Title: Hello iPhone

thebigm - January 10, 2007 08:54 AM (GMT)
Well Apple announced this morning their intentions for the Apple iPhone, along with changing their name to simply Apple Inc. ... back to the sexy phone.

I was originally planning on getting a new phone and an iPod sometime soon. But this has just made my decision that little bit more complicated (for the sole reason that isn't possibly being released in Australia this year...)

So they changed their name from Apple to Apple Inc? That's so artsy...

New phone looks pretty nifty, I guess the whole touchscreen display prototype floating around the net a while back was actually the phone.

(For some reason almost every word in the post was mispelt and had to be retyped including this line, man I'm exhausted...)

It was actually Apple Computer Inc. (or something similar to the that).

All I can say is wow. :o

Very impressive indeed. Although I fear many people will look at it as an expensive phone. Really, you should try looking at it as a tricked out iPod Nano on steroids. Also, I'm surprised there is no issue with trademark rights. Cisco aquired Linksys who had trademarked iPhone last century, I suppose they worked out a deal.

borgster101 - January 10, 2007 10:29 AM (GMT)
It was only a matter of time really, a lot of people have iPods and even more people have mobile phones, put them together = WIN for Apple.

markymark - January 10, 2007 10:46 AM (GMT)
Want one, can't justify it though :D I hardly use my phone and seldom have an opportunity to whip out my oldskool G1 iPod. Looks supasweet though. Gotta love Apple :D

Andy - January 10, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
I vaguely remember some time ago they were discussing the iPod phone, but it had a keypad and did away with the iPod's trademark scrollwheel.

This however, looks a lot more "Apple" than the old one. However, this is an "iPhone" not a "phone with an iPod"

Very funky.

2.5G phone... urge to get iPhone fading.... faaayding...

Film Guru - January 11, 2007 12:11 AM (GMT)
I just saw the keynote.

Oh. My. Goodness. :woot:

Okay, as a piece of technology, this thing makes my face explode into candy and my brain melt into caramel. This thing does EVERYTHING! Folks who haven't seen the keynote really should, it's just... wow. The name iPhone is all wrong. It should be called the iAM-YOUR-NEW-GOD!!

But the biggest question is... who is going to provide the phone service here? How much will they charge for the whole package? Will it be fair, or even affordable? Not the devices fault, mind you, but I sure as hell hope they get it right down here.

I think PvP said it perfectly.

Might wait for them to cycle through a few versions before I even consider one.

Although I get on fine with my 1 gig creative mp3 player, my phone is almost 3 years old and I hardly ever use it, and if I really want to watch videos on the go I can use my psp.

BrotherEstapol - January 11, 2007 07:46 AM (GMT)
This'd be great for me if it had a capacity that was usfull to me(over 20gb) and if you could just dump music strait into music folder without having to use any sort of iTunes like program.

Price of the plan's will be very interesting to see...I can't see this taking off in the mainstream for a quite a few years due to large prices of the hardware and plans.
Kinda like how it took a while for the iPod to take off.

Robert - January 11, 2007 09:57 AM (GMT)
yeah, imagine what the plans will be. my prediction right now would be between $140-200 a month possibly more

bs imo.

Stupid technology. What ever happened to the good old days of a phone simply being a phone.

Pfft whats with ot not being 3G and it not running 3rd party apps. That said the interface and look are the sex but on bandwith and options it's 2nd rate.

3rd party apps... it runs Widgets and OSX!

3G may not be in the model, but you'd think by the time it does come to Australia next year they would release the model with updated features possibly suiting our region more.

Your point being...? :P

That's the problem with iPods; you can only use "their" freaking software with it unless you hack the damned things. <_<

See BrotherEstapol knows what I'm talking about. Options are an important feature in a $700 device. I want to be able to whatever I want with it otherwise it's simply not as sexay. Also think of what people could come up with. The stuff you could of seen would fucking awsome but alas it's never to be.

BrotherEstapol - January 13, 2007 05:16 AM (GMT)
I'm sure the thing'll be hacked soon enough, and when that time comes, that little device is gonna pwn.
Assuming they give it 3G that is...

I think you missed thebigm's point. It runs widgets and OSX. That means anyone can make software for it, just like widgets on Macs now. So it can run any third party sortware/hardware anyone makes for it. It's designed from the ground up so people will add their own customised programs to it.

EDIT: Aaaaand scene. *closes fist*

For those that looked at it and jumped with "OMG FUCKING GOD! IT IS THE SECOND COMING!"

Know there looks to be a number of issues that are not making people think it is as good as Apple told you it would.

Sorry that it was all from the same site, but I got a little lazy and just linked what they had.

Film Guru - January 18, 2007 06:47 AM (GMT)
While all interesting articles, they don't make the iPhone any less cooler. They're just trying to make waves, and failing. :P

1) Steve Jobs clearly stated it wasn't true widescreen, but very, very close. He even showed it in the keynote how you can zoom in and out to see the whole picture, or lose a cm or two either side. It's about screen size verses portability.

2) OpenMoko Smartphone can't do half of what the iPhone can and they were released too close together to be ripping off one another.

3) Speculation of prices. We've never seen a device like this before and a new kind of phone plan would be required for it. No way of knowing how much it will be, just gotta wait and see.

4) The fourth link is just ridiculous! They're disappointed because it doesn't have MORE?! This thing has more than any other phone or pocket sized-device known to man! Now they're just being picky bastards.

Sounds to me someone is just setting impossible God-like standards for this device. Later iterations will have more storage, be more affordable, and even more features. Hell, the first iPod was over $1,000, had jack all storage and only played music. That was it.

Folks need to chill and understand that this thing is freaking awesome, but it's a first generation. Well, it's the best damn "first generation" of a device ever, but still the first step of many.

EDIT: Yes, I'm an iPhone fanboy, but I'm still gonna wait and see what the second incarnation brings. :D
