Title: Everyone's A Bit Racist,
Description: Just a tad.
Drake - November 9, 2006 04:56 AM (GMT)
think about it. we might not care about the colour of someones skin but we might in our subconscious mind. im sure that some people can find more flaws in opinion about a certain race than the other, even if we don't admit it to ourselves. we probably won't act on our subconscious opinions but everyone is still a bit racist.
so don't you think it's silly when someone calls another person racist? if not take this quiz....
take the stereotype of every race.
now, if you were to be stuck on an island with two people, each from a different race who would you choose and why? why not the others?
dont be afraid to post your real opinion, because no one will bash you for it. this topic asks for the hard truth and that's what you should give it.

Meh, I don't know. I hate the pommy accent, it's just so damn annoying. But at the same time, I like other English accents, like Patrick Stuart or that Chick from Lost.

There are two things I cant stand, people who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.
The one race, where despite my multicultural belief I still hold a disliking to them based solely on their stereotypes would have to be Aboriginals. The main reason is due to the fact that they live up to their stereotype. I remember when I was doing work experience at Redfern I never felt safe walking to and from the station, the bins out the front of their homes would be full with empty beer bottles, most houses had a person sitting outside it rudely demanding spare change, two young Aboriginals girls pressed the emergency stop button on the enormous excalators at the station so an elderly frail woman was forced to walk all the way up, graffiti and rubbish everywhere. It was horrible, lucky my work experience was over as a week later the riots happened, had I still been working there I would've been smack bang in the middle of it.

I CANNOT STAND muslims and aboriginals. I'm sorry but I just plain don't like them. Aboriginals as Metallix already stated, live up to their reputation of crime, insults, fights and out of control alcoholics. The only 2 I can think of who's alright is Ernie Dingo (sp?) and Cathy Freeman, all the other aboriginals hanging at my workplace are a bad influence.
Muslims I can't stand either, I know they have their rules but they could at least say "Hi" when I greet them as they're coming through the register. They never talk and no matter how hard I try I can barely get a word out of them. It's like talking to a brick wall. Why on earth come to Australia if you're not going to talk?! I don't even know how they get jobs. What's a job that doesn't involve talking? Garbage collectors? I have no idea but for god's sake, if you're going to live here at least try to adapt to our lifestyle or go back to whatever country you come from.
Sorry for my ranting
If I was stuck on an island with 2 races I'd pick kiwis and english (England). At least I could understand them :P I used to think chinese & japanese people were pretty polite but the ones I serve at work are rude beyond my belief. Perhaps I need to visit these countries first rather than using my knowledge from what I've seen in anime

Damn, I completely disagree with this. So hold on, just because a few customers who happened to be Muslim didn’t talk to you when you served them, this is a sufficient reason to stereotype all Muslims? That's a bit short-sighted mate. And another thing, “Muslim” is not a race it's a religion :P
I really don't like it when people stereotype a race or religion based on their own personal experiences, when in reality this represents a very small proportion of the race/religion as a whole, and personally I cant see customers who don’t talk being a really bad experience to not stand the people, it's better than those people that complain about everything right?
I'm not having a go at you, I just really dislike stereotypes against race, especially when it's (as it always is) based on some personal experience that isn't a true reflection of what the entire race would represent. I have several friends who happen to be Muslim and they are just as "Australian" as anyone, it's unfair to say people should go back to "their own country" because they aren't adapting to the Australian lifestyle, what exactly is the Australian lifestyle? I'm willing to bet that it would be something different to everyone.
Same sort of deal with Aboriginals, yes there are many that live up to the stereotype, of course someone has to because the stereotype comes from somewhere, doesn't mean they are all like that.
In my opinion, hate the person, not the race. So regarding the title, "everyone's a bit racist", I disagree wholeheartedly, perhaps some people think that way from their own personal experiences but I certainly don’t.
So in short a lot of people base their opinion on an entire race (and posts this thread show this) on some personal experience they have had with some person or people of said race, but simple statistics would tell you that this experience is representative of less than 1% of the entire race and therefore is not an indicator of how the entire race behaves or acts. I'm sure there are people that we don’t like who have the same racial origins as our own, just because that person is a d!ck doesn't mean we are as well. Just something to think about ;)

http://www.implicit.harvard.edu/Even if you don't think you have racist tendencies, you generally do. Check out the website and you'll find out. I have a moderate preference for white people over black people.

A few? I've served over a couple of hundred actually and they're all exactly the same. And I know Muslim is a religion but you know, they're kinda similar :P When you've also had bad experiences with Aboriginals it's really hard to accept them as a whole when quite a few cause so much damage to Australia's image. Everytime I read the paper there's always some reported crime where aboriginals have done something. They just aren't brought up very well. I guess the same goes for people like us, but you get what I mean right?
As for the australian lifestyle, I just mean at least talk once in a while. Not neccessarily dress like us but at least be a bit more social

Dude, I'm sure there are just as many white non-Muslims who don't talk as there are Muslims.

I don't hate a whole race just cos I had/have bad experiences with certain people of that race. Indians are annoyingly imposing imo (looks at Maths lecturer), but I know some that are funny and that have a lot in common with me. I try to work out why they act the way they do, its cultural difference that makes it seem they are racist or maybe an 'inferior' race. I realise that and look for the things I like in them.
I'm not racist, I'm half-cast, I don't mind being on an island with anyone! Every race has their qualities, bad and good.

SILENCE AUSTRALIAN! OR FACE IMPERIAL RULE! AGAIN! <_<
Just kidding mate.
What exactly is a 'pommy' accent? There are tons of accents in the UK. Some of them are crap, some of them are teh sex IMO.
I'm not really that racist. Maybe sometimes I will be jokingly, but you know, every race, every country, every city etc. has its bad apples, and nobody should make sweeping statements. I've met a crap-load of Irish, American, Australian, English, Muslim, Russian, African (and so on) peeps who were absolute bastards, but I've also meant absolutely awesome people of the same creed. There's bad in all of us, and it only takes one person to give you a bad impression of an entire race.
But I know, there is a line that people shouldn't cross. Like borg has said, if you're a foreigner and you move to a foreign country, you should act and behave like the natives. It's plain and simple. That's how you'll make friends.

A few or a hundred you've only served them at work, can't really form a fair opinion of them as people from that.
I know what you mean though, but in my opinion it's unfortante that because of lets say a few bad apples or a few hundered bad apples whatever :P , that we're going to say that all apples are bad. Regarding Muslim people not talking, you may have served someone who was Muslim who talked to you and was very friendly, but you probably didnt even know they were Muslim, my friends who are Muslim "dress" just like everyone else for instance, so that's really an individual choice to each person.
Like Decman I myself have met many people from various countries, some are complete arse holes and others aren't, it's just the way it is. Despite how Aborginals are portrayed in the media and whatnot I'm sure there are many of them that dont have a life of crime, why aren't these people on the news? It's the news, who wants to read/watch about good things! No one apparantly.

But considering so many people from different areas have had the same bad experiences, it would suggest that it's not just a few people. I never met an aboriginal that didn't have an attitude problem.
As for the "pommy" accent, it's hard to say, but you know those girly annoying ones? Like on that 1800 revese ad with the tattoo, and from the show The Bill. I can't watch most british shows for that particular reason. :)

You can, on either SBS or Aunty (best to watch shows like Message Stock).
Anyway, for the joke nod here.
