oncoming traffic, sliding around those corners and trying to hold a Burnout (the boost) for as long as possible. While in Burnout 3 and Revenge, the racing was more about the crashing aspect of things which was introduced via Burnout 2. Taking down opponents was a fantastic addition and really changed the way we played Burnout, and it owns. Personally though I think I still prefer Burnout 2 as the best Burnout of all time, but I'm happy to play either 'versions' either way.

Ridge Racer as a franchise is also awesome but I think the inconsistancies that have been mentioned above bring it down a fair bit, unfortunately. Ridge Racer Type 4 is still the best game as far as I am concerned, although granted I haven't had the chance to play some of the later versions such as RR6 or the two PSP games.

Need for Speed is also a hard one, it has had some pathetic installments, some average ones and some fantastic ones. So it's inconsistant nature brings it down a bit, but then again titles like Most Wanted, Underground (the original) and Porsche Challenge bring it back up again.

I'm a fan of all three franchises (like that surprises anyone though) and will continue to be a fan of them if they continue to be as awesome as they have been, but for the purpose of this poll my vote easily goes to Burnout for the aforementioned reasons.

It's Burnout, it's Criterion and it owns. Simple as that.

Have to go with Burnout.

Each entry in the series has been a quality title.

It has offered a refreshing take on video game racing.

It is a lot of fun.

NFS and RR simply have too high a percentage of crap or average quality titles in their catalogues to compete with Burnout and of the entries that were good none had enough quality to single handedly make up for this lack of consistancy when put up against Burnout.

Tough call, regarding NFS and Burnout. I'll admit to playing the first RR on the PSX non-stop for the first six months of the PSX lifespan, but it simply doesn't have "it" for me when it comes to racing.

I was a fan of NFS on the 3DO, as it reminded me of ye olde Test Drive series on my C64 and Amiga. However, it has been rather hit and miss lately. I did like the customisation and drifting components of the underground series, but it still seemed lack in the all out racing area... I think mainly because it awkwardly hobbled that line between enthusiast sim and arcadey accessibility.

eventually, Burnout won out. No pretensions. No mucking around. it didn't pretend to be anything other than just flat out, aracde racing with a visceral element to appeal to the inner car-crashing sadist in me.

In short:

RR: Soul
NFS: Body
Burnout: Body and Soul.
