Title: Franchise Showdown, Week 3:

..And God said, "Let there be FPS games!"

Although I absolutely adore Doom, the First Person Shooter genre pretty much came together with the advent of Wolfenstein 3D and for that it gets my vote.

thebigm - November 8, 2006 07:56 AM (GMT)
Has to be the game that started it all for me :)

(Wolfenstein).

_MetalliX_ - November 8, 2006 08:50 AM (GMT)
Wolfenstein? Are you all crazy? Doom was the game which defined the first person shooter!! Heck, you could even play a level of Wolfenstein in Doom!

Shocked. Shocked and appauled.

Nostalgia :P

Plus I don't think I've actually played much of Doom...

I voted Doom since its the only game I've played of the two. *sigh* I always remember those damn fireballs in my face. LOL! Good stuff.

And while we're discussing history, here's some Wiki info... Doom, FPS's (looks like the first "3D" FPS was called Maze War... :P), W3D.

Doom for me, I discovered Wolfenstein 3D AFTER I played Doom which kinda ruined the whole experience for me. Still love Wolfenstein though (the original, didn't really like the next-gen graphic sequel, same goes for Doom 3)

borgster101 - November 8, 2006 11:12 AM (GMT)
I voted Wolfenstein 3D only because it was a game I owned on my old PC and I still remember that final boss fight today :D

It was?

Umm yeah, that Wolfenstein game was cool :whistling:

I used to play Doom 1 and 2 a lot when I was younger. The double barrel shotgun has to be the single coolest weapon in the history of video game weapons. Wolfenstein was alright but it was just never as fun as Doom was for me.

Also I don't mind Doom 3. Sure it's linear but damn it's atmospheric and fun.

Wolfenstein was an excellent game, and seemed to have more backing it than run and gun DOOM, even though i usually go sci-fi i felt that wolfenstein is truly much better than doom since it had a semi story.

I still haven't finished Doom 3 yet, and I don't think I will... it seriously freaked me out, especially the Cherubs. (baby monster thing)

I finished it. I love the game, the plot sucked and its a little on the short side for my liking but as Cubeoid pointed out, the sounds and whole atmosphere of the game makes for chilling experience. The frights are very memorable. And yes, those fucken cherubs are feaky shit! Hell is scary too.
The end boss was easier than I thought really. I just ran around the crater with the BFG and brought him down on the first go. Its a scary game though, very.

doom had my vote until I seen that mechanical hitler.

ElPresidente - November 9, 2006 05:47 AM (GMT)
That the two games are running even stevens (or prior to my vote Wolf3D was winning) makes me sick. Y'all should be ashamed. :P

auhsor - November 9, 2006 10:28 AM (GMT)
Wolfenstein was probably the first FPS I played. I have many memories of playing it. I remember having doom, but I don't think I ever played it much.
That said, I can actually play Doom on my MP3 player using the open source firmware, Rockbox. The controls are a bit hard, but it's possible, and pretty cool.

NismoR34 - November 9, 2006 05:45 PM (GMT)
Wolfenstein may have started it all but DOOM made the genre what it is today. Well in my opinion anyway. Even if it wasn't a genre-defining game, DOOM had it all. Fantastic gameplay, guns that kicked your arse, enemies that were fantastic (and challenging in parts) and an awesome soundtrack to boot. DOOM II was also bloody fantastic and yeah, DOOM as a whole is just more polished than Wolfenstein and just better. Going back to the soundtrack for just a moment, take a look at the Dark Side of Phobos OC Remix album if you haven't already. Some brilliant remixes of the DOOM soundtrack in that.

As for DOOM 3, I am still yet to finish it as well and I don't think I will. It was a reasonably good game up to the point I stopped playing it, but yeah meh.
