Title: Franchise Showdown, Week 4:
Machiavelli - November 19, 2006 10:05 AM (GMT)
For me the original Silent Hill is perhaps the most disturbing game to have ever been released. It feels like the low budget independent horror film to the big screen gloss of the Resident Evil games. While the Resident Evil titles are far more satisfying initially, their thrills and chills soon become predictable, therefore Silent Hill gets my vote this week.

Ouch! That's a hard question. I love both franchises but Silent Hill *just* reaches over the top providing a unique and unforgettable experience whereas Resident Evil is a straightforward zombie action game (until Resident Evil 4 came, the sequels/spinoffs before it were pretty bland)

I went with Resident Evil, essentially because I unfortantly haven't experienced Silent Hill.

The same for me, that and Resident Evil 4 is a great game.

Quoted for truth.
This has been the hardest showdown so far I think. Both franchises kick massive arse and both are brilliant in their own right, so yeah a really hard one for me. On one hand we have Resident Evil which is the game to go to for a polished product, one look at REmake, Zero or of course Resident Evil 4 and it isn't half obvious that Capcom know how to fulfill their intentions with each individual game and indeed the franchise as a whole. Resident Evil 4 blew everyone away and it's not hard to see why, but the rest of the games in the franchise have been kicking arse for years too.
Silent Hill on the other hand provides a different experience, a perhaps more daunting one and a more personal experience. Resident Evil does indeed have atmosphere, but not in the way that Silent Hill does. I think personally I enjoyed the Silent Hill titles more at the time of playing them, but Resident Evil is fucking fantastic too.
Meaning I'm going around in circles here. *thinks for a second*
Right, Silent Hill wins this one. I seem to really enjoy atmospheric games where you feel as if it is you in the daunting and wonderful world and for that alone Silent Hill wins. Resident Evil kicks your arse too though so don't forget that.

Resident evil 4 is just way too good to vote otherwise, and while i have not played silent hill 2 or 3 i hated the controls of the first one and did not play it for too long.
since ive played much more resident evil and enjoyed it more my vote goes to RE

How the hell is Resident Evil winning?!
The Silent Hill series is one of my favorites. I've yet to beat some of them, and I really haven't touched 4, but god. For HORROR, Silent Hill does it for me. Hell, just last night I was laying in bed peacefully thinking about Twilight Princess, and I thought about one part and thought, "That kind of reminded me of Silent Hill". Two seconds later I was under the covers hiding like a little girl. Resident Evil? Meh. It scares me a little but I'm scared of ANYTHING - ask Nags, I still get scared when I play Majora's Mask and OOT.
In my opinion, Silent Hill is a work of art. Resident Evil is just "eeee zombies" to me and it really doesn't do anything for me ((Nags has conditioned me with zombies by now, we'll be ready for the uprising)). RE has awful cameras, fidgety controls ((not like Silent Hill 1 was much better BUT))..and it's just thrills. Silent Hill forces you to think. It scares the hell out of me. My whole life I've been afraid of hospitals and doctors because when I was young, I saw one of my older cousins playing a level with the famous Nurses. I really can't walk into hospitals now.
I'm not saying that's a good thing ^^; I'm kind of rambling. But SH is a true work of art. It's just awesome.
EDIT: Nags you traitor!! D:

Silent hill is definatley more artistic, but in no way does it make you think more, by the way your stating this it seems like your saying that resident evil is a mindless game, while in fact it has a good set of puzzles and great action.
Resident evil games have one hell of a story, just because it isnt loaded with symbolism and metaphors doesnt mean its mindless.
and quite the contrary to your camera problems i though that RE had good camers for RE0 REmake, and especially RE4. RE4 had some of the best camera and controls in a game. period. While the tank controls of the others were annoying, they worked a hell of a lot better than the first silent hill, but i cant say anything about hill 2,3, or 4.
Resident evil is one of the scariest games ever made, i dont know about you, but when the dogs attacked me in the remake i nearly shit myself. No offense, but i thought that you had only played re4... that might be why you arnt scared to death by the series.
Yes silent hill is more artistic, but Resident evil is more a game.

I voted Silent Hill cos I haven't really played a RE game (except a bit of RE2 and RE4 on GCN). Something that annoys me though in th SH games is the voice acting, very under par. Other than that, its atmosphere is unforgettable as so is that eerie guitar music from SH1 on PS. Theres some creepy shit I won't forget from those games like the nurse, the bird that smashes the diner window in the start (SH1), the dogs.
The Room sucked though, worst SH ever. If I put them in order from fave to least fave it would be, SH1, SH3, SH2, SH4.

Resident Evil. Chainsaw wielding villagers scare the hell outta me.
_MetalliX_ - November 23, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
Having never played either game because they scare the shit out of me, I went with Resident Evil mainly because I thought it's movie remake was better... :P
