Title: The most expensive DVD boxset ever?
/backslash - November 15, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
I was browing through EzyDVD's online 'coming soon' section and discovered this
Prisoner - Cell Block H: The Complete DVD Collection, coming in at 179discs for a whopping
$1599.83! Only the most hardcore of hardcore would purchase this methinks
Complete Buffy Collection was the winner at 39 discs costing $259.83
Angra - November 15, 2006 06:12 PM (GMT)
WOW.
$1600 for a TV show?! No fucking way. That's so ridiculous, and the cost of the Buffy collection is bad too.
But I actually watched Buffy.

179 discs?? Thats when you realise that Blu-Ray does have its advantages, more storing space means less media discs = rduced cost.
Resident-Seven - November 16, 2006 07:16 AM (GMT)
Blu-Ray = Reduced costs? Ha! Have you seen the prices of them?
That, and the extra space on next-gen discs will be used up by the larger resolutions anyway.
If you count seperate seasons of a show together, the X-Filess is 55, Stargate is 53 (+ 6 when S10 hits). Both bigger than Buffy, though maybe not avalible as a single set. Star Trek TNG you can get altogether, which would also be more than 40 discs.
I can't see anyone bying this set though, $1600 for that show?

:nooo:
179 discs?!! Why not 180 :P

It wouldn't fit in there so they left it out :P
Wonder how long it goes for? At 692 episodes that'd be close to 700 hours! You'd have to view it for 8 hours a day, everyday just to complete it within 3 months!
I like how the picture shows just this huge long rectangle, it's something that's going to stand out no matter where you try to put it. I guess it'd make an excellent asian styled dining table for 20 guests
You know, when X-Files first came out in DVD boxsets, they were charging 7disc season boxsets for $200. There were something like 8 seasons in total so for anyone who bought them straight away they would've spent equal to $1600. Scary.
thebigm - November 16, 2006 11:34 AM (GMT)
Wow, that's a lot of TV show...
I seriously hope they don't put neighbours on DVD, that would just be even worse.
Inquisitor - November 16, 2006 01:42 PM (GMT)
Holy shit that's alot of discs.

Say what I say.
"Classic Australian Television."
Saying that, I really have to question the thinking behind this product. The show ran in the mid 70's-early 80's (and late at night if I can remember). That means that the youngest viewers would be about 35 or so (really going for the 50+ market). Now these group is known to have the money to spend on things like that, sadly they are either not interested enough to buy/use something like that (unless they are a die-hard fan/want an Australian icon, etc), or would use their money for something else (like buy houses on the Gold Coast).
Saying that, you will see crap like that come out more and more as the Baby Boomers age. Things that make them remember those times in which they were young and care-free wnough to waste their money and discover that they used rose glasses to view it.

R7, DVD quality is good enough for many people still, so the guys who published the boxset could keep the resolution (cos its good enough) and fit everything on several Blurays instead of one million DVD's.

A damn shame, it would have been nice to get the making of the making of the show special documentary ;)

If they did it would be so easy to discover the recycled storylines :P

I completely agree, 576p is good enough for most things. But I'm willing to bet that just about every HD-DVD/BR release will be 1080p.
/backslash: If the show was an hour long thing on tv, it would be around 470 hours, not 700.
When TNG first came out, they were about $260 a season.
_MetalliX_ - November 17, 2006 11:12 AM (GMT)
I went to buy McLeod's Daughter's for my mum which was $99, I thought that was a bit over the top considering that all the other boxsets were sub $80.

I guess so since it'd probably be equal to 45 minutes. But it could've been longer since there weren't many commercials back then. I'd say around 550. You can buy the boxset when it's released, then tell me :P

Those are Aussie prices as well, so that's actually bout $1200USD and $200USD respectively.
There's also that Charmed book of shadows set, that's like $300 and it's not evern all the seasons!
Drake - November 20, 2006 03:42 AM (GMT)
what about the original region 4 complete james bond series thats like $400
BrotherEstapol - November 20, 2006 10:35 AM (GMT)
You've gotta look at these things in the right perspective...using Bond as an example, there's 20 flims, 2 discs a film, that's $20 for each two disc film.
Anyway, that set is more like $280, which makes each film $14 each, which is really great value if you look at it that way.
Nothing wrong with buying bulk. B-)
Squato - November 20, 2006 06:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah, and then they came out with that version in the case a month or so back.
adam_91vn - November 21, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
So Charmed today for 297 bucks
