Title: Frank Miller's 300
Drake - January 7, 2007 10:25 AM (GMT)
| QUOTE |
In 480 B.C., Spartan King Leonidas and his royal guard of 300 readied themselves for battle against the mightiest Persian army ever assembled. The Spartans were outnumbered one hundred thousand to one, but sometimes choosing where to fight makes all the difference in the world.
This early trailer is surprising complete, convincing and kick-ass. It also reveals some important story elements, for those who haven't read Frank Miller's oringinal graphic novel.
Zack Snyder, who directed the Dawn of the Dead remake, and is slated to handle the same duties on the Watchmen film (also based on a seminal comic) and Rainbow Six, based on the Tom Clancy action-espionage book, helms Frank Miller's 300 vision for the screen. 300 stars include Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Vincent Regan, Rodrigo Santoro and Dominic West. |
AMAZING TRAILER -

This looks crazy good, and brutal. Is it me, or is this filmed in a weird way? Weird as in good, it seems different
/backslash - January 7, 2007 10:35 AM (GMT)
It's filmed in a LOTR type of way but darker whilst trying to contain the style of Frank Miller's graphic novel. Looks alright but Sin City is still leagues ahead
_MetalliX_ - January 7, 2007 10:49 AM (GMT)
Looks insane, although I'm not a fan of the filming technique they use. (Live action on animated backgrounds)
They never blend together well and just come across too artsy.
But yeh, looks good, GO GREECE! :P

As if link to the youtube trailer... 720P for the f***ing win :P
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/hd/Can't wait to watch this movie, hopefully it will be one of the times I do end up going to Gold Class to watch (which I think are at $35 a ticket).

Um, it's meant to be artsy...it's based on a comic ffs. :P
This is the same Frank Miller who did Sin City btw, and the filming technique is the same as Sin City.(cept it's on actual film, instead of digital this time)

|
720P = 1280x720. Basically most modern monitors (i.e. from the last 10 years) can handle it with bars at the top / bottom.
As to whether people's computers can handle it, it depends, however there are resolutions sub 720P like 480P, 640x360, 480x270 and 320x180 that are still a lot better in quality then youtube.
Drake - January 7, 2007 01:58 PM (GMT)
cool, downloading the 720p one now. thanks for the information bigm.
Robert - March 14, 2007 03:44 AM (GMT)
Iranians outraged over hit movie ‘300’ I thought the preview looked rather...mediocre. <_<
Cubeoid - March 14, 2007 09:13 AM (GMT)
The 720p trailer killed my computer. Seriously, it was playing at about half the required FPS. So I watched the trailer in slo-mo instead so I could see it all properly. :P
Either way, from the two trailers I've seen this movie looks like it will kick arse.
_MetalliX_ - March 14, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
I can't wait for this movie! I want to watch it for so many reasons. One its partly an Australian production. Two its an Animal Logic film, which is the same group who made Happy Feet and Three its based on a historic Greek legend (well... spartan...).
/backslash - March 14, 2007 10:18 AM (GMT)
Here's 300 seconds of 300 on Youtube
Whilst it looks cool I can see myself getting bored at the same time and Metacritic's average of 53 isn't too promising either

It's not an Animal Logic film...they just did the 3d for it.
I mean, it was filmed in Canada...but if anything, it's Frank Miller's film. ;)

I mean its an Animal Logic film in the sense that they did the computer animation for it. I think its fantastic that they approached an Australian company for the graphics.
BrotherEstapol - March 15, 2007 08:19 AM (GMT)
Well Animal Logic are well known in the industry...they did work on the Fellowship of the Ring and the two matrix sequels. ;)
That said, I was surprised when I first heard about them doing Happy Feet.
D43M0N - March 15, 2007 08:52 AM (GMT)
It's going to be 2 hours of arse kicking. Seriously.
Going to be great.

I try to forget that they did the Matrix, they screwed it quite royally. From the first time I saw their scene, I always thought it looked pretty bad.

Legend? More like actual history. And it wasn't just the Spartans who stayed behind.
Qubert - March 15, 2007 12:33 PM (GMT)
It's all historical fantasy is it not?
DZ - March 15, 2007 10:09 PM (GMT)
This movie is gonna suck, from what I've seen there's too much screaming from that bearded asshole. And I hate the graphics, comics are not movies, cool experimentation but doesn't make it heaps better than Spiderman or other comic based movies.
Cubeoid - March 16, 2007 04:05 AM (GMT)
Couldn't disagree more. :P
New sig as well, just because I'm so excited.

I agree, whilst the animated backgrounds may look cool, why not just go to an actual location.
Qubert: The film itself is all historical fantasy, in that it sways from the original story to make it more dramatic for film. However it is based on a true event.
Random Hero - March 16, 2007 05:26 AM (GMT)
True Fact: In Sparta, it was ILLEGAL to NOT be a child molester. (300 related) Interesting article about iit here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartan_pederasty| QUOTE |
| The Spartans believed that the love of an older, accomplished aristocrat for an adolescent boy was essential to his formation as a free citizen. The education of the ruling class was thus founded on pederastic relationships, required of each citizen. The ephors fined any eligible man who did not love a boy, because, despite his own excellence, he failed to make a beloved “similar to himself. |
I haven't seen 300 yet, but does any of this make it into the movie (pederasty, boy-loving, etc.)

I haven't seen it, but I'd gather that we would have heard about it had it been in the film! :argh:

Setting the benchmark pretty low there aren't you?

Shadap you Spiderman-boycotting fool! :P Other comic book based films are as good too, like Superman and Batman and F4.

Chancewithinadoubt - March 20, 2007 02:45 AM (GMT)
I have to say.. I saw this last weekend... It is more than awesome!!! Everything about it is jsut absolutly amazing in my opinion... and I'm NOT a big fan of blood and gore films.. but I think it has alot of historical merit (including real quotes from history ^^)
Qubert - March 20, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
Exactly how gory is it? I've heard about people walking out half way through etc...
Chancewithinadoubt - March 20, 2007 03:43 AM (GMT)
Lol. It's not THaT bad... just.. you know..arms and heads getting ripped off... Arrows in people... Eyes gouged out... BUt it doens't really play on the gore...
OO! Something interesting. The spartans didn't actually know what 'adultry' was. They shared. Simple as that.. everyone was pretty much with everyone... and if one couple couldn't have children they used another man or woman...
See the movie you know what I'm refering too... that kind of bugged me though. The rest of it was awesome! And very well put together in my opinion.
thebigm - March 20, 2007 05:52 AM (GMT)
I'm in the city tomorrow night, but have my Game Development Lecture with someone from the industry, so won't be able to attend the screening :( Oh well, at least I'll go to Gold Class for it hopefully.
HaZal2d0uS - March 22, 2007 11:36 PM (GMT)
I saw this movie.
It was awesome.
The only thing that kind of saddened me was that you see all this blood flying all over the place, and yet the ground is squeaky clean with bodies... NO BLOOD!
kinda obvious to me.
*Don't take ur date unless they're into violence*
Ali G - March 23, 2007 05:04 AM (GMT)
Did you actually read the whole article?
| QUOTE (The Article) |
Though Plato in his Laws implies otherwise, blaming the Spartans for their custom of males taking sexual pleasure with other males "beyond nature", many ancient writers held that Spartan pederasty was chaste, though still erotic. Lycurgus decreed that if someone, being himself an honest man, admired a boy's soul and tried to make of him an ideal friend without reproach and to associate with him, he approved, and believed in the excellence of this kind of training. But if it was clear that the attraction lay in the boy's outward beauty, he banned the connection as an abomination; and thus he mandated that "boy lovers should keep their hands off boys just as parents do not lay hands on their own children." This system, implies Xenophon, produces the most modest, trustworthy and self-controlled men in all of Greece. Plutarch also describes the relationships as chaste, and states that it was as unthinkable for a lover to sexually consummate a relationship with his beloved as for a father to do so with his own son. In the same vein, Cicero asserted that, "The Lacedaemonians, while they permit all things except outrage (stuprum, = Greek hubris, referring here to anal intercourse) in the love of youths, certainly distinguish the forbidden by a thin wall of partition from the sanctioned, for they allow embraces and a common couch to lovers.' Aelian goes even farther, stating that if any couple succumbed to temptation and indulged in carnal relations, they would have to redeem the affront to the honor of Sparta by either going into exile or taking their own lives. |

Beautiful massacre.
It was a gorgeous movie and I loved almost all of it.

The movie was freaking spectacular. I allowed myself some time to recover from the initial hype, and I'm still pumped. I just loved it.
Ceris - March 26, 2007 10:06 PM (GMT)
I am sixteen and sadly can't go because my mom won't let me see the nudity *mad* O well, I here a lot of contraversy about who won. From what I've heard (history) Spartans all died, but a lot of people say Spartans won! Who won?

The 300 Spartans who went into battle - that is the ones who feature in the film - all died. However the rest of the Greek army won, in one way or another because basically... there still is a Greece. The actual Spartans themselves are also still around, my cousin being one of them. To put it into perspective with a rough analogy. Sparta is to Greece what NSW is to Australia - like I said, roughly.

In other news, plans for watching at Gold Class changed to IMAX :D
(Changed on Tuesday).
_MetalliX_ - March 29, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
I have seen it twice now, and will go see it on Tuesday again with imek (hopefully, may need to go to Uni, still have to find out). But I'm still in love with the film. I'm just going to go ahead and say it... its my favourite movie of all time!
Its simply brilliant. Not one thing wrong about it. The animated backgrounds, contrary to what I expected were real to life, and not an artistic exaggeration like in Sin City. The fight scenes, the bloodshed, the legacy, the passion, its all phenomenal.
Found a hilarious quote from RottenTomatoes:
| QUOTE |
| I feel comfortable enough in my masculinity to say that if I had to stand in the presence of these men for more than ten seconds, I'd spontaneously grow a pair of ovaries. |
Its frustrating to see it copping bad reviews because of its intense violence. This is from the day where wars were fought with blades and spears. Decapitation and blood was the way it was, get over it pansies!
